1 Setting Up the HP NetServer
LXr Pro8
Before You Set Up Your HP NetServer
Before you set up your HP NetServer:
•Read the Rack Installation Road Map for this HP NetServer. The
Road Map shows how to set up the entire rack system. It will alert you to
issues you must consider before installing the HP NetServer itself.
•Read this chapter. This chapter tells how to set up and configure the HP
NetServer LXr Pro8. It tells you what to do, and in what order. For a
trouble-free installation, read this chapter before even taking the HP
NetServer out of its box.
Setup Steps
It is important that you follow the setup steps in the exact order shown below.
Skip any steps that do not apply to you.
1. Unpack the contents of the shipping box. Do not remove the entire HP
NetServer from the shipping box in one piece. Instead, detach the unit's
satellite chassis from the base chassis and lift it out first. Then lift out the
base chassis. Read Chapter 3 before attempting to do this.
CAUTION The HP NetServer LXr Pro8 weighs approximately 160
pounds. Do not attempt to lift the HP NetServer by yourself,
or to move the NetServer without first detaching the satellite
chassis from the base chassis (Chapter 3). Failure to observe
this warning could result in serious injury, or damage to the
HP NetServer.
2. Verify the contents of the shipping box against the Contents Checklist
included with your HP NetServer. If anything is missing or damaged, call
your reseller.

3. Store the empty boxes and packing material in a safe place. This is
especially important if you plan to ship the HP NetServer elsewhere for
final installation.
4. If you have options to add to the HP NetServer’s satellite chassis
(memory, accessory boards, processor boards), remove the appropriate
access panels from the satellite. (Refer to Chapter 3.)
5. Install additional memory or memory boards in the satellite chassis.
(Refer to Chapter 5.)
6. Install PCI accessory boards in the satellite chassis. (Refer to Chapter 6.)
7. Reconnect all internal cables in the satellite chassis, and reattach all
covers and access panels. (Refer to Chapter 3.)
8. Install disk drives or tape drives in the base chassis. (Refer to Chapter 4.)
9. Familiarize yourself with the HP NetServer's controls, indicators, and
ports. (Refer to Chapter 2.)
10. Your next step depends on when and where you plan to complete the
installation process.
◊Do you plan to install the HP NetServer in a rack now? If so, install
the base chassis in the rack. (See Chapter 7.) Then reattach the
satellite chassis to the base chassis (Chapter 3). Cable the monitor,
keyboard, and mouse the HP NetServer (Chapter 8), and also connect
mass storage, tape drives, and other components.
◊Do you plan to complete configuration at another location? If so, put
the base chassis back in the packing box. Then secure the satellite
chassis to the base chassis, finish repacking, and ship the unit out.
◊Do you plan to configure and test the HP NetServer and other
components together without mounting them in the rack? If so, secure
the satellite chassis to the base chassis (Chapter 3), and cable the HP
NetServer to the monitor, keyboard, and mouse (Chapter 8). Also
connect mass storage, tape drives, and other components.
11. Obtain the release history of the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM that
came with your HP NetServer, to make sure that your Navigator CD-ROM
is the latest. (Refer to Chapter 9.)
12. Power up the HP NetServer. (Refer to Chapter 2.)

13. Insert the Navigator CD-ROM, reboot, and check the Navigator
README file for important installation information. (Refer to
Chapter 9.)
14. Configure the HP NetServer with Configuration Assistant from the
Navigator CD-ROM. Choose the Express Configuration option. (Refer to
Chapter 9.)
NOTE To fully configure the HP NetServer, all the rack components
should be cabled and online (though not necessarily installed
in the rack.)
15. If you plan to ship the fully-configured rack system to a different
destination, label each cable and component. Remove all components
from the rack, including external mass storage. Repack the components in
the original packing material, and label them for shipment.
CAUTION It is critical to disassemble and rebox all electronic
components before reshipment. Electronic components
(especially hard disk drives) can sustain damage when
shipped in rack enclosures.

