INTRODUCTION
This Installation, Operation, and Maintenance
manual is designed to help you achieve the best
performance and longest life from your Gorman-
Rupp pump.
This pump is an S-Series submersible model, de-
signed to handle dirty water that does not contain
largeentrainedsolids.Donotattempttopumpvol-
atile, flammable or corrosive liquids that may dam-
age the pump. The basic materials of construction
are castiron andstainless steel,with acastironim-
peller.
The pump may be operated fully or partially sub-
merged, but should not be operated dry for ex-
tended periods. The pump is not explosion-proof,
and should not be operated in a hazardous atmo-
sphere.
If there are any questions regarding the pump or
its application which are not covered in this man-
ual or in other literature accompanying this unit,

The following are used to alert maintenance personnel to procedures which require special attention, to
those which could damage equipment, and to those which could be dangerous to personnel:

This information applies to S-Series
submersible motor driven pumps.
Do not operate this pump where explo-
sive vaporsorflammable material exist.
Death or serious injury will result.
Beforeattemptingtoopenorservicethe
pump:
1. Familiarize yourself with this man-
ual.
2. Unplug the pump power cable to
ensure that the pump will remain
inoperative.
3. Allow the pump to cool if over-
heated.
This pump is designed to handle dirty
water that does not contain large en-
trained solids. It is not designed to
pump volatile, flammable or corrosive
materials. Do not attempt to pump any
liquids which may damage the pump or
endanger personnel asa result of pump
failure.
Never attempt to alter the length or re-
pair any power cable with a splice. The
pump motor and cable must be com-
pletelywaterproof.Damagetothepump
or personal injury may result from alter-
ations.
Afterthepumphasbeeninstalled,make
certain that the pump and all piping or
hoseconnections are secure before op-
eration.
Do not attempt to lift the pump by the
power cable or piping. Attach proper
lifting equipment to the lifting handle
fitted to the pump.
Obtain the services of a qualified elec-
trician to troubleshoot, test and/or ser-
vice the electrical components of this
pump.
Pumps and related equipment must be in-
stalled and operated according to all na-
tional, local and industry standards.

This section only summarizes recommended in-
stallation practices for the pump. If there are ques-
tions concerning yourspecific application, contact
your local distributor or the Gorman-Rupp Com-
pany.
Pumps and related equipment must be in-
stalled and operated according to all na-
tional, local and industry standards.
PREINSTALLATION INSPECTION
Before installation, inspect the pump for damage
whichmay haveoccurredduring shipment. Check
as follows:
a. Inspectthepumpassemblyforcracks,dents,
damaged threads, and other obvious dam-
age.
b. Check for and tighten loose attaching hard-
ware.
c. Thepumpisfurnishedwitha30-foot (9meter)
longpowercable.Inspectthecablefor cutsor
damage.
d. Carefully read all tags, decals, and markings
onthepumpassembly,andperformallduties
as indicated.
If anything appears to be abnormal, contact your
Gorman-Rupp distributor or the factory to deter-
minethe repairor updating policy. Donotputthe
pump into service until appropriate action has
been taken.
Lubrication
The shaft seal and bearings in this pump are fully
lubricated from the factory. No additional lubrica-
tion is required.

Pump Dimensions
Thepumpisprovidedwithasuctionstrainertopre-
vent large solids from clogging the impeller. See
Figure 1for the approximate physical dimensions
of the pump.

Model
Lifting
Thispumpisdesignedtobelightweightandporta-
ble, with a convenient carry handle that makes it
ideal for general contracting applications. Each
pump weighs approximately 28 lbs. (13 kg.). The
weight does not include the discharge piping.
Attach a rope or chain to the lifting handle on the
top of the pump. Do not lift the unit by the power
cable or the discharge piping. Customer installed
equipment such as rigid discharge piping mustbe
removed before attempting to lift.

Do not attempt to lift the pump by the

lifting equipment to the handle on the

Positioning the Pump
This pump is designed to operate fully or partially
submerged; however, it should not be operated
dry for extended periods of time.
Extended dry operation will destroy the
seal assembly.
Never place the pump on loose or soft ground; the
pump could sink, preventing water from reaching
theimpeller(seeFigure3).

Secure and support the pump by the handle on
the pump. If the bottomis heavilysludge-covered,
restthepumponsupportblocksorsuspenditnear
thesurfaceoftheliquid.Iftheapplicationinvolvesa
lotofdebris,protectthepumpfromexcessivewear
and clogging by suspending it in a perforated bar-
rel or culvert pipe. See Figure 4 for correct pump
installations.
Thepumpisprovidedwithasuctionstrainertopre-
vent large solids from clogging the impeller. Any
spherical solids which pass through the strainer
will pass through the pump.

