GENERALINFORMATION
UNITLOCATION
Thisunitisapprovedonlyforanoutdoorinstallation.Seetheinstalla-
tioninstructionsfortherequiredclearancestotheunit.Itisimportant
thatsafetymeasuresaretakeninthesurroundingareaoftheunit.
Guttersordeflectorsmustbeinstalledontherooftopreventwater
fromsheddingontheunit.
1.Anareamustbeavailabletoreachtheunitina clearandunob-
structedpath.
2.Theunitareaandthevicinityofanyothergasappliancesmust
bekeptclearandfreeofcombustiblematerials,gasoline,and
otherflammablevaporsandliquids.Also,donotstoreoruse
flammableitemssuchaspaint,varnish,orlacquerinthearea.
3.Thecombustionairsupplymustnotbecontaminatedbyprod-
uctscontainingchlorineorfluorine,astheycouldcorrodethe
heatexchanger.Ifyouneedfurtherinformationonthissubject,
contactyourinstallingdealeroranotherqualifiedservicer.
4.Familiarizeyourselfwiththecontrolsthatturnoffthegasand
electricalpowertotheunit.
5.Establisha regularserviceandmaintenancescheduletoensure
efficientandsafeoperationoftheunit.
6.Theunitmustbeplacedwherenorunoffwaterfromhigherground
cancollectintheunit.
UNITINSTALLATION
Examinetheunitinstallationtodeterminethefollowing:
1.Thefluehoodconnectorisinplaceandisphysicallysoundwith-
outholesorexcessivecorrosion.
2.Themountingpadsupportoftheunitissound.
3.Therearenoobvioussignsofdeteriorationoftheunit.
4.Theburnerflamesarestable,softandblue,(dustmaycause
orangetipsbutmustnotbeyellow).Theflamesshouldextend
directlyoutwardfromtheburnerwithoutcurling,floating,orlifting
off.Toexamine,turnontheelectricalpowerandgas.Setthe
roomtemperaturetothemaximumsetting.

NOTE:Ifa strongwindisblowing,itmaynotbepossibletoperform
theflameinspection.

AIRREQUIREMENTS
TOAVOIDPROPERTYDAMAGE,PERSONALINJURYORDEATH,SUFFICIENT

OFFLUEGASES.
Sincethegas/electricunitisinstalledcompletelyintheoutdoors,the
depletionofcombustionairishighlyimprobable.Toensureanadequate
supplyofcombustionair,donotallowtheairinletlouversinthe
condensercoilsectionorthefluehoodoutlettobecomeblockedby
leaves,snow,rubbish,orinsect(wasps)nests.Neverblockthecon-
densingunitsectioninthewinterwithcovers.Blockingofthissection
wouldpreventanadequateamountofcombustionairfromreachingthe
furnacesection.
Greatcarehasbeentakeninthedesignandmanufactureofyourunitto
provideforyourcomfortandsafety.Beawareofthepossibilitythatsome
problemswithyourunitorothergas-firedappliancescouldcauseflue
gasestobepresentinyourbuilding.Thesefluegasescouldinclude
carbonmonoxide.
CARBONMONOXIDEPOISONINGHAZARD
SpecialWarningforInstallationofFurnaceorAirHandlingUnitsin
EnclosedAreassuchasGarages,UtilityRoomsorParkingAreas
Carbonmonoxideproducingdevices(suchasanautomobile,space
heater,gaswaterheater,etc.)shouldnotbeoperatedinenclosedareas
suchasunvenlilatedgarages,utilityroomsorparkingareasbecauseof
thedangerofcarbonmonoxide(CO)poisoningresultingfromtheexhaust
emissions.Ifa furnaceorairhandlerIsInstalledInanenclosedareasuch
asagarage,utilityroomorparkingareaanda carbonmonoxideproducing
deviceisoperatedtherein,theremustbeadequate,directoutside
ventilation.
ThisventilationisnecessarytoavoidthedangerofCOpoisoningwhich
canoccurifa carbonmonoxideproducingdevicecontinuestooperateIn

THERMOSTAT
Thisunitwillnotoperateproperlywithouta goodquality,correctly
installedthermostat.Itisveryimportantthatthethermostatbe
locatedwhereitcanbest"sense"theaverageroomtemperature.
Besurethethermostatisnotexposedtohotorcolddraftsortohot
orcoldspotsonthewall,suchasthosereceivedfromoutside
walls,wallswithpipesinside,orfromopeningsintotheattic.
Nomatterthetypeorstyle,thermostatoperationisbasicallythe
same.Themostwidelyusedtypeswillcontrolbothheatingand
coolingfunctionsandwillhavea FanSwitchwithAutoandON
settings.OnAuto,theCirculatingAirBlowerwillcycleon/off,but
ifswitchedtoONitwillrunconstantly.
IMPORTANTNOTE:Toavoidthepossibilityofdamagetotheunit
heatexchanger,donotsetthethermostatfanswitchtoON
(constantfanoperation)duringtheheatingseasonwithoutfirst
consultingtheinstalleroftheunitoranotherqualifiedservicer.
TherearethermostatsthatautomaticallyswitchfromHeatingto
Cooling,orwithnightsetbacks.Thenightsetback,ormultiple