Control Description
DC Power Switch Turns the system on, or returns it to standby.
Reset Switch Press to perform a warm boot of the system.
Run Indicator During system startup: lights green to indicated that
the system passed the Power On Self Test and is
starting to boot.
During normal operation: should stay green
continuously during normal operation to indicate that
the BIOS is running.
DC Output Indicator Green indicates that the DC voltages from the power
supplies are correct. When not lit, indicates that the
system is in standby mode. (To turn on the system,
press the DC Power Switch. If that has no effect, make
sure that the satellite chassis is firmly in place, and
check the Power Interlock Switch at the rear of the
server. The interlock switch should be turned all the
way counter-clockwise.)
AC Input Indicator Green indicates that AC power is reaching the system.
If not lit, check AC power.
Attention Indicator Normally off. Yellow indicates that a component within
the system has failed or has lost its configuration. Refer
to the message display on the server's control panel for
more information.
If you use the Hardware Identification and Labeling
Utility to locate a server in a multi-server rack
installation, the Attention Indicator on the server you
are seeking will flash yellow.
Message Display Displays information about system status and error
conditions, including POST error codes. (POST
messages and codes also display on the system console.)
In the case of fatal errors, error message displays here
for one minute before the system shuts down
automatically.

DC Output
Indicator Green indicates that DC power is online. During normal operation, this LED should always be green.
AC Input
Indicator Green indicates that the power supply is receiving AC power. This LED is green whenever the server is connected to AC
power.
Attention
Indicator Amber indicates that one or more DC output voltages are out of specification. It does not always indicate a problem: the
LED is normally lit when the system is plugged in but not
running. But if the LED lights during system operation, the
power supply could have a problem.

Control Description
Power Interlock
Switch This switch is mounted on the base chassis. When you turn this switch clockwise, you disable DC power and release the satellite
chassis. You can then pull out the satellite chassis and open the
satellite's top cover.
Satellite Ejector
Handles These handles are mounted on the satellite chassis. Use them to pull the satellite out from the base chassis. After turning the
power interlock switch clockwise, grasp the ejector handles and
pull them down and towards you. The satellite should then move
toward you on its slides.
Fan Pack
Temperature
Indicators
Each of the HP NetServer's two fan packs has an indicator which
lights up when one or more fans in the fan pack have failed.
Boot Status
LEDs Displays Power-On Self-Test codes during startup.

Power-Up and Power-Down Procedures
Power-Up Procedure
1. Make sure that the power interlock switch at the rear of the HP NetServer
is in the locked position, and that AC power is connected. When the
switch is locked, the slot through the middle of the switch is vertical. See
Figure 2-4.
◊If the power interlock switch was unlocked, the system starts as soon
as you relock the switch if AC power is connected. Skip ahead to
step 3.
◊If the power interlock switch was already locked, proceed to step 2.
NOTE The interlock switch locks the satellite chassis in place. As a
safety precaution, the server cannot power up unless this
switch is locked.

2. Press the DC power button on the HP NetServer's control panel. The
system now powers up.

3. Turn on the monitor.
Power Down Procedure
1. Log off all users. Shut down all networking software and applications.
2. Press the DC power switch on the HP NetServer's control panel (Figure
2-5). Normally, this is the complete procedure.
3. If you’re powering down the HP NetServer to service it, unlock the power
interlock switch at the HP NetServer's rear by turning it clockwise (Figure
2-6). The switch also turns off DC power, if you did not already turn it off
at the front panel. (See Chapter 3 for more details on opening and closing
the HP NetServer chassis.)

NOTE After you unlock the power interlock switch, DC power is
turned off for all components within the satellite chassis
except for five volts at the system control board, which is
located on the SCSI extender tray in the bottom of the system's
lower board cage. If you undock the satellite chassis from the
base chassis, no power is present at any internally- or
externally-accessible area of the satellite. However, five volts
are still present at the power supply connector where the
satellite attaches to the base. To remove all power, unplug the
AC power cord.
Connecting AC Power to Multiple-Server Configurations
When you connect the HP NetServer LXr Pro8 to an AC power source, the server
temporarily draws a great deal of current. This occurs even when the system is in
standby mode. This "inrush current" is much greater than the server's normal
operating needs. Generally, your external AC power source can handle the inrush
current.
If you install several HP NetServer LXr Pro8s on one circuit, however,
precautions are necessary. If there is a power failure and power is then restored,
all the servers immediately begin to draw inrush current at the same time. If the
circuit breakers on the incoming power line have insufficient capability, they may
trip and thus prevent the servers from powering up.
