EASY CRIB INSPECTION STEPS TO ENSURE CHILDREN’S SAFETY
Proper crib maintenance is a necessary action on the part of child care providers to ensure cribs they
are using with their infants are safe and secure. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
recommends performing crib safety checks on a regular basis. Furthermore, the CPSC recommends taking a
crib out of service if any problems are found during the safety check. This checklist is provided to assist the
caregiver in inspecting and properly maintaining their cribs.
4 STEPS 4 SAFETY
™
1CHECK FASTENERS
4CHECK CASTERS
2CHECK TEETHING RAILS
3CHECK MATTRESS
Clear teething rails should be inspected
on a regular basis to confirm they are
free of cracks where a child’s lips, teeth
or tongue could become entrapped. Also,
teething rails are a normal wear item
and can loosen over time. If this occurs
please contact customer service to
order replacement teething rails.
Fasteners must be inspected on a routine basis to ensure they are not missing,
tightened securely, and are in good working order.
Caster fasteners must be inspected to ensure
they are fastened securely to the crib. This is
especially important prior to evacuation drills.
Using a crib for evacuation with loose or
missing fasteners may result in serious injury.
Casters must also be inspected to ensure
they are clean and roll smoothly. Dirt buildup
on caster surface allows caster to slide, even
in the locked position.
Mattresses must be inspected to ensure they
are free of tears or rips and fit snugly in the
crib. If mattress is ripped or torn it should
be removed from service. When a mattress
is pushed to one side there should not be a
gap on the opposing side greater than one
inch. Use only Foundations®replacement
mattresses with Foundations®cribs.
SIDE RAIL FASTENERS
Side rail fasteners secure the long ends of the
cribs to the short ends. These side rail fasteners
only require one wrench to tighten.
CASTER FASTENERS
Caster fasteners secure the caster to the crib leg
and requires TWO Allen wrenches to tighten. These
fasteners require the most frequent inspections and
should always be checked prior to evacuation drills.
MATTRESS BOARD FASTENERS
Mattress board fasteners secure the mattress board
to the sides and ends of the crib. These fasteners
require TWO Allen wrenches to tighten.
SAFEREACH®FASTENERS
SafeReach®fasteners may require one or two Allen
wrenches to tighten, depending on their location.
The SafeReach®feature is optional and may not
be included on your crib.
