2. Always check your local building codes prior to
installation. This installation must comply with all
local, regional, state and national codes and
regulations.
3. Installation and repair should be done by a quali ied
service person. This appliance should also be
inspected annually by a quali ied service person. More
requent inspections/cleaning may be required due
to excessive lint rom carpeting, bedding materials,
etc. It is imperative that the control compartment,
burners and circulating air passageways o the
appliance be kept clean.
4. This is a vented decorative gas appliance. Do not
burn wood or other material in this appliance.
5. NEVER leave children unattended when there is a
ire burning in the appliance.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
6. This appliance may only use the approved venting
systems shown in these installation instructions.
Venting must not be connected to chimney lue
servicing a solid uel burning appliance or a gas uel
burning appliance.
7. NEVER use gasoline, gasoline-type lantern uel,
kerosene, charcoal lighter luid, or similar liquids in
this appliance. Keep any lammable liquids a sa e
distance rom the appliance.
8. While servicing this appliance, always shut o all
electricity and gas to the appliance. This will prevent
possible electrical shock or burns. Also, make sure
the appliance is completely cooled be ore servicing.
9. Do not use this appliance i any part has been under
water. Immediately call a quali ied service technician
to inspect the appliance and to replace any part o the
control system and any gas control which has been
under water.

air openings into the combustion chamber and
adequate accessibility clearances or servicing and

A. APPLIANCE SPECIFICATIONS
1. U.S. AND CANADA CERTIFICATION
The NANOV Series gas appliance has been tested in
accordance with the ANSI standard Z2 .88-2000 in
the United States, and the current CSA 2.33-2000 in
Canada, and has been listed by Underwriters
Laboratories Inc. or installation as described in this
manual. All components are UL, AGA, CGA or CSA
sa ety certi ied.
2. LOCAL CODES
This installation must con orm with local codes. In
the absence o local codes comply with the National
Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223. -latest edition, in the U.S.A.
and the CAN/CGA B 49 Installation Codes in Canada.
The NANOV Series gas appliance has been tested
and listed or use in manu actured housing (mobile
homes). These installation instructions con orm with
the Manufactured Home Construction and Safety
Standard, Title 24 CFR, Part 3280, or when such a
standard is not applicable, the standard or
Manufactured Home Installations, ANSI A225. .

3. GLASS SPECIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS
Heatilator gas appliances manu actured with
tempered glass may be installed in hazardous
locations such as bathtub enclosures as de ined by
the CPSC. The tempered glass has been tested and
certi ied to the requirements o ANSI Z97. - 984 and
CPSC 6 CFR 202. (Sa ety Glazing Certi ication
Council SGCC# 595 and 597. Architectural Testing,
Inc. Reports 02-3 9 9.0 and 02-3 9 7.0 .)
This statement is in compliance with SPCS 6 CFR
Section 20 .5 Certi ication and labeling
requirements which re ers to 5 USC 2063 stating
Such certi icate shall accompany the product or
shall otherwise be urnished to any distributor or
retailer to whom the product is delivered.
Some local building codes require the use o tempered
glass with permanent marking in such locations.
Glass meeting this requirement is available rom the

1. APPLIANCE LOCATIONS AND SPACE
REQUIREMENTS
Figure 1 illustrates a variety o ways the appliance
may be located in a room. The NANOV Series may be
installed directly on the loor or raised on a hearth.
These appliances are certi ied or installation in a
bedroom, bed/sitting room or in manu actured
housing (mobile homes) in the U.S. and Canada.
2. CLEARANCES
Figure 2 shows all clearances that must be
maintained around the appliance. See page 10 or
termination cap clearances.

C. FRAMING
Figure 3 shows a typical raming o this appliance using combustible materials. Figure 4 shows the mantel heights or
mantel projections. All required clearances to combustibles must be adhered to.

