APPLICATIONS
StoredGasesinConfinedSpaces.Industrialuseofstoredorpipedgasescreatesthepossibilitythat
oxygeninbreathableaircouldbedisplacedbygasessuchasnitrogen,helium,argonorcarbondioxide
resultinginahazardouscondition.
Underground Tunnels, Caves or Mines. Over time oxygen can be displaced by other naturally
occurringgaseslikecarbondioxide,carbonmonoxide,ammonia,methane and the oxidation of
sulfidesresultinginloweroxygenlevelsthanisrequiredforpersonalsafety.
CombustioninConfinedSpaces.Combustionfirstusesuptheavailableoxygen,thenproducespartial
oxidationofcarbon(carbonmonoxide),hydrogencyanide,andnitrogenoxides.Hydrogengascan
alsobeproducedanddisplaceoxygen.
Pleasetakeamomenttoreadtheseinstructionsbeforeuse.Theywillprovideyouwithallthe
necessaryinformationforthecorrectuseofyouroxygenmonitor.

TheSAN‐20PersonalSafetyO2Monitordeterminestheconcentrationofoxygeninairsamplesusingthe
principleoffluorescencequenchingbyoxygen.Airreachesthesensorbydiffusingthroughtheopenings
oftheunit.Normalairmovementisenoughto carrythe sample tothesensor.Ithas negligible cross
sensitivitytoothergases.Themonitorbenefitsfromlowpoweroperationwhileprovidingamuchlonger
lifetimeduetothenon‐depletingsensingprinciple.

OPERATION
Note:LCDBacklightwillturnoffautomaticallyafter5secondsofinactivity.WhenLCDbacklightisoff,
presseitherbuttontoturnonthebacklight.Itwillnotturnthemonitorofforchangethe°C/°Fsetting.
1.Powerbutton
a. WhentheMonitoristurnedoff,press toturnontheunit.
b. WhentheMonitoristurnedon,press for3secondstoturnofftheunit.
Whentheunitisfirstturned on, it performs5secondscountdownforMonitorwarmup,thenenters
normaldisplaywithcurrentO2,temperature,andhumidityreadingsdisplayed.Themonitorstartstaking
measurementswhenpoweronandupdatesreadingsevery2seconds.Thedevicecan’tshutoffthealarm,
ifpoweroffwillcomebackinalarmmodeandmustdelay.
2.TemperatureUnitsSwitchingButton
Press shortlytoswitchtwotemperatureunits:°Fand°C.
3.MenuandConfigurationStatus
Bypressingthetemperatureunitswitchingbutton for5seconds,theunitentersintoMenustatus.
There are three menu items by pressing the temperature unit switching button shortly to loop
switchingbetweenAIR,AON/AOFFandE(exit).
Themenuitemsaredescribedinthefollowingtable.

AIR “AIR”meansAmbientAirCalibration.Userpressesthepowerbutton to
implementAmbientAirCalibration(20.90%).
AON/AOFF
SettingMandownalarmfunctionon/off.Userpressesthepowerbutton
toswitch“AON”(allowingMandownalarm)or“AOFF”(prohibitingMan
downalarm).
E Userpressesthepowerbutton toexitthemenustatus.

4.Calibration
ThereisonecalibrationmethodforAmbientAirCalibration(20.90%).
Bypressingthetemperatureunitbutton for5seconds,themonitorwillenterO2calibrationmode.
While in calibration mode, press the temperature button quickly to switch to AIR (Ambient Air
Calibration).Pressthepowerbutton toconfirm.
5.AlarmThreshold
TheSAN‐20isequippedwithaudible,visualandvibrationalarmstoalertyouwhentheambientoxygen
concentrationexceedseitherofthetwofactorypresetalarmlevels:
DangerLowOxygenAlarm:19.5%‐LEDwillflashandaudiblealarmwillsound3x/sec.
WarningHighOxygenAlarm:23.5%‐LEDwillflashandaudiblealarmwillsound2x/sec.
Toalertusersinnoiseenvironment,aninnervibratorwillvibrateat1HzinbothOxygenAlarm.
Normal atmosphere contains between 20.8%and 21% oxygen. OSHA defines any atmosphere that
containslessthan19.5%oxygenas“oxygendeficient”andanyatmospherethatcontainsmorethan23.5
percentoxygenas“oxygenenriched.”Theselevelsarefactorysetandcannotbechanged.
ATTENTION! ‐ IF A WARNING OR DANGER ALARM IS
TRIGGEREDWHILEUSINGTHEINSTRUMENTASASAFETY
MONITOR LEAVE THE AREA AND SEEK FRESH AIR
IMMEDIATELY. REMAINING ON SITE UNDER SUCH
CIRCUMSTANCESCANCAUSESERIOUSIMPAIRMENTOR
EVENLEADTODEATH.
6.AutomaticAtmosphericPressureCompensation
TheO2measurementisaffectedbyatmosphericpressureoraltitudechanging.Whenusersareathigh
altitude,compensationshouldbemadetoassuremaximummonitoraccuracy.
ThisdevicehasautomaticatmosphericpressurecompensationforO2concentrationsbymeansofabuilt‐
inbarometricpressuresensor.

7.Mandownalarm
Fallingbybreathingdangerousgasescancauseseriousinjuryandevenfatalitytoworkers.IftheMan
downalarmfunctioninSAN‐20isseton,SAN‐20candetectfallsandsendamandownalertwhichwill
activatetheaudibleandvisualalarmsandalertotherpeopleinthearea.
Theman‐downdetectionusesathree‐axisaccelerometertoautomaticallymonitortheuser’smovements
inordertoidentifyasuddenfall/impactandalackofmovementforaperiodof6seconds.
Oncealert,peoplecanturnoffthecurrentman‐downalarmbypressinganyoneofthetwobuttons.
7.ResetButton
Userscanresettheunitbypushingaresetbuttonthroughaholeonbackofshell.
MAINTENANCE
Calibration
TheSAN‐20comespre‐calibratedfromthefactory.However,theO2sensorshouldbecalibratedatleast
onceayear,orasdescribedinyourcompany’ssafetyprocedures.Youcanperformthecalibrationyourself,
oryoucanreturnittoCO2Meterforfactorycalibrationatanominalfee.
Thetemperatureandhumiditysensorsdonotrequirecalibrationandshouldremainaccurateforthelife
ofyourunit.
CleaningandStorage
Applysparinglywithasoftclothandallowtodrycompletelybeforeusing.DonotusesoaporAlcohol
cleaning.Donotusearomatichydrocarbonsorchlorinatedsolventsforcleaning.
