3 Safety instructions
-
Only a trained electrician, in particular for
wiring the enclosures with mains power, may
perform assembly and installation of the UPS
System. Other tasks, such as the assembly
and installation of system components with
tested standard connectors, and only in-
structed personnel may perform the operation
and configuration of the System.
-
Do not open the case, as there are no ser-
viceable parts inside. Your warranty will be
void.
-
Do not try to repair the unit yourself; contact
your local supplier or your warranty will be
void.
-
If liquids are spilt onto the System or foreign
objects dropped into the unit, the warranty will
be null and void.
-
Do not install the system in an environment
with sparks, smoke or gas.
-
The Unit is designed to be installed and
commissioned in a sheltered, controlled envi-
ronment as follows:
- Operating temperature 0-40°C and 0-
90% non-condensing humidity.
- Always avoid contact with direct sun-
light.
- Do not install in inflammable or hazard-
ous environment.
- Dusty, corrosive and salty envi-
ronments can do damage to the Unit.
- Install the system indoors as it is not
designed for installation outdoors.
-
Install the system away from objects that
give off excessive heat and areas that are ex-
cessively wet.
-
Always switch off the maintenance by-
pass when relocating it.
-
Make sure that the AC main supply outlet
is correctly grounded.
-
Please ensure that the input voltage
matches the utility supply voltage.
-
Observe the valid regulations for the elec-
trical installation for the country in which the
unit is installed and operated, and the national
regulations for accident prevention. Also ob-
serve any company-internal regulations (work,
operating and safety regulations).
• Use only genuine or recommended parts and
accessories. The use of other parts can void
the liability for any resulting consequences.

4 Product description
Along with the connected UPS, the maintenance
bypass supports two operating modes – the UPS
mode and the bypass mode.
1. UPS mode (UPS available): When the main-
tenance bypass works in the UPS mode, the
UPS is supplied with power from the mains
(utility) and passes this on to the connected
load. In this mode, the UPS monitors the cur-
rent supply and protects the load against
power failure and voltage fluctuations.
Fig. 1 Maintenance bypass in UPS mode
2. Bypass mode (service mode): When the by-
pass is in bypass mode, the connected load is
supplied directly from the mains. In this mode,
the UPS can be switched off so that it can be
replaced or repaired. The load continues to be
supplied with power without interruption. How-
ever, the UPS in this mode does not protect
the load.

5.3 Installation
The maintenance bypass for the PMC12 System
can be installed in different ways. Choose the type
of installation best suited to your requirements.
The first installation steps are identical for all types
of installation.
Procedure:
1. Unpack the bypass and keep the packaging
materials for possible future use.
2. Inspect the equipment for shipping damage.
Report any shipping damage found to the for-
warder or our service department.
3. Make sure that the supplied cables are suit-
able for the connectors of your UPS.
4. Shut down the load connected to the UPS and
disconnect the load from the UPS. Shut down
the UPS and switch it off. Disconnect the UPS
from the mains.
5. Hardware installation varies with the installa-
tion position chosen.
(1) Rack installation
Screw mounting plate 1 from fig. 4 onto the main-
tenance bypass as shown in fig. 3.
(2) Installation behind the UPS
The maintenance bypass is installed on the rear of
the UPS as shown in fig. 5.
(3) Wall installation
Screw mounting plate 3 (fig. 6) onto the mainte-
nance bypass as shown in fig. 7.
6. Make sure that the bypass switch is set to
bypass ("Utility"). Connect the bypass input to
the mains ("Utility" connector); the orange
lamp on the bypass lights up.
7. Connect the UPS input cable to the socket on
the bypass marked "CONNECT UPS LINE
CORD HERE".
8. Connect the "TO UPS OUTPUT" connector on
the bypass to the UPS output connector.
9. Connect the load to the outputs ("Output") on
the bypass. The load is now supplied with
power via the bypass.
10. Switch on the UPS as described in the UPS
manual. Once the UPS is operational, the
green lamp on the bypass lights up.
11. You can now switch the bypass to "UPS". The
UPS now protects the load.

5.4 Replacing/repairing the UPS
Please observe the sequence of steps for UPS
replacement / repair.
1. UPS mode => bypass mode (service
bypass)
Step 1: Make sure that the orange lamp is lit. If
the lamp is not lit, please refer to the Fault de-
scription section on page 9.
Step 2: Switch the bypass switch from "UPS" to
"UTILITY" (bypass).
Step 3: Switch off the UPS.
Step 4: Disconnect all connections between the
UPS and the maintenance bypass.
Step 5: Now you can repair the UPS or connect a
new UPS control module.
2. Bypass mode (service bypass) => UPS
MODE
Step 1: Connect the input and output of the UPS
to the corresponding connectors on the bypass.
Switch on the UPS as described in the UPS man-
ual.
Step 2: Make sure that the green lamp for the
UPS on the bypass is lit. If the green lamp is off
even though the UPS is operational, please refer
to the Fault description section on page 9.
Step 3: Switch the bypass switch from "Utility" to
"UPS". Now the connected load is protected by
the UPS and supplied with power.

6 Fault description
If your UPS does not work properly, please refer to
the table below.
If a fault is not described in the table, please con-
tact the service address specified in section 8.
Problem Cause Solution
No mains voltage.
Have the mains
connection
checked by an
electrician.
Orange lamp is
not lit Bypass input
cable is not con-
nected to the
mains.
Connect the by-
pass input cable
to the mains.
The UPS output
is not active. Refer to the man-
ual of your UPS.
Green lamp on
the bypass is not
lit The UPS is not
connected to the
maintenance
bypass correctly.
Check the con-
nections between
the UPS and the
maintenance by-
pass.
Some or all con-
nected consum-
ers are not sup-
plied with power
Check to see if
one of the fuses
in the bypass has
been released.
Reset the minia-
ture circuit
breaker in ques-
tion.
The miniature
circuit-breakers
have been reset,
but the consum-
ers are still not
supplied with
power
The load con-
nected to the
bypass is too
high.
Reduce the con-
nected load.

Recycling
Rittal promotes recycling of its products.
Disposal systems, environmental condi-
tions and guidelines vary between coun-
tries and municipalities. Therefore Rittal
recommends consulting a specialist and the com-
petent authorities in your region to guarantee
proper disposal.
Waste electronic equipment / scrap
As the maintenance bypass primarily
consists of the components housing and
printed circuit board, the unit, in the event
that it is no longer needed, is to be dis-
posed of as waste electronic equipment.
It is not to be disposed of together with normal
domestic waste.
