TheSimradFX80isaninnovativeandadvancedcatchmonitoringsystemthatallows
youtomonitortheshactivityinsideyourshinggearusingalivevideostream.The
FX80isusedwiththeSimradDFS75high-resolutiontrawlsonar.
Areal-timevideofeedfromthetrawlhaslongbeendesiredbyshermenandresearchers
alike,butcablingandslipringshavebeenanissue.Oneoftheprimarydesigncriteria
oftheSimradFX80systemwastomakeitworkonexistingthird-wirecables.We
haveachievedthisgoalbyusingexistingcopper-corecoaxcablestoeasethecostand
reduceinstallationtime.
Real-timevideocanbeusedtoaddressby-catchandby-catchavoidanceissues.Trawl
behaviourcanbeviewedinrealtimewiththeFX80system.Fishbehaviourcanalso
beobservedinrealtime,takingspeculationandguessworkoutoftheequation.This
innovationhasthepotentialtoincreasetheefciencyofanytrawlingoperationand
willstimulatethecreativityofshermen,trawlandgearmanufacturers,andofcourse,
Simrad.
TheSimradDFS75TrawlsonarisintegratedintotheSimradFX80systemtoestablishan
efcientandaccuratemonitoringsystemforyourgearandyourcatch.Thecombination
ofthehigh-resolutionimagesfromthetrawlsonarandthelivevideofeedprovides
youwithanunparalleledopportunitytoidentifyandanalyzebothtrawlmovements
andshbehaviour.
TheSimradFX80systemisbasedonawell-provenhigh-resolutionunderwatercamera
fromKongsbergMaritime.Accompaniedbyahigh-densityLEDlamp(duetothe
lackofambientlight),thecameraisusuallyplacedundertheheadropeorinthecod
end,pointingatthedesiredangle.ThecamerasendsitsinformationtotheFX80
CommunicationHubinstalledinsidetheFX80DeploymentUnit,whichisusually
locatedneartheheadrope.ThecommunicationbetweenthehubandFX80Bridge
ControlUnitismadebyastandardthird-wirecable.
TheentireSimradFX80system-withlivevideoandhigh-resolutionsonar-iscontrolled
fromastandardProcessorUnitprovidedbySimrad.Itissmall,yetpowerful,and
containsnomovingparts.Thesystemdesignallowsyoutousetwodisplays.Many
userspreferthisconguration,asitallowsthemtouseonedisplayforthetrawlsonar
presentations,andanotherforthelivevideofeed.

TheFX80CameraUnit(containingthecameraandLEDlamp)canberemotelymounted
onthetrawlupto600metersfromtheheadrope.Inthesecasesthereisaneedfor
afourth-wirewinchtohandlethiscable.Thiswinchneedstobeinstalledondeckin
apracticallocationasthe(upto)600metersofcablewillbespooledentirelyoffand
thenbackonwitheachtow.Inapplicationswherethecameraislocatedonakiteorat
theheadrope,thereisnoneedforthiscableandwinch.Thisfourthwireissuppliedby
Simrad.Therequiredlengthcanbedecidedatthetimeofpurchase,orlengthscanbe
addedatalatertime.Thesystemitselfisnotsetforanyparticularlength.
Thenumberofdisplaysmustbechosentotthepreferencesofthecrew.Manyusers
preferseparatedisplaysforthetrawlsonarandthelivevideofeed.

DisplaysarenotincludedinthestandarddeliveryfromSimrad.Thesearecommercial

UnitisthecomputerthatcontrolstheFX80system.ItisavitalpartoftheFX80Catch
monitoringsystem.TheProcessorUnitcontainstheoperationalsoftware,andoffers
theuserinterfacethatallowsyoutocontroltheFX80.Furthermore,itoffersanumber
ofserialandEthernetlinesforcommunicationwithexternaldevices.TheProcessor
Unitisnormallymountedonthebridge.
AlthoughacomputercanbeorderedfromKongsberg
MaritimeasapartoftheFX80delivery,itisalso
possibletopurchaseonelocally.Ifyoupurchasea
computerlocally,makesurethatthechosenmodel
meetsthefunctionalandtechnicalrequirements.The
computermustmeettheoperatingsystemrequirementsprovidedbyMicrosoft®.The
computermustalsoprovidethenecessaryinterfacefacilitiesthatyourFX80needsto
communicatewithperipheralsystems.Thecomputermustbedesignedforruggeduse,
andtheconstructionmustbeabletowithstandthevibrationsandmovementsofavessel.
TheoperatingsystemmustbeMicrosoft®64-bitWindows10.
AhighqualityEthernetadapterisrequired.IfyouwishtoconnecttheProcessorUnitto
theship’snetwork,youwillneedtwoEthernetadapters.
AsuitablecomputermaybeprovidedwiththeFX80.Consultyourlocaldealeroragent
formoreinformation.
TheProcessorUnitisdesignedforruggedmaritimeuse.Ithasbeencustomizedby
KongsbergMaritime.Thecomputerisbasedonacommercialdesign,butthesoftware
andhardwarehavebeenspeciedbyKongsbergMaritimetosuittheFX80requirements.
Itissetupwithallnecessarysoftware.
Note
TheoperatingsystemhasbeenmodiedtomakethecomputerworkwiththeFX80.
ThesemodicationsincluderemovalofallsafetyfeaturesprovidedbyMicrosoft®.The
built-inrewallandallvirusprotectionfeatureshavebeenremoved.Anyattempttouse
thecomputerforanyotherpurposesthanFX80operation,suchasgames,desktop
applicationsandInternetconnection,mayresultinseriousdamagetotheprogram.Such
damagesarenotcoveredbythewarranty.
TheFX80designsupportstwodisplays.Thiscanbeapracticalsolution.Onedisplayis
thensetuptomonitorthevideofeed,whiletheotherisusedtooperatethetrawlsonar.

