VENTILATION SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Airflow(ventilation)throughthe dryer iscriticalintheabilityof
thedryertofunctionproperly.Heatandairarerequiredtodry
clothes.Heatprovidesenergytoevaporatethemoistureinthe
clothes.Airisusedtocarrytheheattotheclothesloadand
exhausttheevaporatedmoistureoutside.Withoutadequateair
flow,theheatedaircannotgettotheclothesandtheywon’t
dry.Therearetwomajorcomponentsinprovidingthedryer
withadequateairflow:supplyairandanexhaustsystem.If
eitheroftheseareseverelyrestricted,thefunctionofthedryer
willbereducedandinsomecasesleadtogasesbuildingupin
theresidencetoadangerouslevel.Also,thebettertheairflow,
thebetterthedryingperformanceandincreasedlongevityof
theappliance.
SUPPLYOFMAKEUPAIR
Airthatisdrawnthroughthedryerandexhaustedoutsidemust
bereplacedinthedwelling. Thereplacementairisknownas
make-upair.Makeupairisrequiredforalltypesofhousehold
devices,likefurnaces,waterheaters,clothesdryers,ranges,
kitchenandbathroomexhaustfans,andfireplaces.
Ifthedwelling isnotproperlyventilated,suchasinatightly
constructedhouse,theremaynotbeenoughmakeupair.Ifthis
conditionexists,gasesthatwouldnormallybeventedoutside
willbeslowedandcouldbuildupinthedwelling. Gaseswill
includecarbonmonoxideproducedduringcombustionin
appliancessuchasinfurnaces,waterheaters,ranges,dryers
andfireplaces.

exhaustfans,kitchenventilationsystems,clothesdryers,and
fireplacesshallbeconsideredindeterminingtheadequacyofa
spacetoprovideairrequirements”orCanadianNaturalGasand
PropaneCode.
– Improperventilationcould leadtoabuildup
ofgasesandahighconcentrationofcarbonmonoxide.
–Improperventilationcouldstarvethedryerof
makeupairandcouldcreateafirehazardaswellasincrease
dryingtimes
Donotuseplasticflexibleducttoexhaustthedryer.
Excessivelintcanbuildupinsideexhaustsystemandcreateafire
hazardandrestrictairflow.Restrictedairflowwillincreasedryer
times.Ifyourpresentsystemismadeupofplasticductormetal
foilduct,replaceitwitharigidorflexiblemetalduct.Ensurethe
presentductisfreeofanylintpriortoinstallingdryerduct.
Ifthedryerisnotexhaustedoutdoors,somefinelintwillbe
expelledintothelaundryarea.Anaccumulationoflintinany
areaofthehomecancreateahealthandfirehazard.Thedryer
exhaustsystemMUSTbeexhaustedtotheoutsideofthe
dwelling!
Donotallowcombustiblematerials(forexample:clothing,
draperies/curtains,paper)tocomeincontactwithexhaust
system.ThedryerMUSTNOTbeexhaustedintoachimney,a
wall,aceiling,oranyconcealedspaceofabuildingwhichcan
accumulatelint,resultinginafirehazard.
Exceedingthelengthofductpipeornumberofelbows
allowedinthe"MAXIMUMLENGTH"chartscancausean
accumulationoflintintheexhaustsystem. Pluggingthesystem
couldcreateafirehazard,aswellasincreasedryingtimes.
Donotscreentheexhaustendsoftheventsystem,noruse
anyscrewsorrivetstoassembletheexhaustsystem.Lintcan
becomecaughtinthescreen,onthescrewsorrivets,clogging
theductworkandcreatingafirehazardaswellasincreasing
dryingtimes.Useanapprovedventhoodtoterminatetheduct
outdoors,andsealalljointswithducttape.Allmaleductpipe
fittingsMUST beinstalleddownstreamwiththeflowofair.
Explosionhazard.Donotinstallthedryerwhere
gasolineorotherflammablesarekeptorstored.Ifthedryeris
installedinagarage,itmustbeaminimumof18inches(45.7cm)
abovethefloor.Failuretodosocanresultindeath,explosion,
fireorburns.
Ininstallationswheretheexhaustsystemisnotdescribedinthe
followingcharts,thefollowingmethodmustbeusedtodetermine
iftheexhaustsystemisacceptable:
1. Connectaninclinedordigitalmanometerbetweenthedryer
andthepointtheexhaustconnectstothedryer.
2. Setthedryertimerandtemperaturetoairfluff(cooldown)
andstartthedryer.
3. Readthemeasurementonthemanometer.
4. ThesystembackpressureMUSTNOTbehigherthan0.75
inchesofwatercolumn.Ifthesystembackpressureisless
than0.75inchesofwatercolumn,thesystemisacceptable.If
themanometerreadingishigherthan0.75inchesofwater
column,thesystemistoorestrictiveandtheinstallationis
unacceptable.
EXHAUST SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Useonly4inch(10.2cm)diameter(minimum)rigidorflexible
metalductandapprovedventhoodwhichhasaswing-out
damper(s)thatopenwhenthedryerisinoperation.Whenthe
dryerstops,thedampersautomaticallyclosetopreventdrafts
andtheentranceofinsectsandrodents.Toavoidrestrictingthe
outlet,maintainaminimumof12inches(30.5cm)clearance
betweentheventhoodandthegroundoranyotherobstruction.
Thefollowingarespecificrequirementsfor
properandsafeoperationofyourdryer.Failuretofollowthese
instructionscancreateexcessivedryingtimesandfire
hazards.
