Before Starting
Read this section before replacing any components.
WARNING For your safety, never remove the PC’s cover without first removing
the power cord from the power outlet and any connection to a
telecommunication network. Always replace the cover before
switching the PC on again.
CAUTION Static electricity can damage electronic components.
Turn all equipment OFF. Don’t let your clothes touch the accessory.
To equalize the static electricity, rest the accessory bag on top of the PC while
you are removing the accessory from the bag. Handle the accessory as little as
possible and with care.
WARNING There is a danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly installed. For
your safety, never attempt to recharge, disassemble, or burn the old
battery. Replace the battery only with the same or equivalent type
recommended by the manufacturer. The battery in this PC is a lithium
battery which does not contain heavy metals, nevertheless, in order to
protect the environment, do not dispose of batteries in household
waste. Please return used batteries to the shop from which you bought
them, or to the dealer from which you purchased your PC, or to HP, so
that they can either be recycled or disposed of in an environmentally
sound way. Returned used batteries will be accepted free of charge.

Removing the Cover
1Switch off the monitor and PC, disconnect all power cords and any
telecommunication cables.
2Desktop
aPress the central latch down to release the front panel.
bRemove the front panel by pressing the two tabs down, pivoting
the front panel downward, and lifting it off.
cIf necessary, unlock the cover using the key provided with the PC.
dPlacing your hands on the sides of the cover, push the cover
forward by about 2 cm (about 1 inch) and lift it off.
Minitower
aIf necessary, unlock the cover using the key provided with the PC.
bLift the two latches on the sides of the PC upwards.
cSlide the cover forwards and off the PC.

1Ensure that all internal cables are properly connected and safely
routed.
2Ensure that the cover lock is unlocked.
3Desktop
aLower the cover onto the computer (aligning the front of the
cover with the inner front edge of the computer frame), and
firmly slide it forwards into position.
bIf required, lock the cover using the key.
cReplace the front panel by first inserting the two lower hinges
then pivoting it upwards into place. The two tabs will click into
place.
dClose the central latch on top of the front panel.
Minitower
aEnsure that the two latches on the sides of the cover are up, and
that the lock is unlocked.
bSlide the cover onto the computer, making sure that the two
guides at the bottom of the case slide into the rails at the base of
the computer. Firmly slide the cover backwards into position.
cLower the two latches on the sides of the cover.
dIf required, lock the cover using the key.
4Reconnect all cables and power cords.

Replacing the Airflow Guide (Minitower Only)
1Remove the computer’s cover (described in this chapter).
2Before removing the airflow guide, disconnect the cable from the
backplane.
3Lift the front of the airflow guide and slide it out of the PC.
4First insert the rear of the new airflow guide to engage the hinges,
then lower it into place.
5Reconnect the airflow guide cable to the backplane.
6Replace the cover (described in this chapter).

WARNING To avoid electric shock, do not open the power supply. There are no user-
serviceable parts inside.
1Remove the computer’s cover (described in this chapter).
2Remove all internal power supply connectors.
In the Desktop
1Lift the front of the power supply to free the two side catches then
slide it horizontally out and remove it.

2Insert the new power supply by lowering the front of the power
supply (the fan end) into the PC, and sliding it backwards into
position. Ensure that the hinge on the back of the power supply
engages the notch on the chassis. Then lower the front of the power
supply so that the catch on either side slides into place.
3Reconnect all internal power supply connectors.
4Replace the cover (described in this chapter).
5Select the correct voltage setting for your country, if required.
In the Minitower
1Remove the four screws securing the power supply.

2Slide the old power supply forwards and rotate it out of the PC.
3Insert the new power supply into the PC and ensure it is correctly
positioned.
4Fasten the four screws on the rear of the PC to secure the power
supply in place.
5Reconnect all internal power supply connectors.
6Replace the cover (described in this chapter).
7Select the correct voltage setting for your country, if required.

3Open the two tabs and remove the old memory module (if required).
4Line up the two side notches correctly and insert the new memory

7The accessory board may need a special connection, such as:
•Network board to the RPO/RWU (Remote Power On/Remote
Wake UP) connector or the WOL (Wake on LAN) connector.
•Matrox® DVD Video or Talk Video extension to the multimedia
connectors.
•Sound board to the CD-ROM drive.
For more information, refer to the documentation that came with
the accessory board. The necessary cables are usually provided with
the accessory board.

In the Desktop’s Top Rear Shelf
1Remove the PC’s cover and power supply (described in this
chapter).
2At the rear of the PC, unscrew the retaining bracket (you can use a
coin to do this) and remove it.
3Remove the drive’s connectors.
4Remove the drive by sliding it forward about 1.5 cm (½inch) and
lifting it up and out of the PC.
5Remove the drive from the tray.

4Remove the drive tray by pushing it from the inside and sliding it out
from the rear of the computer.
5Remove the drive from the tray.
6Align the new hard drive in the tray (with the correct orientation)
and tighten the screws.

9Replace the power supply and cover (described in this chapter).

2Unscrew the access plate on the rear on the computer.
3Remove the drive’s connectors.
4Remove the old drive from the PC.
5Pass the new drive through the shelf.
6Secure the drive to the box, using the four screws provided with the
drive. Two screws must be inserted in each side.
7Replace the access plate on the rear of the computer.
8Attach the data and power connectors.
