WARNING: FOR OUTDOOR USE ONLY
!
• THOROUGHLY READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLATION, OPERATION AND
MAINTENANCE BEFORE INSTALLING OR SERVICING THIS EQUIPMENT.
• FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN A FIRE WHICH
COULD CAUSE PROPERTY DAMAGE, PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.
Than you for your purchasing one of The Holland Grill
Company’s new fire pits. We hope that you will enjoy this durable
product for many years. Inside are a few details you should ta e
note of before use.
HG-2
1. FIND THE RIGHT SPOT
Station your pit on a level stone, concrete, or brick
surface that's at least 10 feet from your house, trees,
and anything flammable. We do not recommend placing
your fire pit directly on the ground for stability reasons.
DO NOT use the fire pit on a wood deck, or
under an enclosed porch. The placement of your
fire pit is the most important safety consideration.
Choose an open area of your yard that is both solid and
level. Never attempt to put the fire pit in an enclosed
space, or under a roof line, as this poses both a fire
hazard and problems with ventilation. Keep the fire pit
away from areas with overhanging trees, buildings or
other flammable and combustible materials. As a rule,
position the fire pit at least 10 to 20 feet from any nearby
trees or shrubs. Keep the same distance away from
buildings and roof lines. A fire pit should never be so
close to a tree that flames or sparks could reach the
leaves or branches. Should the tree catch on fire, other
buildings, homes and plants in vicinity are in danger of
catching fire as well. Draw a 10 to 20 foot imaginary
circle around the outside of the area where you want to
place your fire pit, and ensure the space is open and
free of trees and plants.
Take wind into consideration when deciding placement
of the fire pit. Burning embers can be blown out of the
fire pit, so choose a protected area if you are going with
wood as your fuel source. Windy conditions can blow
sparks far from your pit and start a fire, so if you live in
a windy area, place your pit in a place that is protected
from the wind.
2. USE GOOD FUEL
Always burn dry, seasoned wood that was cut at least six
months earlier. To keep sparks from flying, make sure
logs are no longer than three-quarters of the pit's length
(about 20 inches for the Caldera and about 14 inches for
the esta). Do not overload the fire pit with
wood. The fire pit will easily handle 1 cubic foot of
wood stacked safely. This is comparable to the amount
sold in bundles at your local home improvement stores.
To begin use a small amount of wood and add as the
flames increase. Over time you will find your ideal
wood load.
You can also use charcoal. The Caldera will hold a
10 lb. bag easily the esta will handle about 6 lbs.
3. START THE FLAMES SAFELY
Before lighting a fire, always make sure your fire pit and
the surrounding areas are free from flammable debris
and dry leaves. If you have not cleaned your fire pit
since your last usage, now is a good time to empty the
ashes and clean the fire bowl in preparation for your
next backyard fire. Before using your fire pit be sure to
have your fire-extinguishing supplies nearby and ready
for quick use.
Never use lighter fluid, gas, or kerosene to
light a fire. Never use gasoline to start a fire or pour
it on a fire that has already been lit. apor can explode,
and the fire can travel up the stream so that the
container bursts into flame.
4. HAVE A DOUSER HANDY
Keep a bucket of sand, a fire extinguisher, or a garden
hose nearby in case things get too hot to handle.
. AFTER THE FIRE IS
BURNING
Monitor any children’s activities around the
pit at all times. Never leave them alone around a
fire. Fire pits are no fun if you cannot gather around
SAFELY ENJOY YOUR NEW FIRE PIT
them watching the flames and enjoying the warmth while
visiting with guests, but sitting too close to the fire can
lead to your guests or your furniture being harmed.
Even the best tended fires have flying sparks that can
burn your guests or the fabric of your favorite patio
furniture cushions, so keep your seating options a
safe distance from the flames.
Never Leave Your Fire Unattended. If you
plan to invite guests over for backyard entertaining that
includes gathering around the fire, make your fire pit a
central focus of the party.
You do not want to leave your fire burning while you
and your guests wander inside to watch a movie or eat
dinner, so set up an outdoor dining room or put your
Holland Grill close by, to keep the party close enough to
your pit for you to keep an eye on it. If you need to leave
the area to prepare food or freshen up your guests’
drinks, make sure to leave a responsible adult in charge
of the fire while you are away. If your plans for the
evening including roasting marshmallows or hot dogs
with your guests make sure you use appropriate forks
or skewers that are designed for use over an open flame.
Outdoor cookware specifically designed for use with fire
pits or campfires is a safer option that is usually made
with long metal prongs and wood handles. This keeps
your hands safely away from the fire while roasting
your tasty treats.
6. SNUFF OUT FLAMES
When you’re finished with your fire, make sure to
extinguish it completely.
At the end of the event, extinguish your fire before you
retire for the night. It may be tempting to just let it burn
out while you say good night to guests or prepare for
bed, but avoid unnecessary risk that could result in a
call to 911 in the middle of the night. Simply dowsing
the flames and leaving your fire to die out can result in
flare-ups later if left unattended. To properly extinguish a
fire, allow it to burn down and use the majority of the fuel
still in the fire bowl. Then spread the ashes out in the fire
bowl to allow them to cool down. Once your ashes have
cooled, slowly pour sand over the ashes to make sure
there are no hidden embers still burning. It is not
recommended that you use water to
extinguish the fire unless it is an emergency
situation. Water on the hot metal can induce stresses
that may permanently warp the fire pit.
Remember that the metal gets hot. Let it cool thoroughly
before attempting to handle the fire pit.
7. CLEANING
AND OTHER DETAILS
The Caldera and the esta are made of three distinct
pieces: the stainless steel pit, the aluminized steel base,
and the stainless ash tray. They both are easily disas-
sembled. Simply lift the pit off of the stand (after it has
cooled down). This makes it simple to wash the pit out
with a hose. Do not worry about the bluish or brownish
stain on the pit after use. This is a natural process
stainless steel undergoes when subjected to heat. This is
not a sign of rust, nor is it a sign of failure of the material.
It is simply the way the metal responds to heating and is
nothing to worry about. You may be able to remove
some discoloration with mild abrasive soap, but the
reality of it is that metal is now showing the interesting
colors of heat treated steel.
