Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Precautions
Electrostatic charges can damage the integrated circuits on printed circuit boards. To prevent such
damage from occurring, observe the following precautions when unpacking and installing the board.
•Stand on a static–free mat.
•Wear a static strap to ensure that any accumulated electrostatic charge discharges from your body
to ground.
•Connect all equipment together, including the static–free mat, static straps, routing nodes, and
peripheral units.
•Keep uninstalled printed circuit boards in their protective antistatic bags.
•Once you have removed the printed circuit boards from their protective antistatic bags, handle
them by their edges.

General Information
This chapter describes the general features and gives an overview of the B Class workstation.
Features
Hewlett–Packard’s Model B132L/B160L Workstations are based on a PA7300 central processing unit
(CPU) that provides a variety of interfaces, graphics, and mass storage.
The following table lists the features of the Model B132L/B160L workstations.

Memory
Standard memory is 32 MB of 60 ns 4 Mbit or 16 Mbit DRAMs. 32 MB is the minimum required for
the HP–UX operating system. Each workstation has 8 memory slots, labeled 0A, 0B through 2A, 2B.
There are several possible memory configurations:all 32 MB to 96 MB installed in pairs of
16 MB SIMM cards; or, 128 MB to 384 MB installed in pairs of 64 MB SIMM cards. The SIMM
pairs may be mixed for memory sizes between 32MB and 384MB, in all configurations memory
SIMMS must be installed in pairs of equal size.
Memory upgrades include:
HP A3026A 32 MB DRAM Upgrade, two 16 MB DRAM boards.
HP A3027A 128 MB DRAM Upgrade, two 64 MB DRAM boards.
Internal Storage Devices
The B132L/B160L workstation can have up to two fixed disk drives, one removable media drive
(DDS–tape or CD–ROM), and a floppy drive.

The B132L/B160L workstation comes with built–in 8–bit color and high resolution graphics. The
supported monitors are:
A4330A 17–inch, multimode, 1280x1024 color monitor
A4331A 20–inch, multimode, 1280x1024 color monitor
AxxxxA 21–inch, multimode, 1600x1200 color monitor
The supported graphics boards are:
•HP VISUALIZE 24Z or 24–plane graphics

shown in Figures 1–1 and 1–2. Chapter 5 lists the pinouts of these external connectors.

Audio Interfaces
The Model B132L/B160L workstation has audio input and output capability through external input
and output connectors on the rear panel, Headphones (headphone–out) and Microphone
(Microphone–in) connectors on the front panel plus a built–in speaker. The rear panel contains the
Line–IN (Stereo line–in) and Mic , and Audio OUT (Stereo line–out) and Headphones connectors.
Additional controls for audio include a MUTE button and a VOLUME CONTROL knob located on
the front panel.
The audio connectors are standard audio mini–jacks. Hewlett–Packard recommends using
gold–plated plugs available through audio retailers for best quality recording and playback through
the external connectors. The following is a summary of the workstation audio features:

The PS/2 connectors provide an interface for the PS/2 style keyboard and mouse to the system.
HP Parallel I/O Interface
The 25–pin HP Parallel I/O interface uses Centronics interface protocols to support peripheral
devices such as printers and plotters. Consult the documentation that accompanies each peripheral
device for specific information concerning its use.

Network Interface
The Model B132L/B160L has built–in ThickNet LAN AUI and TP (Twisted Pair) connectors for the
802.3 (ETHERNET) network. Connections to ThinLAN networks require an external transceiver.
Your workstation will autoselect the correct network setting.
The IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN) circuit provides both the AUI interface for
conventional coaxial Ethernet and a direct interface to a twisted pair (TP) 10BASE–T network. Only
one interface can be used at a time, the system auto–selects the correct port that is being used.
Ethernet is a 10 Mbit/s packet–switched serial interface employing Carrier Sense Multiple
Access/Collision Detection (CSMA/CD). Table 1–3 lists the supported LAN adapters and other
network devices.

Serial I/O Interfaces
The Serial I/O (SIO) ports on the B132L/B160L accept a variety of pointing devices or peripheral
devices. Peripheral devices include printers, plotters, modems, and scanners. Consult the
documentation that accompanies each peripheral device for specific information concerning its use.
The SIO ports are programmable, allowing the setting of such functions as bit rate, character length,
parity, and stop bits. SIO Ports are used as interfaces for serial asynchronous devices to the CPU. The
ports operate at up to a 460.8 K baud rate.
Chapter 5 lists the SIO connector pin listings. The serial connectors are 9–pin D–sub connectors.
Signal names are those specified in the EIA RS–232 standard.

Small Computer Systems (SCSI) Interface
Use the SCSI connectors to connect external SCSI devices such as DDS–format tape drives and
CD–ROM drives. Consult the documentation that accompanies each SCSI device for specific
information concerning its use. Refer to Appendix C of the B Class Owner’s Guide for information
about connecting SCSI devices to the workstation.
Single–Ended (SE) SCSI
The built–in SE SCSI port is implemented using an NCR710 macrocell inside the I/O ASIC chip.
This 8–bit single ended implementation is compatible with the current 700 series products and
supports 5 MB/sec data transfer rates.
The SE SCSI bus is terminated to 3.3 volts through 127kΩresistors on the CPU board. Terminators
must be removed or disabled from internal devices. If an external device is used an active terminator
must be used on the drive at the end of the SE SCSI chain.
The external SE SCSI connector must always have a terminator when no external devices are
connected.
Fast Wide (FW) SCSI (Optional)
Fast Wide SCSI is an extension to the existing 8–bit, single–ended SCSI. “Fast” indicates that
signals on the SCSI bus are differentially driven and terminated and capable of a 10 MHz clock rate.
“Wide” indicates that there are 16 data bits on the SCSI bus.
The FW SCSI bus is terminated to 3.3 volts through 127kΩresistors on the FW SCSI controller
board. Terminators must be removed or disabled from internal devices. If an external device is used
an active terminator must be used on the drive at the end of the FW SCSI chain.
The external FW SCSI connector must always have a terminator when no external devices are
connected.
The Fast Wide SCSI bus is specified at a peak synchronous transfer rate of 20 MB/sec. The
architecture of the Fast Wide SCSI port on the workstation has been designed to allow a 20 MB/sec
sustained transfer rate for long data streams.

Hardware Architecture
The Model B132L/B160L is a desktop or desk–side system designed to be easy to operate and
upgrade. The features in this package are designed for user access to the majority of system
upgradeable parts (disks, memory SIMMs, and processors) by removing the main tray.
Figure 1–3 shows the front view of the system. There is a Power LED that indicates that the system
is on when lit and LEDs that inform the user of the system’s status. In case of failure the status LEDs
indicate a failure code.

Operating System
HP–UX
HP–UX 10.2 is supported on the Model B132L/B160L workstations. HP–UX is booted from an
internal hard disk drive factory installed with Instant Ignition. HP–UX can also be installed from
external DDS or CD–ROM drives. If the workstation is a client on a LAN, HP–UX can be booted
over the LAN. Table 1–4 lists the HP–UX operating systems and languages for the workstation.
