The refrigeratingsystem of directcoolingthree-system refrigerator
belongsto the categoryof three circulatingsystem. It isformedby adding
another 3-waysolenoid valve andacapillaryto adouble-system. Wecan
control the twovalves to make refrigerant gothrough differentlines.For
example, 1->2->3->4->5->6->7->9 、1->2->3->4->5->6->8->9 or
1->2->3->4->5->9.
Whentherefrigerator is just powered on, the refrigerant flowsthrough
the adjusttemperature compartmentevaporatorsandfreezer
compartmentevaporators. Afterthe adjust temperature compartment
temperaturehas reachedtherequired value,thesolenoidvalveis
energized, thus causetherefrigerant toflowthroughtheRefrigerator
Compartment evaporators、freezercompartment evaporatorsor soft freezer

5Normal Phenomena—Not Troubles forRefrigerators
Inadomesticrefrigerator, there isnot onlya complicatedelectric control
system, but alsoarefrigeratingsystemthatis difficult todiscernwhether it
isin agood working condition.Boththesystemsare relatedandaffect
eachother.If acertainpart ofarefrigerator worksabnormally.Its
refrigeratingefficiencywill decrease,operationpropertieswill become
unstable ,or even it cannot be used normallyfor thoseserious cases.
Refrigerators are generallyof larger volume,oncetroublesappear ,to
send them toaservicedepartmentisreallyatough thing ,ifsuchisthe
case ,theuser will alwaysbe in suspense,sometimes,normal phenomena
will be erroneouslyregardedas troubles .Therefore,beforewedeal with
the topicsof frequentlyoccurring troublesof refrigerators andtheir
remedies ,weshouldfirstlygiveabriefaccount of some normal
phenomena whichare not troubles.Incaseanyone of suchphenomena
occurs ,thereisnoneed to worryabout it,and theuser canuseit at total
ease.
1).Whenthecompressorofarefrigerator has just stopped running ,a
rumblingsoundcanbe heard from inside itsevaporator .Thisisasound
caused bythe flowing ofrefrigerant in the evaporator tubing.Becausethe
pressuredifference is stillgreater after thecompressorhasjust stopped
running,the refrigerantwill flowforacertain time, therefore ,this sound isa
normalphenomenon.
2).Aclick sound can oftenbeheard fromtherefrigerator .This isa
normalsoundproduced bythepull-in or release ofthe armatureof a
currentdeadweight startrelaywhenstartingthecompressor.The
compressormotorwill produceaslight and uniformsound while it is
running.Thissoundis not easyto beheard in thedaytime ,but ofcourseit
can behearddistinctlyat night.
3).Thecompressor consistsofanelectricmotor andacompressing
apparatus.Duringits normaloperation,the motor’sstator coreand
windings will riseto atemperatureintherange of 100 ~110 ,and the
temperature ofthe piston andcylinder of the compressingmechanismcan
alsoreach asabove 100 due to the heatproducedwhen compressing
refrigerant.Most ofthe heat radiatesto theair throughthecompressor
casing,therefore,itscasingis generally at atemperature between 85 ~90
,it isveryhot,particularlyin summerwhen the ambient temperatureis
higher .Alltheseare normal phenomena .
4).For the direct cooling refrigerator,akindof irregular cracksound can
be oftenheard whenthecompressor isrunningforacertain periodof time
or has juststopped itsrunning .Thissound iscausedbythe stress relief
due to expansionand contraction when temperature changes,andwill not
affect thenormalapplicationof refrigerator .

