Introduction
Futronic FS28 Bluetooth Fingerprint Scanner combines high performance optical fingerprint
scanner and Bluetooth engine into one device. Under the control of any Bluetooth enable host
device, it can capture fingerprint on-the-spot any time and transfer it to the host device via
Bluetooth interface. This enables user to capture fingerprint easily with a mobile device such as
smart phone or tablet PC in which Bluetooth is almost a standard interface, then transfer it to a
remoteAutomated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) via mobile network.
FS28 was certified by FBI to be compliant with PIV-071006 Image Quality Specification for
Single Finger Reader. So it meets the US Federal Information Processing Standard 201(FIPS 201)
for Personal Identification Verification (PIV) of Federal Employees and Contractors.
FS28 can also work independently as a portable fingerprint matcher. The matching result will be
show on the LCD. FS28 can also store 1000 fingerprint templates as well as 100,000 matching
records. It can be used as attendance checker for field workers in remote locations.

Operation Modes:
There are four Operation Modes in FS28 includes Bluetooth Master Mode, Bluetooth Slave Mode,
USB Mode and Local Mode.
Bluetooth Master Mode: This is used for transfer fingerprint data to a host (eg. smart phone or PC)
through Bluetooth. There are three types of fingerprint data can be selected includes RAW image,
WSQ image and fingerprint sample.
Bluetooth Slave Mode: When Bluetooth connection is built up, FS28 will not do anything until it
receive an instruction from the host.A host can send a command to control FS28 to capture image,
get log, download / upload user template, etc…
USB Mode: This is used for configuring FS28 with PC software. FS28 should connect to PC
through USB cable. User data and logs can be sent to or got from PC. Other function include
synchronize date time, fingerprint scanner testing and scanner firmware upgrade
Local Mode: In this mode, FS28 is working as a stand along fingerprint scanner. It can do
fingerprint identification locally. You can store maximum 1000 fingerprint templates to FS28’s local
database.

FS28 working in Bluetooth Master Mode.
When FS28 working in Bluetooth Master Mode, it can transfer fingerprint data to a host (eg. smart
phone or PC) through Bluetooth. To select Bluetooth Master Mode, just enter FS28 admin menu, go
to 1.<Operating Mode> - > 1.BT Master Mode (Bluetooth master mode).
After selecting Bluetooth master mode, the Home menu will be upgraded as below:
There are three types of fingerprint data can be selected includes RAW image, WSQ image and
fingerprint sample.
RAW Image:
The RAW size is 153600 bytes. The host demo will show the image immediately after finish
receiving it.
WSQ Image:
WSQ does not have a fixed image size. When an image is captured in FS28, it will be first
compressed into WSQ image and then sent to the host. After the host receiving it, it will be
decompressed back to RAW image and show it on the screen. As WSQ is a compressed image, so it
can be transferred faster than that of transferring RAW image.
Fingerprint Sample.
FS28 can send a fingerprint sample to host through Bluettooth. FS28 will first process the captured
image into a FS28 sample (664 bytes) and then send it to the host. After receiving the FS28 sample,
the host demo will convert it into a host sample (669 bytes) to make it compatible with Futronic’s
proprietary SDK.
In Windows Bluetooth Master Mode Demo application, Futronic’s trial SDK is provided. To enroll
a user finger into PC database, you should use a USB scanner like Futronic’s FS80 or FS88. Just
plug in a USB scanner and run the SDK demo “WorkedEx.NET.exe”to enroll fingers. After
enrolling a user finger into the PC database, you can use FS28 to do identification. Whenever a
sample is sent from FS28 to PC, the Windows Demo will do identification using that trial SDK.
Note:
1. The fingerprint sample is only work with Futronic’s SDK, it will not work with other SDKs.
2. Only trial SDK is provided in FS28 Starter Kit. Futronic’s Full SDK is not provided; you need
to purchase it from Futronic if you need to use it. The trial SDK has following limitations.
i. It can use for limited 1000 verification/identification only. After this limit is
exceeded, the application has to restart again.
ii. Only vc# examples are provided. For other example, it is required to purchase the
full SDK.
iii. It is an older version 3.0 and we are selling new version 3.9 with better recognition
performance

connection established. This means FS28 will not execute any task such as finger detection,
enrollment, identification until it is told by host to so.
Difference between Bluetooth Master Mode and Bluetooth Slave Mode:
It is different to Bluetooth Master Mode. In Bluetooth Master Mode, the host acts as a slave and
listens to FS28. FS28 will auto detecting finger and actively send the detected image to host once
the finger is detected. In Bluetooth Slave Mode, the host acts as a master to control FS28 to execute
task. FS28 is just listening to the host instruction to perform task. FS28 will not detect any finger or
send any image to host until the host tells it to do so.
Procedure to use FS28 Slave Mode:
