togetherwith detailsof recommended proceduresforthe replacementofparts.In
particular,theManualisdirectedtowardsthetechnicaleducationalenvironmentwhere
the machineis subjectedto continualuseby differentoperatorswhoarenotalways
familiarwithnormal machine-careprocedures.

GOODOPERATING PROCEDURES
1/ Donotresttoolsonthebedorslideways
2/ Keepthebedandslidescleanandfreefromswarfandmoisture
3/ Alwayscleanthespindlenoseand matingcomponentbeforemounting
4/ DoNOTleavethekeyinthelathechuck
5/ Whenremovingchucksfromthespindle, engagethebackgeartolockthespindle.
If thechuckistight,usea barbetweenthejawswithanevenpressuretoloosen.
6/ DoNOTengagegearswhilstthemachineisrunning.

LUBRICATION
The oiling pointsare illustratedonthe photographfromthe "TextBookof Turning"
reproducedbelow.Wheninregularuse,allpointsshouldbeoileddailywitha fewdrops
andthe excesswipedoff.

Oil shouldalsobe appliedatthesame intervaltothebed ways,the cross slideand
compoundrestdovetails,thetailstockbarrel,theleadscrewthreadsandthebackgear
andchangegearteeth.Every5 or6 days,oilshouldalsobeappliedtothecountershaft
yoke pivot pointsandthebelttensioning eccentricshaft.

CHECKSANDADJUSTMENTS
The following adjustments shouldbe checked periodicallytoensure troublefree
operations:—
1/ BeltTension
Themotorand drive beltsshouldbechecked regularlyforcorrecttensioning.The
belt tensionis correctlysetwhena light finger pressuremidwaybetweenthe
pulleyswillgive a deflectionof10-13mm.Thedrivebelttensionisadjustedbythe
knobattherearofthedriveunit.Themotorbelttensionisadjustedbyslackening
themotorbasestrapandre-clampinginthecorrectposition.
2/ BackGearTensioningScrew
This screwis locatedinthe frontarmofthe headstockabovethebackgear
eccentric.Itshouldbesetsothatthereissufficientresistancetothemovementof
thebackgear leverto preventits movingoutofmeshwheninuse.A 5/32A/F
hexagonkeyisrequiredforthisoperation.
3/ RearSaddleKeepPlate
Two hexagonheadscrewswithspringwashersattachthiskeepplatetotherearof
the saddle.The correctsettingforthiskeep plateis obtainedbytighteningboth
screwsandthenbackingeachoffbyhalfa turn.
4/ FrontSaddleLockScrew
Thisshouldbefingertightfornormaluseandonlytightenedwhenthesaddleisto
be locked.
5/ TailstockClampBolt
Thisshouldbesettogivea clampingpositionwiththehandleatabout60°fromthe
horizontal.Toadjust,removethetailstockfromthebedandresetthepositionofthe
boltintheclampnut.
6/ CrossSlideandCompoundRestGibs
Thegibsareadjustedusingthegibspanner{DrawingM6— AppendixB)andscrew
driver.Withthescrewdriverinthegibscrew, slackenthelocknut,adjustthegib
screwandre-tighteneachlocknutinturn.Whenproperlyset,theslideshouldmove
smoothlywithnoslack.
7/ FasteningScrews
To prevent problems arisingfrom screwsand componentsworkingloose, regular
tighteningofthefollowingscrewsshouldbemadeevery3 months:—

Windtheslidebackasfaraspossible.Usea "C"spannertoremovethecompound
restscrewassembly.
Loosenthenutlockingscrewandremovethenut
Insertthenewnut
Replacethecompoundrestscrewassembly
Windtheslidefullyforward
Backoffoneturnandtightenthelockingscrew
CrossFeedorCompoundRestScrew
(Thesameprocedurecanbeusedtoeliminatewearonanexistingscrew)
The Screw Assemblyis removedasone unit,
usinga "C"spanner(DrawingM6- AppendixB)
andthen taken apart. Ifnew partsare being
fitted,thentheyare substitutedfortheworn
parts.
When re-assemblinga shim washer"A"ofapp.
0.03mm (0.0012")is placed betweenthe
graduated collarandthefaceofthe bushing.
Thescrewis pushedhardintothebushing,the
graduated collar pushedhard againsttheshim
washerand securedwiththelock screw"B".
Theshankofthescrewisthengrippedina 3 jaw
chuckina latheanda lightcuttakenacrossthe
faceof"C".Theshimisthen removedandthe
unitre-assembledandreplaced.
When another latheisnot availableto carryoutthis operationontheCrossFeed
Screw, clampthe crossslidebytighteningonegibscrewandusethe compound
restsetat90°totakethefacingcut.WhenoperatingontheCompoundRestScrew,
clampthatslidebytighteningonegibscrew.

ProcedureforremovingandreplacingHeadstockSpindleforreplacinganypart
requiringthisoperation
Thisisthe preferred procedureusingthespindlepullerdetailsofwhicharegiven
onDrawingsM4andM5inAppendix"B".
An alternativemethodisgivenintheTextBookofTurning.
Thefrontandrearbearingcapsareremovedandthetake-upnutunscrewedusing
the"C"spannerillustratedon DrawingM6.
To removethe spindle,placethe pullerin positionas showninDrawingM1and
tightenthepullernut(2)topullthespindleclearoftherearbearingconeandbull
gear.Thepullernutisthenremovedandthespindlecompletelywithdrawn.
To replacethespindle,insertitthroughthebullgearandconepulley,liningupthe
bullgearkeyway. PositionthepullerasshowninDrawingM2andtightenthepuller
nut(2)topullthe spindle throughthebull gear.Thenutandspacerarethen
removedandthespacingcollarplacedonthespindleandturneduntilthekeyway
springengagesinthekeyway.
TherearbearingisthenpulledonasshowninDrawingM3.
Finally,thefrontandrear bearingcapsare replacedandthetakenutscrewedon
andtightenedtogivetherecommendedpreloadof0.2 Newtonmetresandthelock
screwtightened.
ProcedureforremovingandreplacingtheBackGearShaftforreplacinganypart
requiringthisoperation.ReferDrawingA1- Appendix A
Slackenoffthebackgear tension screw (138)and removethebackgear lever
adjustingscrew(141).(Itisadvisabletoloosenthenut(142)justsufficientlytofree
the screwandthentakethetwooffasoneunittogivea guidetothe correct
positioningwhen re-assembling). Driveoutspringpin(135)and removetheback
gearlever(136)togetherwiththebackgearshaft(133).
To re-assemble,insertthebackgearleverandshaft,andreplacethespringpin.The
adjustingscrewandnutarethenreplacedandlockedinpositiontogivethecorrect
gearbacklashandthetensionscrewre-set.
Procedureforfittinga beltoverthecountershaft.DrawingA36- Appendix A
(Early model machineshada one pieceyokeandthe procedureinthiscaseis
outlinedintheTextBookofTurning)
Firstly removethe DrivePulley(216), loosenthe lockingscrew(226)andtapthe
pivotshaft(225)outtowardsthetailstockuntilitclearstheleft-handyokesection.
Removethe clampingscrew(204)and swingthe left-handyoke section(209)
forwarduntilitisabovethecountershaft(211).Thebeltmaythenbefittedoverthe
cone pulley (212)
Re-assemblebyswingingtheyokesectionbackintoposition,replacingtheclamping
screw, tapping the pivotshaftbackinto position, lockingitwiththescrewand
replacingthedrivingpulley.
