Operating Safety Precautions
WARNINGS for Operation
Keep your hands and fingers away from the tanks while turning the power on. The melt
tanks are heated to a high temperature of about 200 degrees Celsius. The melt tank will
remain hot for a while even after the power switch has been turn to Off. Keep your hands
and fingers away from the tanks until the tanks cool off. Otherwise, you may burn yourself.
Toxic gases may be generated when PUR is used. Be absolutely sure to install a smoke
extractor or similar device, and ventilate. Wear the protectors recommended by PUR
manufacturers when cleaning the PUR tank.
Work alone when you operate the machine.
Letting someone else operate the machine may cause severe personal injury.
Keep your hands and fingers off the carriage clamp while the carriage clamp is moving.
Otherwise moving carriage clamp can cause severe personal injury.
Do not touch the milling cutter and notching cutter with bare hands. Otherwise, these
may cause severe personal injury.
Turn off the power switch before resetting the circuit breakers. Otherwise, the machine
may start suddenly, causing severe personal injury.
Do not remove or bypass any safety features. Moving parts can cause severe personal
injury.
Do not use of glue with a flash point of below 210 degrees Celsius (EVA) or 180
degrees Celsius (PUR).
CAUTIONS for Operation
When the milling guide and the nipper are set narrower than the carriage clamp width,
do not move the carriage clamps. Otherwise, the lower part of a carriage clamp may hit
the guide and be damaged.
Do not insert a book block into a carriage clamp and run the machine until finishing a
changeover. Otherwise, the machine may be damaged.
Do not rotate the application roller if the glue has not melted completely. Otherwise, the
machine may be damaged.
When the optional weekly timer is used, the glue tanks will heat up at pre-set times. If you
are using this feature, check the machine to be sure the tanks can be heated safely.
After turning the Power switch off, wait ten seconds before turning it on again. Other-
wise, the circuit board may be damaged.
Close the carriage clamp before turning the clamp manually. Otherwise, the clamp may
collide with other parts.

IV
WARNINGS for Maintenance
Turn off the power switch before beginning any maintenance operation. A sudden acci-
dental start of the machine can cause severe personal injury.
Turn off the power switch before removing the cause of a jam. The machine may start
suddenly, causing severe personal injury.
Work carefully when your hands are inside the machine, and keep them away from any
moving parts.
CAUTIONS for Maintenance
Use only the recommended lubrication oil and grease. Other kinds of oil or grease may
reduce the life of the machine or cause damage.
Do not use metal spatulas to clean the nipper. These will scratch the nipper, causing the
binding quality to deteriorate.
The PUR tank is coated with Teflon. The service life of the tank will be shortened If a
hard object is used during cleaning, resulting in scratches on the tank. Use the acces-
sory scraper for cleaning the PUR tank.
WARNINGS for Installation
Turn off the main power or circuit breaker in the building before connecting the power
cord to the machine. High voltage electricity can cause severe personal injury.
CAUTIONS for Installation
Be sure to install the setting plates to keep the machine level. Otherwise, the machine
can be moved by vibration. The binding quality may deteriorate, or the machine may be
damaged.
BQ-470/BQ-470D weighs approximately 2.0t. Transport and install the machine safely,
and keep the weight of the machine in mind.
Install the machine correctly, referring to the installation instructions in the operation
manual before starting the machine. Otherwise, the binding quality cannot be guaran-
teed.
Be sure to attach the cables, hoses, tubes in the areas where a foot cannot be caught.

the spine of each book block
is cut off between the milling
cutter and the upper knife.
Notching Cutter
These cut slots in the spine
of the book block.
Cutter Base
For PUR
Cutter Base
Chip Cutter
This cuts the spine of each
book block to create a saw-
toothed edge. It is used to
increase the surface area of
the spine and bring out the
fibers in the paper. (It can also
be used with EVA.)
Spacers
One spacer is equivalent to
0.1 mm (0.004"). The
machine is provided with four
spacers when it is shipped
from the factory.
Milling Cutter
This rotates clockwise, and
the spine of each book block
is cut off between the milling
cutter and the upper knife.

Screw
Use this screw to make an adjustment if you want
to change just the height of the scraper roller.
Second Application Roller
This is used to apply glue to the
spines of the book blocks. The
thickness of the glue on the spine
can be changed by changing the
height of this roller.
Oil Cup
This lubricates the chain used to
rotate the rollers.
Glue Tray
This collects any side glue or spine glue
which has overflowed from the tank.
First Wiper

Unlike with EVA, when the PUR glue is to be
replaced, all the glue remaining in the tank must
be removed. If any glue is left behind, it may find
its way into the gaps between the wipers and the
application rollers and cause unevenness in the
amount of glue on the roller. For this reason, the
tank for PUR is constructed in such a way that
the rollers can be lifted to make the tank easier to
clean.
