1. INTRODUCTION
This manual has been compiled to help you to operate your craft with safety and pleasure. It
contains details of the craft; the equipment supplied or fitted, its systems and information on
their operation. Please read it carefully, and familiarize yourself with the craft before using it.
This owner's manual is not a course on boating safety or seamanship. If this is your first craft,
or if you are changing to a type of craft you are not familiar with, for your own comfort and
safety, please ensure that you obtain an handling and operating experience before “assuming
command” of the craft. Your dealer or national sailing federation or yacht club will be pleased
to advise you of local sea schools, or competent instructors.
Ensure that the anticipated wind and sea conditions will correspond to the design category of
your craft, and that you and your crew are able to handle the craft in these conditions.
Even when your boat is categorized for them, the sea and wind conditions corresponding to the
design categories A, B and C range from severe storm conditions for category A, to strong
conditions for the top of category C, open to the hazards of a freak wave or gust. These are
therefore dangerous conditions, where only a competent, fit and trained crew using a well
maintained craft can satisfactorily operate.
This owner's manual is not a detailed maintenance or trouble-shooting guide. In the case of
difficulty, refer to the boat builder or his representative. If a maintenance manual is provided,
use it for the craft's maintenance.
Always use trained and competent people for maintenance, fixing or modifications.
Modifications that may affect the safety characteristics of the craft shall be assessed, executed
and documented by competent people. The boat builder cannot be held responsible for
modifications that he has not approved.
In some countries, a driving license or authorization are required, or specific regulations are in
force.
Always maintain your craft properly and make allowance for the deterioration that will occur in
time and as a result of heavy use or misuse of the craft.
Any craft, no matter how strong it may be, can be severely damaged if not used properly. This
is not compatible with safe boating. Always adjust the speed and direction of the craft to sea
conditions.
If your craft is fitted with a life raft, carefully read its operating manual. The craft should have
onboard the appropriate safety equipment (lifejackets, harness, etc.) according to the type of
craft, weather conditions, etc. This equipment is mandatory in some countries. The crew
should be familiar with the use of all safety equipment and emergency maneuvering (man
overboard recovery, towing, etc.), sailing schools and clubs regularly organize drill
sessions.
All persons should wear a suitable buoyancy aid (life jacket/personal floatation device) when
on deck. Note that, in some countries, it is a legal requirement to wear a buoyancy aid that
complies with their national regulations at all times.
KEEP THIS MANUAL IN A SECURE PLACE, AND HAND IT OVER TO THE NEW OWNER
WHEN YOU SELL THE CRAFT.

Due to the chosen commissioning version, the information supplied may be incomplete. Don’t
hesitate to contact the yard for further precision.
In the same way, this manual doesn't deal with optional extras, which you may have fitted to
your yacht. We invite you to refer to the instructions for use supplied with the equipment.

2. BOAT DESIGN CATEGORY
The boats marked "CE" are classified into four categories according to their ability to sail in sea
conditions characterized by wind speed and wave height. Depending on the type of navigation
performed, a boater must choose a boat with a design category that allows such practice.
Your Garcia Exploration 45 falls into the category of design OPEN OCEAN (Class A): Vessels
designed for extended voyages where conditions may exceed wind force 8 (on the Beaufort
scale) and the waves may exceed a height of four meters for which these boats are self-
sufficient.

This ability to sail also depends on the competency of the crew, their physical capabilities, the
maintenance of the boat and the commissioning.
The Garcia Yachting yard cannot guarantee the perfect running of the vessel in exceptional sea
conditions (violent storm, hurricane, cyclone, waterspout...)
Be vigilant prior to taking to sea
Take to the seas without taking risks. Consult the weather forecast prior to taking to sea.
In port: the Harbour Master’s Office displays weather information everyday as well as the
forecasts for the following days.

-Navifax - direct on +33 (0)8.36.70.18.52.
-VHF: the CROSS (French Coastguard) broadcasts several flashes per day, after
notification on Channel 16.
The Garcia Yachting yard has selected the IMCI (International Marine Certification Institute) as
the notified body to check the conformity of your boat to the CE 94/25 European Directive, in
the framework of the module B and G design category.

