Introduction
Thank you for selectin the Extech EX210/EX210T True RMS (EX210T only) Autoran in Multimeter.
This meter measures AC/DC Volta e, AC/DC Current, Resistance, Diode Test, and Continuity plus
non-contact InfraRed Temperature. Proper use and care of this meter will provide many years of
reliable service. Please visit the Extech Instruments website (www.extech.com) to check for the latest
version of this User Guide. Extech Instruments is an ISO-9001 certified company.
Safety
This symbol adjacent to another symbol, terminal or operatin device indicates
that the operator must refer to an explanation in the Operatin Instructions to
avoid personal injury or dama e to the meter.
This WARNING symbol indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which if not
avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
This CAUTION symbol indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which if not
avoided, may result dama e to the product.
This symbol advises the user that the terminal(s) so marked must not be
connected to a circuit point at which the volta e with respect to earth round
exceeds (in this case) 600 VAC or VDC.
This symbol adjacent to one or more terminals identifies them as bein associated
with ran es that may, in normal use, be subjected to particularly hazardous
volta es. For maximum safety, the meter and its test leads should not be handled

PER IEC1010 OVERVOLTAGE INSTALLATION CATEGORY
OVERVOLTAGE CATEGORY I
Equipment of OVERVOLTAGE CATEGORY I is equipment for connection to circuits in which
measures are taken to limit the transient overvolta es to an appropriate low level.
Note – Examples include protected electronic circuits.
OVERVOLTAGE CATEGORY II
Equipment of OVERVOLTAGE CATEGORY II is ener y-consumin equipment to be supplied from
the fixed installation.
Note – Examples include household, office, and laboratory appliances.
OVERVOLTAGE CATEGORY III

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
This meter has been designed for safe se, b t m st be operated with ca tion. The r les listed below
m st be caref lly followed for safe operation.
1. NEVER apply voltage or c rrent to the meter that exceeds the specified maxim m:

2. USE EXTREME CAUTION when working with high voltages.

4. NEVER connect the meter leads across a voltage so rce while the f nction switch is in the
c rrent, resistance, or diode mode. Doing so can damage the meter.
5. ALWAYS discharge filter capacitors in power s pplies and disconnect the power when making
resistance or diode tests.
6. ALWAYS t rn off the power and disconnect the test leads before opening the covers to replace
the f se or batteries.
7. NEVER operate the meter nless the back cover and the battery and f se covers are in place
and fastened sec rely.
8. If the eq ipment is sed in a manner not specified by the man fact rer, the protection provided
by the eq ipment may be impaired.

Operating Instructions
WARNING: Risk of electrocution. igh-voltage circuits, both AC and DC, are extremely dangerous
and should be measured with great care.
1. ALWAYS turn the function switch to the OFF position when the meter is not in use.
2. If “OL” appears in the display during a measurement, the value exceeds the range you have
selected. Change to a higher range.
AC/DC VOLTAGE MEASUREMENTS
CAUTION: Do not measure DC voltages if a motor on the circuit is being switched ON or OFF.
Large voltage surges may occur that can damage the meter.
1. Rotate the function switch to the V AC or V DC position.
2. Insert the black test lead banana plug into the negative COM jack. Insert the red
test lead banana plug into the positive V jack.
3. Touch the black test probe tip to the negative side of the circuit.
Touch the red test probe tip to the positive side of the circuit.
4. Read the voltage in the display.
AC/DC CURRENT MEASUREMENTS
1. Insert the black test lead banana plug into the negative COM jack.
2. Press the MODE button to indicate “DC” or “AC” on the display.
3. For current measurements up to 2000µA, set the function switch to the µA position
and insert the red test lead banana plug into the µA/mA jack.
4. For current measurements up to 200 mA DC, set the function switch to the mA
position and insert the red test lead banana plug into the µA/mA jack.
5. For current measurements up to 10A DC, set the function switch to the 10A position
and insert the red test lead banana plug into the 10A jack.
6. Connect the test leads in series with the circuit under test.
7. Apply power to the circuit.
8. Read the current in the display.

RESISTANCE MEASUREMENTS
WARNING: To avoid electric shock, disconnect power to the unit under test and discharge all
capacitors before taking any resistance measurements. Remove the batteries and unplug the line
cords.
1. Rotate the function switch to the Ω position.
2. Insert the black test lead banana plug into the negative COM jack.
Insert the red test lead banana plug into the positive jack.
3. Touch the test probe tips across the device under test.
4. Read the resistance in the display.
CONTINUITY CHECK
WARNING: To avoid electric shock, never measure continuity on circuits or wires that have a
voltage potential.
1. Rotate the function switch to the position.
2. Insert the black lead banana plug into the negative COM jack.
Insert the red test lead banana plug into the positive jack.
3. Press the MODE button to indicate“ " on the display
4. Touch the test probe tips to the circuit or wire you wish to check.
5. If the resistance is less than the continuity threshold, the audible signal will sound.
DIODE TEST
1. Rotate the function switch to the green position.
2. Insert the black test lead banana plug into the negative COM jack and the red test
lead banana plug into the positive jack.
3. Press the MODE button to indicate “ “and “V” on the display.
4. Touch the test probes to the diode under test. Forward voltage will typically indicate
0.400 to 0.700V. Reverse voltage will indicate “OL”. Shorted devices will indicate
near 0V and an open device will indicate “OL” in both polarities.