1.Closetheexternalmanualgasshutoffvalve.
2.Turnofftheelectricalpowertotheunit.
3.Settheroomthermostattothelowestpossiblesetting.
4.Removetheheatexchangerdooronthesideoftheunitby
removingscrews.
5.Thisunitisequippedwithanignitiondevicewhichautomati-
callylightstheburner.Donottrytolighttheburnerbyhand.
6.MovethegascontrolswitchtotheOFFposition.Donotuse
excessiveforce.
7.Waitfiveminutestoclearoutanygas.Thensmellforgas,
includingnearthefloorassometypesofgasareheavierthan
air.
8.Ifyousmellgasfollowingthefiveminutewaitingperiodinstep
7,immediatelyfollowtheinstructionsonthecoverofthismanual.
Ifyoudonotsmellgasafterfiveminutes,moveorrotatethe
gascontrolswitchtotheONposition.Theswitchshouldturn
easily.Donotuseexcessiveforce.
9.Reinstalltheburnercompartmentdoor.
10.Opentheexternalmanualgasshutoffvalve.
11.Turnontheelectricalpowertotheunit.
12.Adjustthethermostattoa settingaboveroomtemperature.
13.Aftertheburnersarelit,setthethermostattodesiredtemperature.
HEATINGSHUTDOWN
Toshutdownoperation,followthestepslistedbelow.
1.Setthethermostattothelowestsetting.
2.TurnOFFelectricalpowertotheunit.
3.Removetheheatexchangerdooronthesideoftheunitbyremoving
screws.
4.MovethegascontrolswitchtotheOFFposition.Donotuseexces-
siveforce.
5.Closetheexternalmanualgasshutoffvalve.
6.Reinstalltheheatexchangerdoor.
7.Ifcoolingand/oraircirculationisdesired,turnONtheelectricalpower.
COOLINGOPERATION
Coolingoperationmaybeobtainedasfollows:
1.PlacetheroomthermostatselectorswitchintheCOOLposition{or
AUTO,ifavailable,andifautomaticchangeoverfromcoolingtoheat-
ingisdesired).
2.Settheroomthermostattothedesiredtemperature.
3.Ifcoolingsystemdoesnotenergize,waitfiveminutes.Thesystem
startupmaybedelayedbytheshort-cycleprotectorfeatureofthe
ignitioncontrolboard.Checkthemanualresetdevicesontherollout
limit,asdescribedinthismanual.
SAFETYCIRCUITS
Anumberofsafetycircuitsareemployedtoensuresafeandproperunit
operation.Thesecircuitsservetocontrolanypotentialsafetyhazards
and,asinputsinthemonitoringanddiagnosisofabnormaloperation.
IFTHESECONDARYLIMITCONTROLSHOULDOPEN,THEREASONMUSTBE
DETERMINEDBEFORETHECONTROLRESETS.THEELECTRICALPOWER
MUSTBEDISCONNECTEDBEFOREANYPANELISREMOVEDORMAIN-
TENANCEISPERFORMED.
SECONDARYLIMIT
Thesecondarylimitcontrolislocatedontheblowerhousingand
monitorsblowercompartmenttemperatures.Itisa normallyclosed
(electrically),automaticreset,temperatureactivatedsensor.Thislimit
guardsagainstoverheatingasa resultofinsufficientconditionedair
passingovertheheatexchanger.Itdeenergizesthegasvalveifthe
blowerfails.
NOTE:Ifthepowertotheunitisinterruptedduringtheheatingcycle,
itmaycausethesecondarylimittotrip.Oncetheblowercompartment
temperaturedropsbelowthelimitresettemperature,thelimitwill
automaticallyreset.
ROLLOUTLIMIT
THECAUSEOFTHEROLLOUTPROTECTIONDEVICEOPENINGMUSTBEINVEST-
IGATEDBYA QUALIFIEDSERVICERBEFOREANYATTEMPTISMADETORESET
THEROLLOUTPROTECTIONDEVICEANDTURNTHEUNITBACKON.THE
ELECTRICALPOWERMUSTBEDISCONNECTEDBEFOREEITHERFRONTPANEL
ISREMOVED.
Therolloutlimitisa normally-closed(electrically),manual-reset,
temperature-activatedsensor.Itismountedontheburnerbracketand
monitorstheburnerflame.Ifthereisanimproperdrawofburner
flamesintotheheatexchanger,therolloutlimitwilldetectitandshut
offgasflowingtotheburners.Contactaqualifiedservicertocheckthe
unitbeforeresettingthisdevice.