PIPING
The pump volute is equipped with a standardNPT
tapped discharge connection. Either hose or rigid
pipe may be used for the discharge connection.
For maximum pumping capacity, use non-collaps-
iblehoseorrigidpiping,andkeepthedischargeas
short and straight as possible. If rigid piping is
used,minimizetheuseofelbowsandfittingswhich
increasefrictionlossesand reduce pumpperform-
ance.
A check valve or throttling valve may be installedin
thedischargelinetocontrolsiphoningorbackflow
when the pump is shut off.

endanger personnel asa result of pump
failure.
Install the pump and piping as described in IN-
STALLATION,SectionB.
Manual Operation
Thepumpisprovidedwitha30-foot(3m)power
cable. Never splice the power cable due to safety
and warranty considerations.
Never attempt to alter the length or re-
pair any power cable with a splice. The
pump motor and cable must be com-
pletelywaterproof.Damagetothepump
or personal injury may result from alter-
ations.
Always keep the plug end dry.

Formanualoperation,simplyplugthepowercable
intoany115 voltgrounded receptacle. It isstrong-
ly recommended that a Ground Fault Interrupter
(GFI) type receptacle (or equivalent) be used (see
Figure 2).
Always use a three-prong grounded re-
ceptacle. It is strongly recommended
that a Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI)
typereceptacle(orequivalent)be used.

Automatic Operation
A float switch assembly is available as an option
fromthefactorytoprovideforautomaticoperation.
Observe the following instructions for automatic
operation.
1. Attach the plastic tieon the float switch power
cable to the standpipe in the sump at the ap-
proximate desired liquid level. Do not allow

theliquidleveltodropbelowthebottomofthe
pump motor cover to ensure cooling of the
pump motor.
2. The tie is positioned on the cable approxi-
mately6inches(152mm)belowthefloat.This
setting allows approximately 9 inches (229
mm) of liquid rise between pump start/stop.
The start/stop interval may be increased by
loosening thenut on the plastictie swiveland
extending the float end of the power cable.
The liquid level in the sump will increase ap-
proximately8inches(203mm)betweenstart/
stop intervals for every 6 inches (152 mm) of
cable increase.
3. Plug the pump power cable into the female
end of the float cable plug.
4. Plugthefloatcableintoagrounded recep-
tacle. It is strongly recommended that a
Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) type recep-
tacle(orequivalent)beused(seeFigure2).
Operational Checks
Checkthepumpforproperoperationwhenitisfirst
started and periodically thereafter toidentify minor
problems.
Check the pump for unusual noises or excessive
vibration while it is operating. If noise or vibration is
excessive, stop the pump and refer to the
troubleshooting chart for possible causes.
Check the pump strainer screen for clogging
caused by stones, sticks, or other debris. Clean
the strainer screenwhen required. In somecases,
stopping the pump momentarily may back flush
the strainer screen, purging most of the debris
from it. If this fails to clean the screen, unplug the
pump , remove it from the sump, and remove the
debris manually (see MAINTENANCE AND RE-
PAIR in Section E).
Never introduce air or steam pressure into the
pump casing or piping to remove a blockage. This
could result in personal injury or damage to the
equipment. If backflushing is absolutely neces-
sary, liquidpressuremust be limited to 50%ofthe
maximum permissible operating pressure shown
on the pump performance curve (see MAINTE-
NANCE AND REPAIR,SectionE).
STOPPING
To stop the pump when in manual mode, simply
unplug it from the receptacle. After stopping the
pump,besuretoperformallrequiredmaintenance
and preservation procedures.
This pump is equipped with automatic
thermaloverloadprotectionwhichwillstop
the pump if overheating occurs. Unplug
the pump and allow it to cool before at-
tempting to service the pump.
When operated in the automatic mode, the pump
will stop and start as the liquid level rises and falls.
For service or extended stopping, unplug both the
pump and float switch from the receptacle.
Storage and Cold Weather Preservation
After stopping the pump, use the rope or chain at-
tached to the lifting handle on the pump to remove
the pump from the sump. Do notlift the unit by the
power cable or the discharge piping. Customer in-
stalled equipment such as rigid discharge piping
must be removed before attempting to lift.
Do not attempt to lift the pump by the
power cable or piping. Attach proper
lifting equipment to the handle on the
pump.
Clean the strainer screen before storage. If the
applicationinvolves alotofmud or sludge, remove
the strainer and clean the impeller before storage.
NOTE
The most common cause of failure to run is hard-
ened mud or sludge in the impeller.
In freezing temperatures, the pump will not freeze
as long as it is submerged in liquid. If the pump
casing is not submerged, or if the liquid begins to
freeze, remove the pump from the sump and allow