D. SETTING THE APPLIANCE
This appliance may be placed on a smooth combustible or noncombustible continuous, lat sur ace. When the appliance
is installed directly on carpeting, tile or other combustible material other than wood looring, the appliance shall be
installed on a metal or wood panel extending the ull width and depth o the appliance. Slide the appliance into position
and level the appliance rom side-to-side and ront-to-back. Shim with noncombustible material as necessary.
Secure the appliance by bending out the nailing langes on each side o the appliance and nail to raming. The nailing
langes have been positioned 5/8 inch back rom the ront o the appliance to allow the addition o drywall.
WARNING!
To prevent contact with sagging or loose insulation,
the appliance must not be installed against vapor
barriers or exposed insulation.

E. VENTING
WARNING - RISK OF FIRE!
This appliance may only use the direct vent
chimney system designed for use with the
appliance and must not be connected to a chimney
flue servicing a separate solid fuel or gas fuel
burning appliance.
WARNING - RISK OF FIRE!
If you have chosen horizontal termination, be sure
there are no future obstructions from trees,
bushes, snow drifts, etc.
CAUTION:
Provisions shall be made to provide adequate
combustion and ventilation air.

1. HORIZONTAL VENT TERMINATION
(USING SUPPLIED PIECES ONLY)
This kit is supplied with a standard vent kit that will
meet the majority o installations or this Heatilator
appliance. This kit consists o a 90° starter elbow, a
6-9 slip section, a wall shield, and a termination cap.
A typical installation using these parts is diagrammed,
along with the clearances to combustible materials
around the vent, in Figure 5. a. Vent Lengths
Various venting con igurations are shown in
Figures 6-9 rom which maximum vent lengths
can be determined.

Always maintain minimum air space clearances
or greater around the chimney system. See Figure
5. Do not pack air spaces with insulation or other
material.
WARNING!
The horizontal run of vent must have a ¼ rise for
every ft. of run towards the termination. Never
allow the vent to run downward. This could cause
high temperatures and may present a fire hazard.

The first 90° elbow on a top direct vent appliance
MUST be a NAVP90ST; this starter elbow includes
a deflector.

A vinyl soffit shield (VSS2) should be installed if a
cap is within 30 of a vinyl soffit.

c. Installing the Interior Wall Shield (WS6)
Frame a hole in a combustible wall or an interior
wall shield, as shown in Figure 10, whenever a
wall is penetrated. This shield maintains
minimum clearances and prevents cold air
in iltration.
Secure the wall shield to the raming as shown
in Figures 11 and 12.
The termination cap height must meet all local
and national codes and not be easily blocked or
obstructed.
I the material being penetrated is o
noncombustible materials, a 9 diameter hole is
acceptable.
d. Termination
Vent termination must not be recessed in the wall or siding. Siding may be brought to the edge o the cap base.
Install the cap as shown in Figure 12. Cap pipe sections should overlap the vent pipe by 1½ inches. Caulk
outside edges o cap.
Local codes may require the installation o a shield (CS) which prevents the cap rom accidentally touching
anything or anyone.
Figure 13 illustrates cap locations prescribed by current ANSI Z273. and CAN/CGA-B 49 Installation Codes.

d. Firestop Spacer/Chimney Installation
Frame an opening and install a irestop spacer
(NAFS6) whenever the vent penetrates a ceiling/
loor area, as shown in Figure 18. Frame the
opening with the same sized lumber as used in
the ceiling/ loor joists. Unless the lue is o set,
the hole should be directly above the appliance.
DO NOT pack insulation around the chimney.
e. Chase/Termination Installation
Figures 19 and 20, and Table 1 speci y minimum
chimney heights or various pitched roo s.
These chimney heights are necessary or sa ety
and do not ensure dra t- ree operation. Trees,
buildings, adjoining roo lines, adverse
conditions, etc. may create a need or a taller
chimney should down dra ting occur.
f. Installing the Vertical Termination Cap
To install the NAVP-TV, slide the inner collar o
the cap over the inner vent and place the outer
collar o the cap over the outer vent. Secure with
three screws into the outer vent.

