MAXIMIZING YOUR PERFORMANCE AT SEA
Full control from setting to catch...
The PI44/54 has a built in 1kW
dual frequency echosounder.
You can choose between 38,
50 or 200 kHz where two
frequencies can be shown at
the same time.
Robust, intelligent, visible and cable free
New crystal clear 10 and 15 inch screens.
Bottom trawl with 4m trawl height,
decreasing with 1m/min. Door
spread is 80,8m, increasing with
2m/min. Catch sensor 1 has not
been triggered yet. Catch sensor
2 is triggered and has been for
19 min during last haul.
The split screen is showing sensor
information, surface temperature
and echosounder image. The echo-
sounder displays bottom expansion
and trawl markers.
SIMRAD
PI
SYSTEM
To know how your fishing gear behaves is vital for efficient
fishing. The PI system provides you with vital information
such as the stability of the doors (door spread sensors),
quality of your catch (catch sensors), efficiency of your bottom
trawl (bottom contact sensor) or correct time of purse seining
(depth/sink rate sensor). In addition the PI system has a built
in echosounder all in a compact cabinet.
The cabinet comes in three sizes PI32 (6”), PI44 (10”)
and the PI54 (15”) where the PI32 can receive data from
3 sensors and the PI44/54 can receive data from 6 sensors
at the same time. The quality of Simrad echosounders is
recognized all over the world and now it is integrated in the
PI system. Important features like bottom expansion, shift
function, pulse length and White Line are standard.
Dual frequency Exact trawl information Bottom expansion
Spread sensors with optimum accuracy
Door sensor adapter for quick
and safe handling, the sensor is
mounted easily in 30 seconds!
The spread sensors are
measuring the distance
between the trawl doors
or wings.
Twin spread sensors
A set of Twin Spread sensors consist of one spread
sensor and two remotes. The spread sensor is mounted
on the port door, one remote is mounted on the centre
weight and the other remote is mounted on the
starboard door.
Make sure that the doors
are stable and your trawl
is efficient.
▼
▼
▼
Spread sensors are vital to ensure correct
rigging of the Trawl or Twin Trawl. The stability of
the doors is constantly and accurately monitored
with the PI spread sensors. Spread sensors
monitor the spread and stability between the
doors on a single trawl while the Twin Spread
sensor is capable of monitoring the spread
and stability between doors and between port
door and centre weight.
Update rate from the Single and Twin Spread
sensors are user selectable and the fastest,
most accurate and reliable on the market.

Hight sensors
The height sensor provides information about stability
and height of the trawl. The PI Height sensor has the
fastest update on the market which enables you to make
the right adjustment on warps at an early stage.
Trawl with 8m trawl height,
decreasing with 1m/min.

New PI Height Sensor.
Solid bottom contact sensors
Accurate purse seining
Data sharing Depth and temperature Surface temperature meter
Purse seining with two depth sensors
and one temperature sensor. The
water temperature is indicated in
the blue area. The ground line is
passing through a thermo cline.
Display with an alarm function, set
for increasing or decreasing tempe-
rature. Temperature versus time can
be shown graphically on the lower
part of the display.
Integrated information from the PI
system can be sent to other Simrad
equipment. Here is information from
3 depth sensors displayed in relation
to the fish school on a Simrad SP90
sonar.
All metal parts on a PI
sensor is made out of
titanium to ensure
durability and a long
lasting sensor.
The Bottom contact sensor monitors if the ground gear is on
or off the bottom. Increase your efficiency; stay in touch with
the bottom. Do not tow with heavy bottom gear; trim it till you
have the perfect balance.
The Simrad PI Catch Monitoring
system receives information from
up to six sensors at the same
time. The system uses a hull
mounted- or over the side hydro-
phone. The net’s depth, water
temperature and the important
bottom contact information are
displayed in large digits or easy
to understand graphics. The
Simrad PI system is designed
with different codes to avoid
interference between vessels
operating close together. The
small size, quick update rate,
long battery life and its long-range
capability, allows the PI system to
be installed on any size net, from
a small sardine net to a large
tuna net. The PI system inter-
faces to the latest professional
Simrad echosounders and
sonars.
Bottom contact sensor on
a bottom trawl gives you fast
update and accurate information.
Adjust the length of the sensing
chain to see when the ground gear
lifts a few cm off the bottom.
Bottom contact sensor on a purse
seine gives an alarm when the
sensing weight touches the bottom.
This enables you to fish close to a
rough bottom.
Bottom contact sensor on a
pelagic trawl. Adjust the length of
the sensing chain to avoid towing
on the bottom and tearing the net.
Purse seine Pelagic trawl
Bottom trawl
Bottom contact is indicated on
screen and with an audio alarm.
The net has been off the bottom
for 7 minutes.
All vital information displayed on a powerful echosounder
Main echosounder screen, showing trawl lines
starting where the trawl is. This information is
either taken from the depth sensor or the height
sensor. The built in trawl calculator calculates the
distance to the trawl based on the ships speed
and wire length. The trawl height on the screen
is 4.1m off the bottom.
The bottom expansion function is a vital tool to
distinguish fish from the bottom. Here the white
line is turned on to even easier separate fish
and bottom. The trawl line will also be displayed
in the bottom expansion display giving a better
resolution.
High performance transducers
Installing the highly acclaimed Simrad transducers
will give you maximum performance from the echo-
sounder. The Combi-C and D transducers come in
38/200kHz and 50/200kHz and is the perfect
match for the PI44/54.
Active PI Charger
The PI Charger enables
intelligent and safe
charging of all sensors.
Hydrophones
The hydrophone is mounted in the hull facing
the net. For Purse seine one hydrophone is
installed pointing at the purse seine. For trawl
it is recommended to install two hydrophones
facing the trawl. This will ensure constant
communication during turning and if the trawl
is off centre line. A portable hydrophone is also
available for trials and as
intermediate solution while
waiting to haul the vessel.
Automatic hydrophone selector
A trawl is often not in a straight line behind
the vessel, it is on one of the sides. The automatic
hydrophone selector switch selects the hydrophone
that has the best signal level and makes sure
that you have optimum reception at all time.
The switch can be set to manual
if necessary.
The new sensor family
The PI family is continuously growing. The
new cable based FS70 system can be integrated
with the PI system. All information from the PI
system can be displayed on the FS giving pelagic
trawlers better control of their trawl and
a perfect back-up if the third wire breaks.
New PI Height Sensor.
