INTRODUCTION
Thank You for purchasing a Gorman‐Rupp Di
aphragm Primer. Read this manual carefully to
learn how to safely install and operate your Di
aphragm Primer. Failure to do so could result in
personal injury or damage to the pump.
Because pump installations are seldom identical,
this manual cannot possibly provide detailed in
structions and precautions for every aspect of
each specific application. Therefore, it is the re
sponsibility of the owner/installer of the pump to
ensure that applications not addressed in this
manual are performed only after establishing that
neither operator safety nor pump integrity are com
promised by the installation. Pumps and related
equipment must be installed and operated ac
cording to all national, local and industry stan
dards.
If there are any questions regarding the di
aphragm primer, pump or its application which are
not covered in this manual or in other literature ac
companying this unit, please contact your Gor

HAZARD AND INSTRUCTION
DEFINITIONS
The following are used to alert maintenance per
sonnel to procedures which require special atten
tion, to those which could damage equipment, and
to those which could be dangerous to personnel:
Immediate hazards which WILL result in
severe personal injury or death. These
instructions describe the procedure re
quired and the injury which will result
from failure to follow the procedure.
Hazards or unsafe practices which
COULD result in severe personal injury
or death. These instructions describe
the procedure required and the injury
which could result from failure to follow
the procedure.
Hazards or unsafe practices which COULD
result in minor personal injury or product
or property damage. These instructions
describe the requirements and the possi
ble damage which could result from failure
to follow the procedure.
NOTE
Instructions to aid in installation, operation, and
maintenance or which clarify a procedure.

This information applies to Gorman-
Rupp Diaphragm Primers. Refer to the
manual accompanying the pump and
power source before attempting to be
gin operation.
Because pump installations are seldom
identical, this manual cannot possibly
provide detailed instructions and pre
cautions for each specific application.
Therefore, it is the owner/installer's re
sponsibility to ensure that applications
not addressed in this manual are per
formed only after establishing that nei
ther operator safety nor pump integrity
are compromised by the installation.
This manual will alert personnel to
known procedures which require spe
cial attention, to those which could
damage equipment, and to those which
could be dangerous to personnel. How
ever, this manual cannot possibly antici
pate and provide detailed instructions
and precautions for every situation that
might occur during maintenance of the
unit. Therefore, it is the responsibility of
the owner/maintenance personnel to
ensure that only safe, established main
tenance procedures are used, and that
any procedures not addressed in this
manual are performed only after estab
lishing that neither personal safety nor
pump integrity are compromised by
such practices.
Before attempting to open or service the
pump:
1. Familiarize yourself with this man
ual.
2. Shut down the engine and discon
nect the positive battery cable, or
lock out incoming power to the mo
tor and take precautions to ensure
that the pump will remain inopera
tive.
3. Allow the pump to completely cool
if overheated.
4. Check the temperature and make
sure the pump is cool before open
ing any covers, plates, or plugs.
5. Close the suction and discharge
valves.
6. Vent the pump slowly and cau
tiously.
7. Drain the pump.
Death or serious personal injury and
damage to the diaphragm primer or
components can occur if proper lifting
procedures are not observed. Make cer
tain that hoists, chains, slings or cables
are in good working condition and of
sufficient capacity and that they are po
sitioned so that loads will be balanced
and the diaphragm primer or compon
ents will not be damaged when lifting.
Suction and discharge hoses must be
removed from the diaphragm primer be
fore lifting. Lift the diaphragm primer or
component only as high as necessary
and keep personnel away from suspen
ded objects.

When checking alignment, disconnect
the power source to ensure that the
pump will remain inoperative. Rotating
parts can catch clothing, fingers or
tools, causing severe injury to person
nel.
Do not operate the diaphragm primer
without a guard in place over the rotat
ing parts. Exposed rotating parts can
catch clothing, fingers, or tools, causing
severe injury to personnel.
This diaphragm primer may be used to
handle materials which could cause ill
ness through direct exposure or emitted
fumes. Wear adequate protective cloth
ing when working on the diaphragm
primer or piping.
Most cleaning solvents are toxic and
flammable. Use them only in a well‐ven
tilated area free from excessive heat,
sparks, and flame. Read and follow all
precautions printed on solvent contain
ers.
After the pump has been installed, make
certain that the pump and all piping or
hose connections are tight, properly
supported and secure before operation.
Use Only Genuine Gorman-Rupp re
placement parts. Failure to do so may cre
ate a hazard and damage the diaphragm
primer or diminish optimal diaphragm
primer performance. Any such hazard,
damage or diminished performance is not
covered by the warranty.
Pumps and related equipment must be in
stalled and operated according to all na
tional, local and industry standards.
Adjusting the alignment in one direction
may alter the alignment in another direc
tion. Check each procedure after altering
alignment.
It may be possible for a small amount of flu
id to be expelled from the discharge port of
the diaphragm primer. If any notable
amount of fluid is being discharged during
operation, it could indicate necessary re
pairs within the priming chamber assem
bly. If the discharged fluid is lubricating oil,
the diaphragm primer should be inspected
and repaired as necessary.
Shaft and bearing disassembly in the field
is not recommended. These operations
should be performed only in a properly
equipped shop by qualified personnel.

Bearings must be kept free of all dirt and
foreign material. Failure to do so will great
ly shorten bearing life. Do not spin dry
bearings. This may scratch the rollers or
races and cause premature bearing fail
ure.
Monitor the condition of the bearing lubri
cant regularly for evidence of rust or mois
ture condensation. This is especially im
portant in areas where variable hot and
cold temperatures are common.

Since pump installations are seldom identical, this
section offers only general recommendations and
practices required to inspect and install the Di
aphragm Primer. Refer to the literature accompa
nying the pump or contact the factory for specific
pump installation instructions. Refer to MAINTE
NANCE AND REPAIR, Section E in this manual for
disassembly and reassembly of the Diaphragm
Primer
PREINSTALLATION INSPECTION
The diaphragm primer was inspected and tested
before shipment from the factory. Before installa
tion, inspect the pump for damage which may have
occurred during shipment. Check as follows:
a. Inspect the pump for cracks, dents, damaged
threads, and other obvious damage.
b. Check for and tighten loose attaching hard
ware. Since gaskets tend to shrink after dry
ing, check for loose hardware at mating sur
faces.
c. Carefully read all tags, decals, and markings
on the pump assembly, and perform all duties
indicated.
d. Check levels and lubricate as necessary. Re
fer to LUBRICATION in the MAINTE
NANCE AND REPAIR section of this manual
and perform duties as instructed.
e. If the pump and/or power source have been
stored for more than 12 months, some of the
components or lubricants may have exceed
ed their maximum shelf life. These must be in
spected or replaced to ensure maximum
pump service.
