2 Safety
2.1 General safety information
Note
Failure of the safety function
Common cause failures, subsequently called CCF, cause the failure of the safety func
tion, since in this case both channels in a two-channel system fail simultaneously.
If measures to control the CCFs are not observed, the safety function of the soft-start/
quick exhaust valve can be impaired.
Make sure that the described measures for managing the CCFs are observed
(è3.2 Common cause failures (CCF) and 15.1 Safety characteristics).
Note
Failure of the safety function
Failure to observe the technical data can result in the failure of the safety function.
Observe the technical data (è15 Technical data).

2.2 Intended usage
The MS6-SV-...-D-10V24 hereafter called the MS6-SV-D, is an electro-pneumatic soft-start/quick
exhaust valve designed in accordance with EN ISO 4414. The MS6-SV-D is intended for the following
purposes:
– Pressure release and pressure switch-on in higher levels in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1
– Gradual pressure build-up in pneumatic piping systems and terminals in industry
The MS6-SV-D has two safety functions:
– pressure release
– protection from unexpected start-up (non-switching)
The MS6-SV-D is designed to change from the normal position to the switching position when both
coils are energised simultaneously. The normal position is achieved by switching off both coils.
The MS6-SV-D is intended for installation in machines or automation technology systems and must be
used exclusively as follows:
– in an industrial environment
– within the limits defined by the technical data (è15 Technical data)
– in its original condition, without unauthorised modifications
– in perfect technical condition
– in accordance with the specifications of these operating instructions
2.3 Foreseeable misuse
The following foreseeable misuses are among those not approved as intended use:
– use outdoors
– use as control for coupling/braking combinations on mechanical presses
– bypassing of the safety function
– use in reversible operation (using supply air instead of exhaust air, and vice versa)
– vacuum operation
Note
In the event of damage caused by unauthorised manipulation or use other than that
intended, the guarantee is invalidated and the manufacturer is not liable for damages.

5 Application and function
5.1 Application
The MS6-SV-D is equipped with proximity sensors, which are intended for diagnostics of the internal
valves. Performance level d/e in category 3 can be achieved by using proximity sensors S1 and S2.
Performance level e in category 4 can be achieved by using an additional proximity sensor S3.

5.3 Switching logic
In the normal position (completely exhausted MS6-SV-D), the pilot valves V1 and V2 are not actuated.
If both pilot valves are actuated, the MS6-SV-D switches first to the switching position 1 and then,
when the switch-through pressure is reached, automatically into switching position 2 (èFig. 4).

5.6 Switch-through pressure
There is a flow control screw in the end cap. The flow control screw can be used to generate a gradual
pressure build-up of output pressure p2 (èFig. 10). The flow and thus the pressure rise can be adjus
ted by turning the flow control screw. When the output pressure p2 reaches about 50 % of the operat
ing pressure p1, the maximum flow rate is enabled.

6 Recommendation for activation and diagnostics
If the results of activation and the sensor signals S1, S2 and S3 are not plausible, carry
out the following measures:
1. Switch off voltage to pilot valves V1 and V2.
2. Output error message.
3. Prevent new switching.
Sequence Activity Status and status
transitions
Diagnostics at each switching operation
1. Apply voltage to pilot valves V1 and V2. V1 = 1; V2 = 1
2. Record edge change at proximity sensors S1 and S2. S1 = 1 è0; S2 = 1 è0
Optional, when using a third proximity switch S3:
3. Record edge change at proximity sensor S3. S3 = 1 è0
Corresponding response times ( èFig. 4).
Diagnostics at each resetting to the normal position
1. Switch off voltage to pilot valves V1 and V2. V1 = 0; V2 = 0
2. Record edge change at proximity sensors S1 and S2. S1 = 0 è1; S2 = 0 è1
Optional, when using a third proximity switch S3:
3. Record edge change at proximity sensor S3. S3 = 0 è1
Corresponding response times ( èFig. 4).
Diagnostics in normal position
Pay attention to forced switch on/off (è15.1 Safety characteristics).
1. Apply voltage to pilot valve V1 V1 = 1
2. Record edge change at proximity switch S1. S1 = 1 è0
3. Switch off voltage to pilot valve V1. V1 = 0
4. Record edge change at proximity switch S1. S1 = 0 è1
5. Apply voltage to pilot valve V2. V2 = 1
6. Record edge change at proximity sensor S2. S2 = 1 è0
7. Switch off voltage to pilot valve V2. V2 = 0

7 Installation
7.1 Mechanical installation
Note
To avoid damaging the connected lines, note the following points:
Use mounting parts (e.g. mounting brackets MS6-WP).
Note
Failure of the safety function
The safety function of pressure release might fail if the distance between the pneumatic
silencer and base is not at least 15 mm.
Observe minimum distance of 15 mm below the pneumatic silencer (èFig. 6).
The open space ensures trouble free exhausting.
Information about mounting the module connector, sub-base and mounting bracket can
be found in the operating instructions enclosed with the relevant accessories.

Assembly with MS-series service units
Note
Failure of the safety function
Incorrect installation in the service combination can result in failure of the pressure
release safety function.
Only devices that do not impair pressure release (also after a possible malfunction
of the device) may be placed downstream of the MS6-SV-D.

Proceed as follows when assembling with one or more service units from the same series (èFig. 8):
1. Remove the MS6-END 1cover cap, if present,
from the side to be assembled (slide upwards).
2. Insert a seal 2between the individual units
(module connector MS6-MV or mounting
bracket MS6-WP/WPB included in the scope
of delivery).
3. Place the module connectors 3in the slots of
the individual devices.
4. Fasten the module connectors with two

7.2 Pneumatic installation
7.2.1 Port 1 and 2
If using fittings with width across flats greater than SW24:
Remove the cover cap MS6-END, if present (slide upwards).
If using fittings:
Note the permissible screw-in depth of the connecting thread is 10 mm.
For greater screw-in depths, use the port plates MS6-AG…/AQ… from Festo.
Do not use particle-emitting sealants.
7.2.2 Port 3
When bleeding off a system through the MS6-SV-D, high sound pressure levels are generated.
We therefore recommend that you use a silencer.
The use of a commercially available silencer is possible. However, it must be able to bleed off as well as
safety silencer UOS-1 (è15.2 General data).
Note
Failure of the safety function
When using a commercially available silencer, the silencer may become clogged, which
can result in reduced bleeding. This can lead to complete failure of the safety function
(increased residual pressure in the system after bleeding off).
Use the safety silencer UOS-1 designed for the device
(è13 Accessories and spare parts).
