WARNING!
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE FOR INSTALLATION
For installations using wide-voltage-range-rated switchless power distribution units (PDU part
numbers E7671-63001, E7674-63001, E7675-63001, and E7676-63001) for connection to an
uninterruptable power supply (UPS) or other AC source:
nCHECK THE VOLTAGE before connecting any equipment to the PDU! Failure to check
the voltage could lead to severe equipment damage!
The voltage of the PDU receptacles equals the voltage of the receptacle to which the PDU is
connected. This voltage must be within the input voltage range of the equipment installed
in the rack.
nCHECK THE POWER SOURCE RECEPTACLE to be sure it is installed near the rack
and is easily accessible, so that the plug on the PDU power supply cord can serve as the
disconnect device for the rack.
nCHECK THE TOTAL INPUT CURRENT ratings of the equipment installed in the rack
to avoid overloading the PDU or any uninterruptable power supply (UPS) to which it may be
connected.
The output current rating of the PDU equals the output current rating of the power source to
which the PDU is connected, but not more than the maximum current rating (amperage)
marked on the PDU.
nCHECK THE GROUNDING, because when installing rack-mounted products with this
PDU, there is a risk of high leakage current. Reliable ground circuit continuity is vital for safe
operation of this product. To reduce the risk of electric shock, earth (ground) connection is
essential before connecting the PDU. Never operate this PDU with the ground conductor
disconnected.

Overview
The HP Power Distribution Units (PDUs) are designed to provide flexibility for your
power requirements. The PDUs can be mounted both vertically and horizontally on the
rear rack columns, depending on your rack configuration. Use the EIA holes for
horizontal mounting, and the accessory holes for vertical mounting.

Overview

Installation
Installation
Caution: Turn off power to all devices in your rack before installing the PDUs.
Note: Do not use sheet metal nuts to mount the PDU, because the sheet metal nuts do not assure
positive grounding.
Installing PDUs Vertically
PDUs can be installed vertically on the rear rack columns.
1. Determine where you will place the PDU on the rear rack column. Consider if you need access to any
of the rack equipment, or if any components need to slide toward the rear of the rack, then locate the
PDU so the power cables do not hinder access to the equipment.
Note: If the PDU will be used to connect to the wall outlet, be sure to place the PDU toward the
bottom of the rack. This allows the cable to extend easily out the bottom of the rack, under the
rear door (if a rear door is installed).
2. Attach the PDU to the accessory (outside) holes in the rack column with the Torx screws and hex
nuts. Use the hex inserts located toward the top and bottom of each rack column if possible. Do not
use the EIA holes located to the inside of the column.
3. Tighten the screws to force the star washers to pierce the paint and make solid contact with the metal
column. This connects the rack chassis with earth ground to protect against possible electric shock.

Installation
4. When connecting the PDU to the wall outlet, be sure to secure the main power cable with the clamp,
as shown in the figure below.
5. Connect power cables from devices to the PDU, then connect PDU to the wall outlet or UPS.
6. Turn on power to devices.
Installing PDUs Horizontally
The PDUs can be installed horizontally, with the each end of the PDU secured to each of the rear rack
columns. However, you must use the EIA holes (the row of holes on the inner edge of the rack column)
for this configuration.
1. Determine where you will place the PDU on the rear rack columns (usually across the top or across
the bottom). Consider if you need access to any of the rack equipment, then locate the PDU so the
power cables do not hinder access to the equipment.
Note: If the PDU will be used to connect to the wall outlet, be sure to place the PDU toward the
bottom of the rack. This allows the cable to extend easily out the bottom of the rack, under the
rear door (if a rear door is installed).
2. Attach the PDU to the EIA holes in the rack column with the Torx screws and hex nuts.

3. Tighten the screws to force the star washers to pierce the paint and make solidcontact with the metal
column. This connects the rack chassis with earth ground to protect against possible electric shock.
4. Connect the power cables from the devices to the PDU.
5. When connecting the PDU to the wall outlet or UPS, be sure to secure the main power cable with the
clamp, as shown in the figure below.
6. Plug main cable into wall outlet or UPS.
7. Turn on power to devices.
Note: If the PDU is placed at the bottom of a rack containing ballast, the sockets on the PDU must be
facing the top of the rack.

Electrical Connection
Circuit Breakers
The PDU is equipped with a circuit breaker for each power phase. If one phase shorts or overloads, one
or both of the circuit breakers in the PDU may trip. Unplug the PDU before trying to locate and correct
the electrical problem, then reset both circuit breakers on the PDU to restore power to the rack.
European Cabling
Some products sold in Europe are shipped without a power plug on the end of the PDU cable. It is
the responsibility of the customer to supply the correct installation according to local electrical and
building codes.
