Introduction
Your PC is available with various configuration levels with different hardware and software. In
addition, you can incorporate operable drives (for example DAT drive), a second hard disk, as well
as other boards.
This operating manual tells you how to put your PC into operation and how to operate it in daily use.
This description applies for all configuration levels. Depending on the configuration level chosen
some of the hardware components described may not be available on your PC. Please observe the
notes on your operating system.
Depending on the configuration selected, the operating system is preinstalled on your hard disk (e.g.
Windows 2000).
Your PC has a number of security features to ensure that no unauthorised persons can access your
data, for example, you can activate a screen saver with password protection. For example, you can
activate a screen saver with password protection or mechanically lock your PC with the optional
casing lock. The security functions in the BIOS Setup also allow you to protect your data by means of
passwords. In addition, systems with a SmartCard reader offer additional protection.
DeskUpdate allows you under some operating systems to easily and quickly install the latest drivers
and operating system extensions with a few mouse clicks. DeskUpdate is contained on the
"Drivers & Utilities" CD.

Important notes
In this chapter you will find information regarding safety which is essential to take note of when
working with your PC.
Safety notes
!Pay attention to the information provided in the "Safety and Ergonomics" manual and in
the following safety notes.
During installation and before operating the device, please observe the instructions on
environmental conditions in the "Technical data" chapter as well as the instructions in the
"Preparing for use" chapter.
You may only operate the device, if the rated voltage for the device is set to the local
mains voltage. Check the rated voltage set for this device (see the "Preparing for use"
chapter).
The main switch and the ON/OFF switch do not disconnect the PC from the mains
voltage. To completely disconnect the mains voltage, remove the power plug from the
grounded mains outlet.
Replace the lithium battery on the mainboard in accordance with the instructions in the
"System expansions - Replacing processor" chapter.
Caution, components in the system can get very hot.

Further information can be found on the "Drivers & Utilities" CD provided with your computer.

The shipped version of this device complies with the requirements of the EEC directives
89/336/EEC "Electromagnetic compatibility" and 73/23/EEC "Low voltage directive".

Transporting the PC
!Transport all parts separately in their original packaging or in a packaging which protects
them from knocks and jolts, to the new site. Do not unpack them until all transportation
manoeuvres are completed.
Never drop the monitor (risk of implosion, risk of glass breakage)!
Cleaning the PC
!Turn off all power and equipment switches and remove the power plug from the mains
supply.
Do not clean any interior parts yourself. Leave this job to a certified service technician.
Do not use any cleaning agents that contain abrasives or may corrode plastic.
Ensure that no liquid enters the system.
In order to avoid overheating, ensure that the monitor and PC ventilation outlets are not
obstructed.
Cleaning the PC and the monitor
Wipe the PC and monitor casing with a dry cloth. If particularly dirty, use a cloth that has been
moistened in mild domestic detergent and then carefully wrung out.
Cleaning the keyboard and the mouse
Use disinfectant wipes to clean the keyboard and the mouse.
If you have a mechanical mouse, you can clean the mouse mechanism and the ball:
ÊUsing two fingers push the retaining ring and turn the ring in the direction of the arrows.
ÊRemove the retaining ring and the rotating ball.
ÊClean the ball and the three small wheels in the mouse with a lint-free cloth.
ÊReplace the ball and the retaining ring.
ÊUsing two fingers, push the retaining ring and turn the ring in the opposite direction of the
arrows. You should feel the ring engage.

Unpacking and checking the delivery
It is recommended not to throw away the original packaging material! It may be required for
reshipment at some later date.
ÊUnpack all the individual parts.
ÊCheck the delivery for damage incurred during transportation.
ÊCheck whether the delivery agrees with the details in the delivery note.
Should you discover that the delivery does not correspond to the delivery note, notify your local
sales outlet immediately.
Steps for initial setup
The software provided is configured during initial start-up.

External devices
If you have received other devices in addition to your PC (e.g. a printer or a modem), do
not connect these until after the initial installation. Connecting these external devices is
described in the section "Connecting external devices".
Drives and boards
If you have received drives or boards with your PC, please do not install them until after
first-time setup. How to install drives and boards is described in the "System expansions"
chapter.
Perform the following steps in the prescribed order:
1. Decide where you are going to use the PC, and then set it up.
2. Connect the monitor, mouse and keyboard to the PC.
3. Connect any other devices (e.g. printer, modem) to the PC.
4. Check the rated voltage of the PC and connect it to the mains voltage.
5. Switch the PC on and follow the instructions on the screen.