NON-CONTACT INFRARED TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS
1. Rotate the function switch to the IR position. The uppe ight fou digit tempe atu e display will
switch on.
2. P ess the MODE button to select °F o °C.
3. Aim the inf a ed senso (top of mete ) at the su face to be measu ed.
4. P ess and Hold the IRT button to tu n on the IR the momete and lase pointe . The lase
pointe identifies the su face spot to be measu ed and “SCAN” will flash in the display.
5. Read the tempe atu e in the display.
6. The a ea of the su face to be measu ed must be la ge than the spot size as dete mined by the
distance to spot size values listed in the specification table.
7. Release the IRT button to tu n the IR the momete and lase pointe off. “HOLD” and the
final measu ed value will emain in the display.
WARNING: Do not directly view or direct t e laser pointer at an eye. Low powe visible lase s
do not no mally p esent a haza d, but may p esent some potential fo haza d if viewed di ectly fo
extended pe iods of time.
IR Spot to Distance Diagram
The 4:1 spot to distance atio dete mines the size of the measu ed su face a ea with espect to the
distance the mete is held away f om the su face.
IR Measurement Notes
1. The object unde test should be la ge than the spot (ta get) size calculated by the field of view
diag am.
2. If the su face of the object unde test is cove ed with f ost, oil, g ime, etc., clean befo e taking
measu ements.
3. If an object's su face is highly eflective, apply masking tape o flat black paint to the su face
befo e measu ing.
4. The mete will not make measu ements th ough glass steam, dust, and smoke.
5. To find a hot spot, aim the mete outside the a ea of inte est then scan ac oss (in an up and
down motion) until the hot spot is located.

AUTORANGING/MANUAL RANGE SELECTION
When the mete is fi st switched on, it automatically ente s the AutoRanging mode. This
automatically selects the best ange fo the measu ements being made and is gene ally the best
mode fo most measu ements. Fo measu ement situations equi ing that a ange be manually
selected, pe fo m the following:
1. P ess the RANGE button. The “AUTO” display indicato will tu n off.
2. P ess the RANGE key to step th ough the available anges until the ange desi ed is selected.
3. P ess and hold the RANGE button fo 2 seconds to exit manual anging.
Note: Manual anging does not apply to the Tempe atu e, Diode and Continuity functions.
MAX (MAXIMUM READING) MODE
1. P ess the MAX button to activate the MAX mode. The display icon "MAX" will appea . The mete
will display and hold the maximum eading and will update only when a new maximum value is
detected.
2. P ess the MAX button again to exit the mode.
Note: Max does not apply to the Resistance, Diode and Continuity functions.
DISPLAY BACKLIGHT
P ess and hold the IRT button fo 2 second to tu n the backlight on. The backlight will
automatically tu n off afte app oximately 10 seconds o p ess and hold the button again fo 2
seconds to manually tu n it off.
HOLD
The HOLD function f eezes the eading in the display. P ess the HOLD button momenta ily to
activate o to exit the HOLD function.
Note: The HOLD button does not function in the IR measu ement mode.
AUTO SLEEP
If no button is p essed the auto sleep featu e will place the mete in sleep mode afte app oximately
15 minutes of ope ation. If this happens, p ess any button to wake the mete o switch the mete to
OFF if it no longe in use.

Maintenance

WARNING: To avoid elect ic shock, do not ope ate the mete until the batte y and fuse cove s a e
in place and fastened secu ely.
This MultiMete is designed to p ovide yea s of dependable se vice, if the following ca e inst uctions
a e followed:
1. KEEP THE METER DRY. If it gets wet, wipe it off.
2. USE AND STORE THE METER IN NORMAL TEMPERATURES. Tempe atu e ext emes can
sho ten the life of the elect onic pa ts and disto t o melt plastic pa ts.
3. HANDLE THE METER GENTLY AND CAREFULLY. D opping it can damage the elect onic pa ts
o the case.
4. KEEP THE METER CLEAN. Wipe the case occasionally with a damp cloth. DO NOT use
chemicals, cleaning solvents, o dete gents.
5. USE ONLY FRESH BATTERIES OF THE RECOMMENDED SIZE AND TYPE. Remove old o
weak batte ies so they do not leak and damage the unit.
6. IF THE METER IS TO BE STORED FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, the batte ies should be
emoved to p event damage to the unit.
BATTERY and FUSE Repla ement
WARNING: To avoid elect ic shock, disconnect the test leads f om any sou ce of voltage befo e
emoving the batte y cove .
1. Tu n powe off and disconnect the test leads f om the mete .
2. Lift the mete stand to expose the batte y cove .
3. Open the ea batte y/fuse compa tment by emoving the Phillips head sc ew on the lowe ea of
the mete .
4. Ca efully pull down on the cove just enough to elease the latch and then lift it off. The cove will
not pull down all the way.
5. Remove the old batte y o fuse and install a new one of the co ect ating.
6. Place the batte y/fuse cove back in place. Secu e with the sc ew.
WARNING: To avoid elect ic shock, do not ope ate the mete until the batte y cove is in place and
fastened secu ely.
NOTE: If the mete does not wo k p ope ly, check the fuses and eplace the batte y to make su e that
they a e still good and that they a e p ope ly inse ted.
Battery Safety Reminders