Note: Make sure that the seams are NOT
aligned in order to prevent unintentional

3. ASSEMBLING THE VENT SECTIONS
a. Attaching the Venting to the Appliance
To attach the irst vent pipe section to the appliance
collars, simply slide the lared end o the inner
lue o the vent section over the inner collar on the
appliance. At the same time, insert the outer lue
into the outer collar on the appliance. Push the
vent section into the appliance collar until all the
lances have snapped into place. Tug slightly on
the vent to con irm it has completely locked in
place.
b. Assembling Vent Sections
) Start the lared inner lue o section A over the
inner lue o section B.
2) Insert the outer lue o section A into the outer
lue o section B. See Figure 21.
Once both inner and outer lues are started,
press section A into section B irmly until
all lances have snapped into place. Tug
slightly on section A to con irm it has
completely locked into place. See Figure22.
c. Assembling Minimum Installation (MI)
Sections (not required for all installations)
MI sections are non-unitized so that they can be
cut to a certain length. To use these sections, they
must be cut to length rom the non-expanded end.
See Figure 23. They can then be attached by irst
connecting the expanded end o the MI inner lue
with the inner lue rom the adjacent vent section
and securing with three screws. The expanded
portion o the MI inner lue must overlap completely
with the untreated end o the adjacent vent section.
The outer lue can then be inserted into the
adjacent outer lue expanded end and attached to
the next vent section with three screws. The other
end o the MI vent section can then be attached by
itting a snap lock section to it and snapping it
together as normal.

F. UTILITIES
1. HIGH ALTITUDE INSTALLATION
For U.S. installation, appliances are tested and approved or elevations rom 0-2000 eet. When installing this appliance
at an elevation above 2000 eet, National Fuel Gas Codes require a decrease o the input rating by changing the
existing burner ori ice to a smaller size. Input should be reduced 4% or each 1000 eet above sea level. Check with
the local gas utility or proper ori ice size identi ication. Ori ices are available rom your Heatilator distributor.
For Canada, appliances are certi ied or elevations rom 0-4500 eet. When installing this appliance at an elevation
between 0-4500 eet in Canada, the input rating does not need to be reduced. When installing this appliance at an
elevation above 4500 eet in Canada, check with local authorities.
2. GAS LINE CONNECTION
The appliance is provided with a stainless steel lexible connector and manual shuto valve. See Figure 26. The
incoming gas line should be piped into the valve compartment and connected to the 1/2 FIP connection provided on
the manual shuto valve. All connections must be tightened and checked or leaks with a soap and water solution
or leak detector. Bleed the gas line to extract any air that may have been trapped inside the pipe. See Figure 27 to
connect the gas line. Gas connections may also be made by taking out the knockout in the bottom pan to allow
connection through the bottom o the appliance.
d. Assembling the Slip Sections
Slip sections should be snapped into the irst
mating piece, then expanded to their desired
length, making sure that a 1.5 overlap is
maintained between the two sections o the slip
section. The sections need to be secured by
driving two screws through the overlapping
portions o the vent. See Figure 24. This will
secure the slip section to the desired length and
prevent it rom separating. The slip section can
then be attached to the next section o vent.
e. Disassembling Vent Sections
(only if necessary)
To disassemble any two pieces o pipe, rotate
either section so that the seams on both pipe
sections are aligned as shown in Figure 25. They
can then be care ully pulled apart.

Gas Line
Note: The appliance and its manual shuto valve
must be disconnected rom the gas supply piping
system during any pressure testing o that system at
test pressures in excess o 1/2 psi (3.5 kPa). The
appliance must be isolated rom the gas supply
piping system by closing its manual shuto valve
during any pressure testing o the gas supply piping
system at test pressures equal to or less than 1/2
psi (3.5 kPa).
3. GAS PRESSURE
A pressure tap is included on the ront ace o the standing pilot gas control valve.
Table 2 shows optimum gas pressure in ormation.