6 CommonTroubles inRefrigerators and TheirRemedies
Causesfor troubles occurringin refrigeratorsareclosely relatedto the
qualityofcomponentsandworkmanshipinassemblingbymanufacturers
aswhether refrigeratorsareproperlyusedandmaintained.Theparameters
generallyused to expressthe workingconditionsofarefrigerator include
the temperature inside therefrigerator ,operationrate ,electric power
consumption,noiselevel ,and other functional indexes .If anyone of these
parametersis beyond its permissiblerange,this indicatesthat there isa
fault or troubleinthe refrigerator .
During the whole service lifeofarefrigerator,theprobabilityof troubles
occurringwithin aunion timeiscalledits failurerate .Making acomparison
between the control circuit system ofarefrigerator andits refrigerating
system ,wecanfindthat thefailurerateof theformer ishigher ,andthatof
thethermostatisthehighest . Introubleshooting,the first thingyoumustdo
is todeterminewhere thetrouble comes from--- the controlsystemor the
refrigeratingsystem .Thereisgeneral notrouble indicatinginstrument
mountedon thedomesticrefrigerator,locationsand naturesoftroubles
shouldbedetermined according to their respective
features,therefore ,experienceinservicing isveryimportant to
troubleshooting.Service technicianswith richexperiencecancorrectly
locate themand takereasonable remedymeasuresbased on their
comprehensiveanalysisof troublecharacteristicsaswell asoperating
conditions for various kindsof refrigerators.
ThreeEssentials for Checkup
1) Look
a) Checkthetubingof refrigeratingsystemforcracksandvarious
welding points for leaks ;if leakage occurs ,an oil staincanbeseen
definitely.
b) Checkthe suction and exhaust pressurevalues (highpressureand
lowpressure) of compressor tosee whethertheyare normal .
c)Checktheconditions offrost attachedtoits evaporator and gas
returntube.It isabnormaliffrost has formed onpartof theevaporator or
there is nofrost attached toit .
d) Payattentiontothespeedof temperaturedrop insidefreezer
compartment .It is abnormal if the speedof temperaturedrop isobviously
slower than the corresponding normal speed.
e) Checktheenvironmenttoseewhether it is suitable for placing a
refrigerator.
f) Checkrefrigerator door seal,case ,table surface andheatinsulation
layer .
g) Lookat the maincontrol board toascertain if various indication
statesare normal.
2) Listen
a) Listen to thenoisesproducedwhen the compressor isrunning

Humsfromafullyenclosedaggregate unit isthe sound causedby
overload indicating that the motor cannot bestarted normally,meanwhile ,a
clattering soundcan beheard frominsidethestart relay,which is produced
becausethestart contactscannotbereleasednormally.Awhistlingsound
is caused bythe high pressure gasflowing out of thecrackof thepressure
tube inside the compressor ,andclucks arethe soundofstriking after the
suspendedspringinsidethe compressor hasbroken .
During the normaloperationof compressor ,a slightand uniform hum
sound duetoundulationofelectric current can be heard generally,thisisa
normalphenomenon.However,if it soundslike “tong,tong …”,i.e., an
impact sound inside thecompressor ,thismeans that alarge quantityofwet
vapour of refrigerant orrefrigeratingoil hascomeintothecompressor
cylinder ;if it sounds like “dang ,dang…”,astriking sound ofmetal parts
inside the compressor ,thismeans thatsomemovingpartshaveloosened
(noteto differentiate thissoundfromthoseformed duringstarting or
stoppingthecompressor).
b)Listentothe sound caused bythe flowing of gas intheevaporator
Opentherefrigerator door while thecompressor isin operation,incline
your ear andlisten attentivelythegasflowsoundinsidetheevaporator .If it
soundslikegentlewhistlingaccompanied byasoundsimilar towater
flowing ,thisisthesoundproducedbythenormal circulationofrefrigerant
within theevaporator .In caseonlythe gas flowing sound can be heardand
thereisno waterflowingsound,thisindicatesthatthe refrigeranthas
alreadypercolated.If neither theflowing sound nor thegas sounds from
theevaporatorcanbe heard,thismeansthatthefilter orcapillaryhasbeen
clogged.
3)Touchand Feel
a) Feel thecompressor whenrunning,itstemperature shouldbe
generallyless than90 in thenormalstate(it mayexceed 90 incase
of runningfor alonger period of time).
b) After thecompressor has operated normallyfor 5~10minutes ,
ouch and feel the condenser ,thetemperatureof itsupperpart should be
higher than thatofitslower part (or itsright partishotter thanitsleft
part ,depending onthe typeof condenser coil ),this indicates that the
refrigerantiscirculating.If thecondenserisnothot ,thismeansthe
leakageofrefrigerant .Incasethecondenser radiatesheat for onlyseveral
minutes andthen coolsdown,this meansthat the filter andcapillaryhave
been clogged.As for the forcedair cooling condenser ,hot airwill be blown
out of it ;thismeansthat the system is out of order .
c)Feel thefilter’stemperature.Duringthenormaloperationof
refrigeratingsystem,the temperatureonthe filter’ssurface should be a
littlehigher than the ambient temperature;ifyoutouchitwith your
hand ,you will haveasenseof slight heat.In case dewcondensation
appearsdue to thefactthat itstemperatureis obviouslylower than the

