Introduction
This manual describes how to install and operate network analyzer software to
operate the HP 3330B / 3570A combination of instruments to perform low
frequency network analysis. The software enables Bode plots to be generated
and the resulting plots can be plotted on a pen plotter or plot files can be
generated for including in reports.
Additional features include the storing and displaying of reference sweeps.
Equipment required
HP 3330B Frequency synthesizer
HP 3570A Network analyzer
HP 11236 Multi-Unit Cable
HP 11235 HPIB adapter
Two 50 ohm bnc cables
HP 82335 A/B HPIB interface card or National Instruments GPIB II/IIA card
IBM compatible pc, a 486 66 or faster is o.k.
HPIB plotter 7470A or similar (optional)

Interface Card installation
HP 82335 A/B
The A and B version of these 8 bit ISA bus cards differ only in the software that
was supplied with them.
The dip switch on the card should be set as follows:
This sets the address of the card to DC00 to DFFF
If the config.sys file contains an EMM386 statement the following should be
added:
DEVICE = EMM386.EXE X=DC00-DFFF
This to prevent memory conflict between the memory manager and the interface
card.
No drivers are required for the HP card, all the software is contained within the
program.
National Instruments GPIB II/IIA card
Set the dip switches as follows:
PC II
7210
A9 = 1
A8 = 0
A7 = 1
A6 = 1
A5 = 0
A4 = 0
A3 = 0
Jumper in the IRQ 5 position
No DMA Jumper

This configures the card to operate with a base address of 2C0, PC II operation,
IRQ 5 and no DMA. Install the card in a free ISA bus slot.
Drivers must be installed for this card. Drivers can be obtained from the National
Instruments website.
I used version 2.6 from www.ni.com
The drivers must be installed. The following line is added to the config.sys file:
DEVICE = C:\GPIB-PC\GPIB.COM
The system is then re-booted.
From the GPIB-PC directory run IBCONF. This is an interface board
configuration utility.
Addjust the settings to like these shown below:
Scroll down and finish the settings:

Installing the software
From the DOS prompt create a directory
MD HPIBPROG [ret]
Go to the new created directory.
CD HPIBPROG[ret]
Copy the .exe program to this directory.
Use Bode.exe for HP Card
Use BodeNI.exe for the National Instruments Card.
Connecting the Instruments
• The RF connection is optional.
The output of the 3330B can be routed to the rear alt. Output Triaxial connector
or to the front panel. This depends on the internal wiring of the 3330B.
Connect the 1MHz ref connectors using a bnc cable.
Connect the 20-33 MHz connector using a bnc cable.
Connect the Mult-Unit cable via the HP 11235 adapter to the interface card in the
computer. The wiring of this connector is provided in appendix A

The software assumes that the 3330B is at its default address 4 This is
configured by jumpers S1 to S5 on the A6 assembly.
The software assumes that the 3570A is at its default address 1 This is
configured by jumpers 1 to 5 on the A33 assembly.
An optional plotter can be connected to the HPIB. The plotter should be set to
address 6
Starting the Software
At the DOS prompt type Bode [ret] or BodeNI [ret] depending on the version
being used. The opening screen will appear:
Parameters can be changed selecting with the up/down arrows and using page up and
page down to modify the value.
F1
Pressing F1 will cause a log graph to be drawn on the screen. The number of
cycles depends on the Start and Stop Frequencies. The Synthesizer is set to the
Start Frequency and Level. After 500ms the first reading is taken from the 3570A
depending on the parameters set in the RECEIVER section. After the reading a
new frequency is sent to the synthesizer. The frequencys are logrithamically

spaced between the Start and Stop Frequency. The Steps parameter controls
the number of steps.
F6
Pressing F6 allows the user to enter a title. The following screen appears:

The left and right cursor keys can be used to move the cursor.
Backspace deletes the character to the left of the cursor.
Delete key deletes the character above the cursor.
Insert toggles the entry mode from insert to replace.
Home moves the cursor to the start of the title.
End move the cursor to the last character in the title
Enter closes the Enter Title screen and display the title on the screen.
F2
Pressing F2 allows the user to store the current sweep in one of the reference
memories. The following screen appears:
The up / down arrow keys are used to select the memory. Pressing enter transfer
the sweep to the memory and closes the Save Reference screen.

F3
Pressing F3 produces the Display Reference screen. The following screen is
displayed:
Using the up / down keys the reference memory for display can be selected.
Pressing Enter closes the Display Reference screen and displays the reference
sweep superimposed on the current sweep.
The reference sweep can be turned off by selecting No reference display.
F7
Pressing F7 causes the current screen to be plotted on a plotter attached to the
HPIB bus.
F8
Pressing F8 causes the current screen to be plotted to a file. The file is
automatically selected. The first file will be plot1.plt The number is incremented
as additional plots are made.
Programs such as PRINTGL can be used to print HPGL files on a laser printer.

F10
Pressing F10 displays an about box.