WARNING
Do not exceed the maximum number of people recommended. Regardless of the
number of people on board, the total mass of persons and equipment must not exceed
the maximum recommended load. Report to the builder plate in the cockpit.
The maximum recommended load includes:
othe mass of all persons on board, supplies and personal effects, all equipment
not included in the lightship weight of the boat.
othe total mass of liquid when all tanks are full.
When loading the boat, never exceed the maximum recommended load. Always load the
boat carefully and allocate weights appropriately to preserve the theoretical waterline
(approximately horizontal). Avoid placing heavy loads in upper position.

4. ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS
4.1. Instructions for safety and use of the electrical system
DANGER
Never touch with your hand the isoled part of the backstay, if SSB is installed onboard (option).
PRECAUTION
Always:
Check the state of the batteries and the charge system prior to taking to sea.
Disconnect and unload the batteries for wintering.
Maintain the voltage of the batteries above 10.5V over the winter.
Carry spare bulbs for all the navigation lights and the interior lighting. Ensure correct
wattage particularly with the navigation lights.
Check the sailing apparatus is in working order.
Check the navigation lights are in working order prior to night sailing
Never:
Work on a live electrical installation.
Work on electrical installation without protected tools
Modify an installation and the relevant plans, unless this is carried out by an electrician
qualified in marine electricity.
Change or modify the breaking capacity of the protection apparatus against the current
overload.
Replace the apparatus or the electrical gear with components exceeding the prescribed
capacity without recalibrating the conductors and their protection.
Leave the vessel unsupervised when the electrical installation is live, possibly with the
exception of an automatic bilge pump and some protection circuits against fire or theft.
If a fuse or circuit breaker keeps blowing, you must call out a specialist in order to determine
the source of the short-circuit.
Refer to the wiring diagrams supplied with the boat's documents to identify circuits and locate
sources / protection / switches. These schemes also provide a description of the electrical
panels. They mention the location and capacity of fuses installed by the yard. Information
relating to internal fuses to equipment (VHF, autopilot, heating,...) are provided by the
manuals for this equipment.

PRECAUTION
When you leave the boat:
Open the batteries switches for services and engine. It prevents from starting the
engine and from residual consumption that will empty out batteries in a few months.
Switch off all equipment that have their own circuit breaker (Electroscan, watermaker, …
Switch off the 220V equipment (boiler, 220V circuit, …)
Be sure that the charger is switched off.

4.2. Phasing in of new equipment
Since 1st January 1996, electrical equipment has been subject to the European directive
"Electromagnetic compatibility" (Ref 89/336/CEE). Therefore it is necessary when installing
new equipment that it meets this standard and bears the CE marking. The apparatus must also
be delivered with a certificate of conformity and instructions for use.
Only use electrical apparatus with double insulation for a 220V installation. During the
positioning of this apparatus, respect the assembly instructions (section on wiring, protection).
To avoid problems with maintenance, add potential modifications to the electrical plan.
PRECAUTION
Your boat is equipped with an electrical leak test system. You have to regularly test that
there is no leak, especially if the electrical layout has been modified. When you test, the
two green LEDs must light on. If not, there is a leak and you must ask to an electrician
to check the electrical installation.
To plug new equipment on the 12V terminal, use a flat screwdriver 0.5x3x100mm to
operate the springs of the terminal components.

4.3. Batteries
The service batteries are located under the floor at the bottom of the companionway (port and
starboard –forming one battery set. The engine battery is placed at the bottom of the
companionway to port. Windlass and bow thruster battery (option) is under the forward cabin
berth.
The engine and service battery cut-off switches are placed in the technical locker to starboard,
behind the stairs. The windlass/bow thruster/capstan battery cut off switch is controlled
remotely from the electrical table at the foot of the stairs to starboard.

The capacity of the batteries has been optimized to meet the energy needs of the onboard
accessories. To avoid any problems, it is necessary to take care that the batteries are well
charged and well maintained.

