This document provides a detailed description of the steps to follow when using the OWL Fishing Tool System and should
be considered as a reference only.
Parts required for use:
The following parts are required in order to use the OWL Fishing Tool System. For example, in the case of an N-size fishing
tool, the following parts are required:
• OWL Fishing Tool NW
• BW rod (5 ft/1.5 m or more)
• Coupling BW r/pin to BW r/pin to attach the tool to the BW rod
• Adaptor BW r/pin to your specific threads r/box (ex. NO/NT)
IMPORTANT
Make sure water can run all the way through your assembly as the OWL Fishing Tool is activated by water pressure.

PREPARATION
ENGAGING THE FISH
1. Examine the fishing tool for any damage, make sure all parts move freely, and that it is the correct size for the
rods being fished. Perform a test on the surface to ensure a proper fit.
2. Make sure the bore hole has been flushed clean of all drilling muds and debris before lowering the fishing tool.
3. Connect the fishing tool to the fishing string using a rod coupling, a 5 foot rod of the same diameter as the tool,
and the appropriate adaptor.
1. Ensure that the location of the top of the fish is known to the inch.
2. Lower the OWL fishing tool to within 12” (30 cm) of the fish.
3. Take note of the rod weight on the gage.
4. Lower the fishing string slowly into the fish, by means of the hydraulic feed.
IMPORTANT
Never push the fishing tool into the fish so far as to bottom out on the wireline rod adaptor. Doing so will eliminate
the possibility of releasing the fishing tool from the fish.

POSITION OF THE FISHING TOOL
ACTIVATING THE FISHING TOOL
1. Start the water pump and close the release valve. Fill the fishing string with water and pump 300 psi water
pressure onto the tool.
2. Mark your rods at the foot clamp level.
3. Pull back the rod string using the feed cylinder and read the rod weight gage. An increase in rod weight on the
gage indicates that the tool is engaged within the fish.
4. Stop the pump, open the release valve and remove the water swivel. With the water pressure now stabilized,
and the weight of the fish will keep the 3 locking keys engaged.
5. Remove the rods from the hole using a slow steady retrieval. It is possible to rotate the tool to the right to help
release the fish, but there should be no downward movement of the drill string during this operation as this can
release the tool.
RELEASING THE FISHING TOOL
MAINTENANCE
In case of any problems that may be encountered, for example, if the rods are still stuck to the bottom of the bore
hole, the fishing tool can be released, as follows:
1. Make sure there is no water pressure
within the drill string.
2. Allow enough time for the water to
completely drain out of the rod string
and for water pressure to stabilize
within the bore hole. Once drained,
all internal pressure is removed
from the plunger. To accelerate this
process, you can add water between
the rods and the casing.
3. Lower the rod string a few inches to retract the 3 locking wedges. Refer to your mark on the rods. Keys will
retract and disengage the fishing tool from the rods.
4. Slowly remove the fishing tool from the lost rods, and then trip out at regular pace.
After each use, the OWL fishing tool should be disassembled, cleaned and inspected for damage or signs of wear,
reassembled and lubricated.
Proper maintenance of the fishing tool will ensure good performance and extend the life of the tool.