COMPRESSORPROTECTIONDEVICES
Thisgas/electricpackageunitincludescomponentswhichare
designedtoprotectthecompressoragainstabnormaloperating
conditions.
TOPREVENTPERSONALINJURYORDEATH,ALWAYSDISCONNECTTHE
ELECTRICALPOWERBEFOREINSPECTINGORSERVICINGTHEUNIT.SlNCE
ALLOFTHECOMPRESSORPROTECTIONDEVICESRESETAUTOMATICALLY.
THECONTACTORANDOUTDOORFANMAY BEENERGIZEDWHENRESET.
NOTE:Theoperationoftheindoorblowerwillnotbeaffectedbyany

If,duringa callforcooling,theindoorfanrunsandcirculatesroom
temperatureairwhilethecompressorandoutdoorfandonot
operate:
1.Waitfiveminutes,asa protectiondevicemaybeholdingthecom-
pressoroff.
2.Checktheroomthermostattoseeifitiscorrectlyset.
3.Iftheroomthermostatiscorrectlyset,calla qualifiedservicerto
determineifoneofthecompressorprotectiondeviceshasopened.
SHORT-CYCLEPROTECTOR
Ashort-cycleprotectorisbuiltintotheignitioncontrol.Eachtimethe
compressorisoffforlessthan3 minutes,theshort-cycleprotector
willdelaycompressorstartupforupto3 minutes.Thisprotectsthe
compressorfromimproperoperation.
NOTE:Theseunitsarenotdesignedtoprovidemechanicalcooling
atoutdoortemperaturesbelow50°F.Iflowambientcoolingis
needed,consulta qualifiedservicer.
IGNITER
Theunithasanelectronicignitiondevicewhichlightstheburners
automatically.Nevertrytolighttheburnersbyhand.Italsohasan
induceddraftblowertoexhaustcombustionproducts.
INDOORAIRCIRCULATORBLOWER
Keepthebloweraccessdoorpanelinplaceexceptforinspectionand
maintenance.
ROUTINEMAINTENANCE
Ifyouperformmaintenanceontheunityourself,rememberthat
certainmechanicalandelectricalknowledge,skillsandtoolsare
requiredtoperformunitmaintenance.Personalinjuryordeathmay
resultIfyouarenotproperlytrained.Youshouldcallyourinstalling
dealerorplaceofpurchaseifyouareuncertainaboutyourabilityto
performmaintenance.

ANNUALINSPECTION
Yourpackageunitshouldbeinspectedbya qualifiedinstaller,or
serviceagencyatleasttwiceeveryyear.Thischeckshouldbe
performedbeforetheheatingandcoolingseasonsbegin.Thiswill
ensurethatadequatecombustionairisbeingdrawnandthevent
systemisworkingproperly.Particularattentionshouldbepaidto
thefollowingitems.Repairasnecessary.
•Checkphysicalsupportoftheunit.Ensureitissoundwithout
anysagging,cracks,orgaps,aroundthebase.
•Checkforobvioussignsofdeteriorationoftheunit.
•FlueHood.Checkforblockage(waspnest,etc.)andcorro-
sion.
FlueHood
•ReturnAirConnection.Checkforphysicalsoundnessand
ensurethattheconnectionisfirmlysealedtothepackageunit
casing.
•Heatexchanger.Checkforcorrosionand/orobstructionswithin
theheatexchangerpassageways.
•Burners.Checkforproperignition,burnerflame,andflame
sense.
•Wiring.Checkelectricalconnectionsfortightnessand/orcor-
rosion.Checkwiresfordamage.
•Filters.Checkthatfiltersarecleanandintheproperplace-
mentintheunitorductsystem.
•Louvers.Inspectairinletlouversinsidetheheatexchanger
compartments.Ensuretheareaiscleanandfreeofdirtand
debris.
REPLACINGORCLEANINGFILTER
IMPORTANTNOTE:Neveroperateunitwithouta filterinstalled
asdustandlintwillbuilduponinternalpartsresultinginlossof
efficiency,equipmentdamageandpossiblefire.
Areturnairfilterisnotsuppliedwiththisunit;however,theremust
bea meansoffilteringthereturnair.Thefilter{s)maybelocated
inthereturnairduct(s).Consultwithyourinstallingdealerforthe
actuallocationofthereturnairfilter(s)inyourunit.
Adirtyfilteristhemostcommoncauseofinadequateheatingor
coolingperformance.Filterinspectionshouldbemadeatleasteverytwo
months;moreoftenifnecessarybecauseoflocalconditionsandusage.
Dirtythrowawayfiltersshouldbediscardedandreplacedwitha new,
cleanfilter.Dirtypermanentfiltersshouldbewashedwithwater,thor-
oughlydriedandsprayedwitha filteradhesivebeforebeingreinstalled.
(Filteradhesivesmaybefoundatmanyhardwarestores.)Permanent
filtersshouldlastseveralyears.However,shouldonebecomefornor
uncleanable,itshouldbereplaced.
Wheninstallinganewfilterorreinstallinganoldone,alwaysmakecertain
theairflowarrowsonthefilterpointintheproperdirection.
CLEANOUTSIDECOIL(QUALIFIEDSERVICERONLY)

theenclosedarea.Carbonmonoxideemissionscanbe(re)circulated
throughoutthestructureifthefurnaceorairhandlerisoperatinginany
mode.