Z223. -latest edition, AppendixF.

4. CONVERSION TO PROPANE GAS (IF APPLICABLE)
This appliance is equipped or natural gas. In the event your appliance must be converted to propane, a conversion
kit is supplied to allow that to be done. The conversion should only be done by a quali ied technician using these
Hearth & Home Technologies speci ied and approved parts. See Figure 28.
CONVERSION STEPS:
Step 1
Open the control access panel so you can observe
the control area o the gas appliance. See Figure 29.
Step 2
Turn off the gas and electrical power.
a. To turn o the gas and locate the manual shuto
valve in the control area in the bottom o the
appliance, turn the manual shuto valve so it is
perpendicular to the gas line. See Figure 30.
b. I electricity has been brought to the appliance or
a an or remote control, shut o all power by
turning o the appropriate circuit breaker or
removing the use in the electrical panel.

Step 3
a. Using the regulator replacement kit, ollow the instructions (Steps 1-3) that come with the kit. A ter completion
o Step 3 rom the kits instructions, return to these instructions.
b. Remove the tamper-proo cover screw rom the natural gas regulator (using snap ring pliers) and install the
cover screw onto the propane gas regulator.
Step 4
a. Removing Logs
Follow the instructions or removing the glass, screen and logs on page 27.
b. Removing the Burner
Using a phillips screwdriver, remove the screws rom each corner o the burner. Care ully pull the burner to the
le t, o o the burner ori ice underneath. Set the burner aside.
Step 5
a. Pilot Orifice
Loosen and remove the screws that hold the pilot bracket to the pilot assembly ( our screws in all). Remove the
pilot bracket. Using a 1/2 wrench, loosen and separate the pilot nut rom the pilot assembly. See Figure 32. The
aluminum pilot may have to be bent slightly to separate the parts. Replace the natural gas pilot tube ori ice
(which will either have come out with the pilot nut or will be in the pilot assembly and have to be pulled out) with
the LP pilot ori ice supplied with the conversion kit. With the new ori ice in place, tighten the pilot nut to the pilot
assembly and reattach the pilot bracket to the pilot assembly and to the seal plate.

b. Burner Orifice
Completely loosen the nut securing the ori ice
with a 5/8 wrench (re er to Figure 33). Remove
the ori ice and replace it with the propane ori ice.
Tighten the nut.
c. To adjust the air shutter at the base o the burner
tube/neck, loosen the 1/4 screw using either a
1/4 nut driver or stubby screwdriver. Slide the
shutter ully open and secure. See Figure 33.

d. Return the burner to its position on the ori ice
and secure it with our screws, one at each corner.
Test or leaks between the valve and burner with
the burner lit as indicated in Step6.
Step 6 - Leak Test
a. This is important! Propane (LP) gas is heavy. I
there is an incomplete gas line connection the
gas could leak and settle to the lowest point and
then accumulate. Such a situation could be
hazardous. Do not proceed until all connections
are checked and any leaks eliminated!
b. Turn on the gas.
c. Test all gas connections or possible leaks by
using a soap/water solution or Sni er (turn on
and calibrate the Sni er, then place the sensor
end o the sni er within 1/2 o each connection).
I the soap/water solution or Sni er indicates there
is a leak, tighten and seal the connection and
then retest.
d. Turn the position indicator to the PILOT position
and depress. Press the push button ignitor and
light the sa ety pilot. Continue holding the position
indicator in the depressed position until the pilot
stays lit (approximately 45 seconds). Test or leaks
at the pilot assembly using one o the methods in
Step 6c.
e. Turn the position indicator to the ON position
and test or leaks at the valve and the burner ori ice
using one o the methods in Step 6c.
Step 7 - Checking the Pressure
a. The gas input, inlet gas supply pressure and
mani old pressure must be as indicated on the
rating label located in the control area o the
appliance. Any other input, inlet pressure or
manifold pressure could cause your gas
appliance to operate other than intended and
could cause serious injury or property damage.
b. Inlet Pressure
Veri y that the gas valve is set at the PILOT
position. Veri y the inlet gas supply pressure by
loosening the screw located inside the inlet
pressure tap. See Figure 34. Connect a
Manometer to the inlet pressure tap by pushing
the Manometer hose over the pressure tap. Turn
the valve to the ON position and turn the burner
on (with wall switch, remote, etc.). I the inlet gas
pressure is incorrect, do not adjust without
speci ic approval and instruction rom the gas
supplier. Changing the inlet pressure may a ect
other appliances in the residence. When
inished, return the valve to the PILOT position,
disconnect the Manometer and tighten the inlet
pressure tap screw.