Depending on your selected options, your boat can be installed with a battery monitor. If your
boat is equipped with a battery monitor, the batteries are named:
-Battery I: batteries for services.
-Battery II: engine battery
-Battery III: batteries for bow thruster/windlass/capstan
The batteries manager is a permanent consumer. Also, if your boat is not equipped with solar
panels, the battery manager is connected downstream of batteries switches, so that the
batteries manager is isolated when you switch off the service battery switch. It is then
necessary to periodically resynchronize the batteries manager after a full charge of batteries,
to ensure the accuracy of the capacity information provided by the batteries manager. If your
boat is equipped with solar panels, the batteries manager is connected upstream of batteries
switches and operates continuously even when the service batteries switch is switched off.
Then it is not necessary to resynchronize.
4.4. Windlass and/or electric capstan and/or bow thruster
The windlass is protected by a thermal breaker reset at the top of the chain locker in the
forward bathroom.
The capstan (option) is protected by a thermal breaker reset situated in the sail locker.
The bow thruster is protected by a fuse situated under the berth in the forward cabin with the
battery and circuit breaker command.
WARNING
When you install new electrical apparatus, watch that the global consumption of this
apparatus continues to relate to the capacity of your batteries.
When using heavy consuming equipment (kettle, coffee maker) via the converter, make
sure that the electrical current coming from the 12V batteries doesn’t exceed 250A.
If batteries are discharged more than 50%, they can be damaged.
Always unplug the terminal –from the battery before the + terminal
Never put the two terminals in contact with a battery by means of conductive objects
(tools, etc…)
Whilst handling batteries, avoid any leaking of electrolyte liquid by keeping them in a
horizontal position.
Wear appropriate gloves and clothing to avoid any risk of contact with the electrolyte
liquid in the event of leakage.
In the event of electrolyte splashes, rinse the part of the body that has come into
contact with it thoroughly with freshwater and consult a doctor.

WARNING
When you use the electric windlass, it is imperative to run your engine at a slightly
accelerated pace.
At anchor, the stresses of the chain must be taken up on the forward cleats. The chain
must never exert tension directly on the windlass.
When the anchor is lifted, be sure that the anchor is in the correct position according to
the davit shape.
The windlass is protected by a thermal resetting circuit breaker via a lever situated in the sail
locker.
4.5. 220 Volt Installation
220V box in the aft technical locker in the aft
starboard cabin
The 220V circuit feeds the boiler.
The 220V supply to the water heater and the circuit of 220V plugs is taken from the batteries
and charger. Depending on the options, additional 220V equipment can be added (washing
machine, …) Each piece of 220V equipment is protected by a circuit breaker at the main
switchboard or at the charger
ATTENTION: When using 220V on board, it is essential to monitor consumption and charge of
the batteries
Optional, the 220V circuit is divided to a main circuit and an alternative circuit to avoid
accidental used of the converter when the boat is not connected to shore power.
Optional and depending on charger and inverter model, when the boat is moored the 220V
circuit can be fed directly by 220V shore power without passing through the converter.
DANGER
The onboard 220V installation is protected by a circuit breaker and equipped with a differential
block. The wiring of additional onboard accessories with 220V must be carried out by
professionals with recalibrating of the general circuit breaker.

WARNING
You should follow the following steps to avoid electric shock or fire:
Never work on live electrical power.
Never leave the shore-to-boat power cable hanging in the water.
Do not change the connections of shore-to-boat power cable, use only compatible
connections.
Do not modify the electrical system of the boat or relevant drawings. Installation, or
modifications and maintenance should be performed by a qualified marine electrician.
Check the system at least twice a year.
Turn off the boat supply when the system is not used. This is to prevent fire hazards.
4.6. Charge by the engine alternator
The Volvo engine alternator (115A in theory - 80A in practice) charges with constant voltage
(14.4V) and regulates the strength according to the internal batteries resistance. The batteries
with the lead/calcium technology can support a strength –when the alternator starts –of
about 10% of their capacity if the batteries are 50% discharged. The strength of charge
quickly reduces.
Optional, an alternator booster monitoring the charge cycle more effectively, especially at the
beginning of the charge to reduce the time necessary to recharge the batteries.
4.7. Electric charger
If your boat is equipped with an inverter (optional), be sure that- when you leave your boat -
the charger is on the offmode (risk of discharge of batteries if the shore power is not
permanent).