TheBridgeControlUnitprovidesalltheinterfaceandpowersupplyfunctionalityfor
theSimradFX80system.
ItisconnectedtotheCommunicationHubintheTrawl
Unitwithahigh-qualitythird-wirecable.Thiscable
isusedforbothdatacommunication(livevideoand
sonarfeed)andpower.
TheBridgeControlUnitisconnectedtothe
computerwithanEthernetcable.AdditionalEthernet
connectionsallowyoutoconnectasecondcomputer,
and/orinterfacetheship’snetwork.Aseriallineis
providedtocommunicatewiththeship’snavigation
system.
TheBridgeControlUnitisdesignedforinstallationina19"rack.Itstotalheightis4U,
andthedepthisapproximately490mmincludingthehandles.
TrawlUnit
TheTrawlUnitismadeupofseveralcomponents,includingtheDFS75SonarHeadand
CommunicationHub,enclosedinaDeploymentPack.
TheTrawlUnit’sDeploymentPackisthemain
underwatercontainerfortheSimradFX80
system.Itismadefrompolyurethaneandhas
beendesignedfortoughuseintheharshestof
environments,yetitiseasytohandle.
Therearetwoseparateunitsassembledwithin
thesteelframeoftheDeploymentPack.The
rstunitistheDFS75SonarHead.Thesecond
unitistheCommunicationHub.Thethird-wire
cableisconnectedtothishub,whichprovidestheinterfacestotheCameraUnitand
theDFS75SonarHead.
Themountingkitsuppliedcontainsthestrain-reliefcablegland,thepigtail,andother
hardwaredevicesusedtoattachthetrawlcabletotheheadropeonthetrawl.

CameraUnit
TheCameraUnitistheassemblythatcontainstheunderwatermonochromecameraand
thepowerfulLEDlamp.
Theambientlightconditionsmaybepoorin
deepwater.Forthisreason,theFX80Camera
UnithasbeenttedwithapowerfulLEDlamp.
TheCameraUnitisnormallymountedinside
thetrawlopening,orabovethecodend.Itis
connectedtotheCommunicationHubinsidethe
TrawlUnitusingadedicatedfourth-wirecable.
ThereareseveralCameraUnitmodelsavailable
—theNorthAmericanandEuropeanmodels
areshownhere.TheNorthAmericanCamera
Unithasametalframewiththecameraand
lampmountedinside.OntheEuropeanCamera
Unit,thecameraandlamparemountedinside
apolyurethanedeploymentpack.
Tip
Onlargetrawls,thedistancebetweentheTrawl
UnitandtheCameraUnitwillrequireavery
longfourth-wirecable.Werecommendtheuse
ofasecondwinchwithdrumtoholdthiscable.

Networksecurity
IfaFX80systemisconnectedtoalocalareanetwork,datasecurityisimportant.
EquipmentmanufacturedbyKongsbergMaritimeisfrequentlyconnectedtothevessel's
localareanetwork(LAN).Whenyouconnectacomputertoalocalareanetworkyou
willalwaysexposethedataonthatcomputer.Allothercomputersconnectedtothesame
networkmaybeabletoaccessyourdata.Severalthreatsmayimmediatelyoccur:
•Remotecomputerscanreadthedata.
•Remotecomputerscanchangethedata.
•Remotecomputerscanchangethebehaviourofthecomputer,forexampleby
installingunwantedsoftware.
Usually,twoparametersareusedtodenethethreatlevel:
1Thelikelihoodthatanyremotecomputerwilldoanyoftheabove.
2Thedamagedoneifaremotecomputersucceedsdoingthis.
KongsbergMaritimehasnoinformationregardingthecompletesysteminstallationon
anyvessel.SystemsprovidedbyKongsbergMaritimeareregardedasstand-aloneofine
systems.Theyarestand-aloneeventhoughtheymaybeconnectedtoanetworkfor
sensorinterfacesand/ordatadistribution.
Note
NonetworksafetyapplicationsareinstalledonKongsbergMaritimecomputers.The
computersarethereforenotprotectedagainstviruses,malwareorunintentionalaccess
byexternalusers.
SecuringtheFX80systemitselfhasnomeaningunlessthereisapolicyinplacethat
securesallcomputersinthenetwork.Thispolicymustincludephysicalaccessbytrained
andtrustedusers.Thecustomer/enduseroftheFX80systemwillalwaysbeincharge
ofdeningandimplementingasecuritypolicy,andprovidingtherelevantnetwork
securityapplications.