c. Outlet Pressure
Veri y that the gas valve is set at the PILOT
position. Veri y the mani old pressure by
loosening the screw located inside the outlet
pressure tap. See Figure 34. Connect a
Manometer to the outlet pressure tab by pushing
the Manometer hose over the pressure tap. Turn
the valve to the ON position, ignite the
appliance, and ensure that the pressure is
between 3 and 4 water column (optimum
pressure is 3.5 WC) or natural gas and

Step 9 - Attaching the Labels
a. The installer conversion label and valve
manu acturer labels must be completed and
installed by the individual completing the
conversion. This must be finished or the
conversion is not complete. See Figures 35-37.
b. To ill out the installer conversion label, ollow the
example in Figure 35. A ter illing out the label,
clean an area near the existing rating label and
attach.
Attach the valve manufacturer conversion
labels as indicated in Figure 37.

gas pressure is incorrect, contact the gas
supplier or Heatilator Technical Services. When
inished, turn the valve back to the PILOT
position, turn o the burner, disconnect the
Manometer and tighten the outlet pressure tap
screw.
Step 8 - Resetting the Appliance
a. Replace the logs as shown on page 27.
b. Replace the glass and screen as shown on
page27.
5. WIRING
a. Wall Switch Wiring
The installer shall supply a UL-listed or in
Canada, a CSA-listed wall switch. This appliance
was tested with eighteen eet o UL listed 18 ga.
Type CL2 105°C, two conductor thermostat wire.
I other wiring materials are used they shall
comply with local codes. In the absence o local
codes, they shall comply with the National
Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70-latest edition or
Canadian Electrical Code CSA C22. .
b. Standing Pilot Ignition
A wiring diagram is shown in Figure 38. You must
wire or the an kit supplied with this appliance at
installation to avoid reconstruction.

WARNING!
This appliance DOES NOT require a 0V AC supply
for operation. Connecting the appliance/wall switch
to a 0V AC supply will cause the appliance to
malfunction and destroy the valve and thermopile.
c. Junction Box Wiring
We recommend you operate the two outlets on
separate circuits. This allows independent
operation o the appliance and an. Independent
operation is obtained by using minimum 14-3 with
ground Romex and separating the two outlets by
breaking out the tab as shown in Figure39

6. JUNCTION BOX INSTALLATION
INSTRUCTIONS
a. Remove the junction box assembly rom the valve
compartment.
b. I the box is being wired rom the OUTSIDE o the
appliance:
) Loosen two screws on the Romex connector,
eed the necessary length o wire through
the connector and tighten the screws.
2) Make all necessary wire connections to the
receptacle and assemble the receptacle and
cover to the junction box.
3) Attach the junction box assembly to the
outside o the appliance with the two screws
provided.
c. I the box is being wired rom the INSIDE o the
appliance:
) Pull the electrical wires rom outside the
appliance through this opening into the valve
compartment.
2) Loosen the two screws on the Romex
connector, eed the necessary length o wire
through the connector and tighten the screws.
3) Make all necessary wire connections to the
receptacle and assemble the receptacle and
cover to the junction box.
4) Attach the junction box assembly to the inside
o the appliance with the two screws
provided.
d. I the box is not to be wired at the time o appliance
installation, assemble the receptacle and cover
to the box and install on the inside o the
appliance.