Stay clear from switching on heavy consuming 220V equipment (coffee maker, …) when you
are sailing with the autopilot on : strong current in batteries can create an electromagnetic
field and interfere with the compass and change the trajectory of the boat under autopilot.
Optional, the boat can be equipped with a battery charger working with 110V or 220V. Refer to
the charger manual to configure the function depending on the connected source.
4.8. Generator
If your boat is equipped with a generator (optional), do not leave the generator on when you
are sailing with the autopilot on: strong current in batteries when the generator starts can
create an electromagnetic field, interfere with the compass information and change the
trajectory of the boat under autopilot.
The automatic mode of the generator is planned to start when the service batteries are 50% of
their capacity and to stop when the capacity reaches 80%.
Do not leave the generator in the auto mode when there is not enough water under the hull
(risk of aspiration of algae).
4.9. Hydrogenerator
The hydrogenerator (optional) recharges the Service battery set and Motor via a
regulator/distributor situated in the aft locker.

WARNING
The warning about the risks of fire or explosion of the engine also apply to the generator :
Ensure water flow through the engine
Prevent deterioration of the fuel line
Avoid contact with flammable materials and hot engine parts

4.12. Electric winches
The electric winches (optional) are each protected by a circuit breaker in the technical area.
The emergency stop (optional) on the port and starboard cockpit coamings allow stopping in
an emergency. These emergency stop points are installed so that one point will stop both
winches.
5. GASINSTALLATION
WARNING
The fuel burning appliances consume oxygen in the cabin and emit combustion products
into the boat. Good ventilation is required when these devices are used. According to
regulation ISO 10239 open access door and hatch above gas stove when the units
operate. Never block ventilation openings and check that the flue appliances are
working properly.
Take every precaution to avoid contact with open flame or other hot areas.

5.1. Instructions for use
WARNING
Read the notices of use for the stove and the valve unit carefully.
Ensure that the gas bottle and the valve unit fully conform to the recommendations for
the stove (Output, pressure, gas type).
Ensure the gas bottle conforms to the ruling in force in the country of use.
Do not obstruct the ease of access to the gas installation (bottle locker, stopcock).
The gas bottle must always be stored in its housing.
The gas bottle connected to the gas circuit must be in a vertical position.
Never leave the vessel unsupervised when the gas devices are in use.
Close off all the taps on the circuit when the boat isn't being used (stopcock on the
stove, valve unit), even when the bottle is considered to be empty.
Never smoke when going down below if this is closed off and ensure there is no smell of
gas.
If you smell gas, close off the circuit taps and those of the stove, ventilate the boat.
Detect the leak prior to using again.
The circuit stopcocks must immediately be closed in an emergency.
Despite the gimbal system of the stove, do not leave cooking utensils on the stove if the
heeling of the boat may exceed 30 °
The gas circuit is installed and tested with PROPANE gas. Before changing this
configuration talk with a professional to ensure the reliability of the new configuration.
Your boat can be equipped with an electric gas shut off valve situated in the gas locker
(optional) to port of the transom and controlled from the push button on the kitchen aft of the
cooker (see photos below)

5.2. Checking the circuit
WARNING
The gas circuit must be tested periodically:
1- Close all the taps in the gas stove
2- Open the stove’s supply tap and valve unit
3- Check the water tightness of all the joins by means of a leak detection device or by
applying soapy water
DANGER
Never use a flame or ammonia solution to search for leaks.
Repairs and modifications to the circuit must be carried out by a competent person.
Flexible tubing must be:
Regularly tested, at least once a year,
Replaced if the date limit inscribed on the tube has passed,
Replaced five years after the manufacture date of the tube, which may be marked on it,
Replaced in the event of deterioration.
5.3. Changing gas bottle
Your boat is equipped with a gas bottle of propane (external use only, to -44°C) suitable with
weather conditions of temperate areas. In certain hot weather areas, you can choose to use a
gas bottle of butane (external and internal use, to 0°C). The change of type of gas doesn’t
require modification to the installation, only a adjustment or change of the burners in certain
