Operation
IfyouwanttousetheSTEREOCHORUSrightaway,followthe
instructionsinthischapter.However,westronglyrecommend
thatyoureadtherestofthemanualimmediatelytofully
understandandusethecapabilitiesofthissophisticated
signalprocessor.
1.makesurethatthepowertotheamplifierorotherdevice
towhichyouareconnectingisturnedoffbeforeconnecting
theSTEREOCHORUS.
Note:UsetherecommendedACadapter.
Usealkalinebatteries,theoperatingtimeisapproximately2
hours.
ConnecttheOUTjacksoftheSTEREOCHORUStotwo
channelsofastereoamplifierormixer,ortotwoguitar
amplifierswiththeirrespectivecables.Ifyouneedamono
output,connectonlytheLEFTOUT(MONO)outputjackto
thesoundsystemwithasinglecable.3.
SetthePREAMPLEVELtozeroandsettheDEEPCHORUS
knobtotheOFFposition.Ifusingmono,settheDIRECT
MIXERmixertotheNORMALorEQUALposition.4.
ConnectaguitarorkeyboardoutputtotheINPUTjack.Ifyou
areusingaGENERATOR,connectitsoutputtotheSTEREO
CHORUSINPUT(MONO).5.
TheSTEREOCHORUShasanamplificationlevelof1,which
meansthattheinputsignallevelisthesameastheoutput
level,sosetthesoundsystemvolumetothesamelevelas
whentheSTEREOCHORUSisnotinuse.6.

FunctionDescription
Preamp/Level(PREAMP/LEVEL)
ThePREAMPLEVELcontrollerisusedtoadjustthelevelof
theincomingaudiosignaltotheinternalgainoftheSTEREO
CHORUS.Settingittothebestpositionwillminimizeboth
distortionandnoise.Theoutputleveldoesnotchangeatany
position.
TheHEADROOMLEDindicatesthelevelofthesignalpassing
throughtheinternalcircuitry.TheredLEDindicatesthatthe
levelisapproachingthedistortionpointandshouldnotbelit
toooften.IftheredLEDlightsfrequently,turndownthe
PREAMPLEVELcontrolleronestep.TheyellowLEDindicates
thebestsignallevelwiththeleastnoise.IftheyellowLED
doesnotlightupatall,turnupthePREAMPLEVELcontroller
onestep.
Fornormalline-levelsignals,0isgenerallythebestposition.If
youareconnectingaguitardirectly,setittothe+6position.
Ifyouareconnectingagenerator,setthePREAMPLEVEL
controllerto-6.Ineithercase,watchtheLEDsandtogglethe
switchestofindthebestoperatingpoint.
Note:Ifdistortionisfeltevenatthe-6position,turndownthe
level(output)oftheeffectsystemusedinthepreviousstage.
CHORUS
Thecenterdelaytimecanbeinfinitelyvariedfrom20ms
(normal)to40ms(long)withtheDEEPCHORUS.Thesweep
oscillatorvariesthisdelayintwoways,from20to24
millisecondsorfrom40to44milliseconds.Thenormal
chorusdelaytimeisjustlongenoughtocreateatruestereo
image,butthelongerchorusdelaycreatesastrongereffect,
givingtheimpressionthatthetwosourcesareindependent.
TheSWEEPSPEEDcontrollercontrolsalow-frequency
oscillator(LFO)forvaryingthetimedelay.Thefrequencyof
thissweeposcillatorcanbesetfrom1Hzto0.25Hz(from
onecyclepersecondtoonecycleeveryfourseconds),and
thespeedisindicatedbyablinkingSWEEPSPEEDLED.The
slowerthespeed,thesmallerthephasingeffect,butthe
fasterthespeed,thestrongerthevibrato-likerhythmiceffect
andthelargerthepitchchange.Thenatureofthechorus
effectisalsogreatlyaffectedbytheoutputswitchsetting.

UsetheMIXERswitchtopresettheratioofdirecttoeffect
mix.
HowdoIgetaprocesssignalonly?
SettheMIXERswitchtoWIDE(STEREO)anduseonlythe
RIGHTOUT.Ifyouwanttousethissignal,youwillneedan
externalmixerorotherequipment.
Note:TheMIXERcircuitisdesignedsothattheapparent
volumeisthesameatallswitchpositions;intheWIDE
(STEREO)position,theinputandoutputsignallevelsarethe
same(gain1),butwhensettomono,theoutputmayhave
peaksthatarehigherthantheinputsignal.Ifthesignalclips
whileinthemonopositionandthered"CLIP"HEADROOM
LEDlightsup,setthePREAMPLEVELcontrollerloweror
reducetheinputsignallevelifnecessary.
Notethatevenwhentheeffectisoff,theaudiosignalwillstill
passthroughthelow-noisebuffercircuitandmustbe
energizedortherewillbenosound.
Theapparentvolumedoesnotchangewhenswitchingfrom
chorustobypass.The3dBapparentvolumeincreasethat
normallyoccurswhenthechorussignalisreplacedwitha
directsignalinthemixisautomaticallycompensatedfor.

position(1/2Hz).Fordistortedguitarsounds,increasethe
sweepspeedtodeepentheeffectevenmore.Youcanalso
useDEEPCHORUStoextendthespatialpresence.

PrincipleofOperation
Thepurposeofachorusistomakeasingleinstrumentsound
liketwoormoreinstrumentswithwell-definedpitchand
timing.Justasastringsectioncanbemadetosoundricher
andmorebeautifulthanasingleviolinwithitsfinelytuned
pitchandtiming,aguitarorkeyboardcanbemadetosound
morelifelikebyapplyingachorus.
Thechorusworksbysplittingtheinstrument'ssoundintotwo
differentsignals.TheSWEEPoscillatoraffectstheamountof
timedelay,whichdeterminesthedepthofthechorus.The
shorterthedelay,thehigherthepitchofthesignal;thelonger
thedelay,thelowerthepitch.AndthefastertheSWEEP
oscillatorbehaves,thefasterthedelaylengthensorshortens,
andthegreaterthepitchshift.
