Top components
TouchPad
There is an unmarked scroll zone inside the right edge of the TouchPad. To scroll up and down using the TouchPad
vertical scroll zone, slide your finger up or down along the right edge of the TouchPad.
To view or change the pointing device preferences:
1. Select Start > Devices and Printers.
2. Right-click the device representing the computer.
3. Select Mouse settings.
Item Component Function
1 TouchPad off indicator ■When the TouchPad zone is active, the light is off.
■When the TouchPad zone is inactive, the light is amber.
■To switch between active and inactive, quickly double-tap the
TouchPad off indictor.
2TouchPad zone* Moves the pointer and selects or activates items on the screen.
3Left TouchPad control* Use the left side of the TouchPad control button like the left button
on an external mouse.
4Right TouchPad control* Use the right side of the TouchPad control button like the right
button on an external mouse.

1TouchPad light ■Off: TouchPad is enabled.
■Amber: TouchPad is disabled.
To switch the TouchPad on and off, quickly double-tap the TouchPad
light.
2Caps lock light On: Caps lock is on.
3Power light ■On: The computer is on.
■Blinking: The computer is in the Sleep state.
■Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation.
4Wireless light ■White: An integrated wireless device, such as a wireless local
area network (WLAN) device and/or a Bluetooth® device, is on.
■Amber: All wireless devices are off.
5num lk light ■On: The numeric function of the keypad is enabled.
■Off: The navigation function of the keypad is enabled.

1Power button* ■When the computer is off, press the button to turn on the
computer.
■When the computer is on, press the button briefly to initiate
Sleep.
■When the computer is in the Sleep state, press the button
briefly to exit Sleep.
■When the computer is in Hibernation, press the button briefly to
exit Hibernation.
If the computer has stopped responding and Windows shutdown
procedures are ineffective, press and hold the power button for at
least 5 seconds to turn off the computer.
To learn more about your power settings, select Start > Control
Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
2Speakers (2) Produce sound.

1External monitor port Connects an external VGA monitor or projector.
2Vent Enables airflow to cool internal components.
✎The computer fan starts up automatically to cool internal
components and prevent overheating. It is normal for the
internal fan to cycle on and off during routine operation.
3 HDMI port (select models only) Connects an optional video or audio device, such as a high-definition
television, or any compatible digital or audio component.
4Network connection light White: The computer is connected to the network.
5RJ-45 (network) jack Connects a network cable.
6Network activity light Amber: Data is being transmitted over the network.
7 USB ports (2) Connects optional USB devices.
8Audio-in (microphone) jack Connects an optional computer headset microphone, stereo array
microphone, or monaural microphone.
9Audio-out (headphone) jack Produces sound when connected to optional powered stereo
speakers, headphones, earbuds, a headset, or television audio.
10 Digital media slot (select models only) Supports the following optional digital card formats:
■Memory Stick (MS)
■Memory Stick Pro (MSP)
■MultiMediaCard (MMC)
■Secure Digital (SD) Memory Card
■xD-Picture Card (XD)
11 Drive light On: The hard drive is in use.

1Optical drive Reads optical discs and, on select models, also writes to optical discs.
2 Optical drive light on release button Blinking: The optical drive is being accessed.
3USB port Connects to an optional USB device.
4RJ-11 (modem) jack (select models only) Connects a modem cable (purchased separately).
5 AC adapter light ■Blinking white: The computer is in the Sleep state.
■Solid white: The computer is connected to external power.
■Amber: The computer is charging.
■Off: The computer is not connected to external power.
6Power connector Connects an AC adapter.
7Security cable slot Attaches an optional security cable to the computer.
✎The security cable is designed to act as a deterrent, but it might
not prevent the computer from being mishandled or stolen.

3 Battery release latch Releases the battery from the battery bay.
4Hard drive bay Holds the hard drive.
5Memory module compartment Holds two memory modules and the wireless local area network
(WLAN) module.
ÄTo prevent an unresponsive system, replace the wireless
module only with a wireless module authorized for use in
the computer by the governmental agency that regulates
wireless devices in your country or region. If you replace
the module and then receive a warning message, remove
the module to restore computer functionality, and then
contact technical support through Help and Support.
