Ashes -Ashesshouldneverbeallowedtoaccumulateinthe

togooutandalsocancauseseveredamagetothegrates
becauseoftheabsenceofacoolingowofairbeneaththem.
Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tight
ttinglid.Theclosedcontainerofashesshouldbeplaced
onanoncombustibleoororontheground,wellawayfrom
allcombustiblematerials,pendingnaldisposal.Iftheashes
aredisposedofbyburialinsoilorotherwiselocallydispersed,
theyshouldberetainedintheclosedcontainer[outsidethe
dwelling)untilallcindershavethoroughlycooled.
Coalproducesconsiderablymoreashthanwood.Sothe
intervals between emptying are much shorter. For equal
heatoutput,coalwillproduceseventotentimesmoreash
thanwood.

Withtheexceptionofstartuporincreasingheatfromalow
re, or removing ashes, the bottom door should be kept
closed.NeverinstallaHarmanfurnacetoachimneywitha
historyofdowndrafts.

ASHES SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO
ACCUMULATE ABOVE THE TOP OF THE ASH PAN.
ASHES IN CONTACT WITH THE BOTTOM OF THE
GRATES ACT AS AN INSULATOR, INTENSIFYING THE
HEAT ON THE GRATES, AND COULD CAUSE THEIR
WARPAGE. WITH AN EXCESSIVE ASH BUILDUP,
PRIMARY COMBUSTION AIR IS RESTRICTED. THUS
THE UNIT’S OUTPUT COULD BE REDUCED.
Draft Control Settings - The idle air adjustment on the
apperdoormayneedtobeadjustedslightlylessforcoal
thanforwood.Hereagain,experiencewilldictatethebest
setting.Themaximumairadjustmentboltcanbesetatthe
maximumpositionforquickrecovery.Whenalongerthan
normalburn time is desired, themaximum air adjustment
canbereduced.Neveradjustthemaximumairboltwhen
theapperdoorisopened.SeeFig.6.
Safety Tips
Whenopeningtheloadingdoor,itshouldbecrackedopen
slightlyforafewsecondstoallowoxygentoburnanygases
thatmaybepresentandtoallowsmoketobedrawnaway
fromthedoor.
Wheneverthebottomdoorisopen,itshouldbeclosedbefore
openingtheloadingdoor.Thisistoincreasedraftthrough
theloadingdoorandpreventexcesssmokefromescaping.
Thereboxshouldneverbelledwithexcessivecoalsothat
theueexitisblockedorimpededinanyway.Burningcoal
generatescarbonmonoxide.Iftheuegasexitisblocked,
thecarbonmonoxidecanbeforcedoutofthefurnaceinto
theroomwithpossiblefatal consequences.
Chimney Troubleshooting
Not Enough Draft -Chimneyistoolow.Achimneyshould
betwofeethigherthananythingtenfeetaroundit.
Airmaybeleakinginaroundaloosettingclean-outdoor,
uepipemaynotbetightatjoints,orthemasonrymaybe
defective.
Chimneymaybeblockedwithcreosoteorbirdnests,etc.
Impropersizedchimneyorstovepipe.
Toomanyelbows.
Distance of more than eight feet between furnace and
chimney.
Down Drafts - Trees or other topographical barriers may
impede the chimneys operation causing a down draft
condition to exist. This can also be caused by adjacent
buildingsorchimneys.
Creosote and Condensation - Ifcreosoteorcondensation
runsoutofthechimneyorstovepipe,checkthefollowing.
Chimneycaporliningmaybedefective.
Furnace may be too far from chimney, not allowing the
chimneytogetwarm.
Woodbeingburnedmaybegreenorwet.
Unitmaybetoolargeforhomecausingwoodtobeburned
tooslow.
Excessive Draft -Thiscanbecontrolledwithabarometric
draftcontrolonthestovepipe.