ambient temperature ,this means thatmostmeshes ofitsscreenhasbeen
clogged,resulting in anobstructed flowing of refrigerant ,thuscausing a
dropintemperature duetothrottling.
d) Feel thetemperatureof exhaustgasfromthe refrigerating
system .theexhaust gasshould be veryhot andthisis thenormalworking
state .For those refrigeratorwith enclosed typeof compressorrefrigerating
system, nofrost or dewdropwill fromonthegas suction
tube,otherwise,there issomethingwrongin thesystem (Frostinganddew
condensation mayappear for a veryshort time periodwhen just starting the
machine,this isa normalphenomenon).
Because arefrigerator isacombinationof several components,theyare
relatedand haveinfluence oneachother .In casean abnormal
phenomenonhas been foundthroughtheabove-mentioned checkups,you
need not tomakeahastyconclusionbasedon onlyoneabnormal
phenomenon.It is advisable to find out twoor moreabnormal
phenomenon,or conducttroubleshootingcomprehensivelywith the aidof
instrumentsor otherways,because several kindsoftroublesmayshare a
commonabnormal phenomenon,andtwoor moreabnormal phenomena
mayoccur simultaneouslydue toacertain trouble.Withthismethod,you
can reject some suspicioustroubles and finallymake a correct judgment .
7Analysis of Troubles and Troubleshooting
A. Poor Refrigerating Effect
The so-called “poor refrigerating effect “refersto thefact thatthe
refrigeratorcanoperateandrefrigerator normally,but the temperaturein
the refrigeratorcannot drop totheprescribed valueunder thestipulated
working conditions.In viewof there aremanycauses forthis
phenomenon,weare going todiscuss andanalyze it inthe following 7
aspects:
1) Leakageof refrigerant
Analysis of Trouble
Theleakage ofrefrigerant inthe systemwill result in an insufficient
refrigeratingcapacity,theresultingphenomenaare its lower gas suction
pressureandexhaust pressureaswell ashigher exhaust gas
temperature.Theexhausttubefeelsratherhot,andacontinuousgas
flowing sound louder than usual can be heardat the outlet ofthe
capillary,and nofrost orasmallerquantityof loose frost appearsonthe
evaporator .After shut down,thebalance pressure inthesystem isusually
lower than thesaturationpressure corresponding to thesame ambient
temperature.
Remedy
In casethere isleakageofrefrigerant from the system ,do not hurryto
recharge it with refrigerant ,managetofindoutleak points immediately,and
makeanoteoffromwhere it leaks---welding pointsandparts.Afterhaving
them repaired,recharge refrigerant .

Therearesomanyjointsand sealedsurfacesin a
refrigerator,accordingly,quitealotpotential leakpoints do existin the
system .Introubleshooting ,payattention to thosepartsthat areliableto
leak ,checkmain connectionpointsforoil seepage andtubing for cracks .If
thereisno severer leak point,charge the systemwith nitrogen anddetect
leak pointswith thecommonlyadoptedmethod ,repair
them,evacuate ,chargethesystem withrefrigerant ,andthen turn onthe
refrigeratortomake a test run.
2) Too muchrefrigerant charged into the system
Analysis of Trouble
a) In casethe amountof refrigerantcharged into the systemexceeds
its nominalcapacity,the superfluousrefrigerantwill of coursetakesome
spaceof theevaporator ,thus reducingitsheat-dissipationarea and hence
the refrigeratingefficiencyof the system .Theabnormal phenomena
caused bythis reason areasfollows:the gas suction and exhaust
pressuresare generallyhigher thantheir respectivenormal values ,the
temperatureof its condenser ishigherandtheelectric current ofthe
compressorrises ,loose frost forms on the evaporator,therefrigerator
temperaturedrops slowly,and frost appears onthe gas returntube .
b) Incaseexcessiverefrigeranthas beencharged ,theliquid
refrigerantthatcannot evaporatesin theevaporatorwill return to the
compressor,and thusaphenomenonof “liquid striking”will occur.The
liquid refrigerantevaporatesand effervesces as soon asit flowsintothe
refrigeratingoilatthe bottom of compressor .If the conditionis
severe,foams will fill all over insidethe compressor housingandbe sucked
bythepiston,causing damage to the componentsof compressor .
Remedy
According to the operatingprocedures,it ismandatoryto turnthe
machine off ,andseveral minuteslater,opentherefrigerant chargingtube
and letthe refrigerant escape fromit ,replacethedryfilter ,recharge
refrigerant after evacuating ,andthen seal the charging port.
3) Thereis air left in the refrigeratingsystem
Analysis of Trouble
Residual airin therefrigeratingsystemwill reduce itsrefrigerating
efficiency.Theprominentphenomenaaretheincreaseinitsgassuction
and exhaust pressures (however ,the gas exhaust pressure will not exceed
itsratedvalue),obviousincrease in temperatureinthe segmentfromthe
compressoroutletto thecondenser inlet .Because there is airinthe
system ,boththe gasexhaust pressure andtemperature will rise,and
moreover ,thegas flowing soundisintermittent andobviouslylouder .
Remedy
After shut downfor severalminutes,open thetubing ,evacuateit and
thenrechargethe systemwith refrigerant .