Setting up the PC
!When installing your PC, give consideration to the recommendations on video workstation
ergonomics in the "Safety and Ergonomics" manual.
Do not expose the PC to extreme environmental conditions (see "Technical data" chapter)
and protect it from dust, humidity and heat.
The space must be at least 200 mm in front of, at the rear and on the right of the casing in
the horizontal operating position, or in front of, at the top and at the rear of the casing in
the vertical operating position so that the device is sufficiently ventilated. Do not cover the
ventilation areas of the monitor and the casing.
The PC can be used either horizontally or vertically. We recommend that you place your equipment
on a surface with good anti-slip qualities. In view of the multitude of different finishes and varnishes
used on furniture, it is possible that the rubber / plastic feet of the devices will mark the surface they
stand on.
Vertical operating position
The vertical operating position is only permissible with the side section and the base feet (available
as an option). The side section holds the base feet securely. The base feet prevent the device from
falling over and ensure proper ventilation.
!The set-up direction is specified. The ON/OFF switch must be at the top to ensure
sufficient ventilation.
Proceed as follows to prepare the PC for the vertical operating position:
ÊIf you have already operated the PC, switch it off and disconnect all cables from the casing.
ÊOpen the casing (see "Opening the casing" chapter).
ÊCarefully turn over the casing so that the open top is facing downward.

ÊRemove the four base feet of the unit by
pushing the short side of the provided
lever under the base foot (1) and pressing
on the long end of the foot lever (2).

ÊLay the side section on the underside of
the casing so that the lugs face the front
of the unit (1). Make sure that the side
guide lugs are seated in the
corresponding guides.
ÊPush the side section in the direction of the arrow (2) until it engages in the front of the casing
and in the side guides.
ÊTurn the casing over.
ÊClose the casing (see "Opening the casing" chapter).
ÊPlace the casing on the right side so that
the On/Off switch is at the bottom.
ÊMount the base feet.
The locking lugs of the base feet must
engage in the holes of the side section.
ÊPlace the unit on the base feet and reconnect any cables disconnected previously.

Connect the monitor, mouse and keyboard
The ports for the monitor, mouse, and keyboard are on the rear and front of the PC.
Keyboard port, purple PS/2 mouse port, green

Connecting the monitor
ÊFollow the instructions contained in the monitor manual to prepare the monitor for operation.
ÊPlug the data cable into the monitor port of the PC.
ÊConnect the data cable to the connector on the monitor.

ÊDepending on the connector supplied with your monitor, plug the monitor's power cable into
either the PC (1) or the mains supply (2).
!You may only connect a monitor with a rated current of less than 1.5 A (230 V) or 3 A
(115 V) to the PC, connect others directly to the mains supply. The rated current for the
monitor is given on the monitor itself and in the operating manual for the monitor.
Connecting the mouse
Depending on the equipment level selected, your PC will be supplied with a PS/2 mouse or a USB
mouse.
Connecting a PS/2 mouse
ÊConnect the PS/2 mouse to the PS/2 mouse port of the PC.
Connecting USB mouse
ÊConnect the USB mouse to the USB port of the PC.

If you do not attach a mouse at the PS/2 mouse port, you can disable the mouse
controller in the BIOS Setup in order to free the IRQ12 for a different application.
Connecting a keyboard
Depending on the equipment level selected, your PC will be supplied with a standard keyboard or a
USB keyboard.
Connecting standard keyboard
Use the supplied keyboard cable only.
ÊPlug the rectangular connector of the keyboard cable into the rectangular socket on the
underside or on the rear of the keyboard.
ÊPlug the round plug of the keyboard cable into the keyboard port of the PC.
Connecting USB keyboard
Use the supplied keyboard cable only.
ÊPlug the rectangular connector of the keyboard cable into the rectangular socket on the
underside or on the rear of the keyboard.
ÊInsert the flat rectangular USB plug of the keyboard cable into the USB port of the PC.

ÊCheck the voltage setting.
!Devices with main power switch:
The value indicated with an arrow must be compatible with the local rated voltage:
115 = 100 V to 127 V 230 = 200 V to 240 V
If the voltage setting is incorrect, then lift out the manual voltage adjuster with a
screwdriver (1), turn it to the required setting and reinsert it.
Devices without main power switch:
The visible value must agree with the local mains voltage:
115 = 100 V to 127 V 230 = 200 V to 240 V
If an incorrect mains voltage is set, push the slide switch all the way into the other
possible position with a pointed object.
