Chapter 1: Introduction
Overview
This Addendum should be used in conjunction with the Data Protector Express User and
Technical Reference Guide. It provides information about new features added to the
product but not yet covered in the main product documentation.

Client Upgrade Process
This process allows members of the Data Protector Express Storage Domain to be
upgraded automatically whenever the Data Protector Express Backup Server is upgraded
to a new revision of Data Protector Express.

To configure automatic upgrade
Display the Administration menu and select Configure Domain Server.
Select Client Upgrade Options.
Select the check box to Enable automatic upgrade of clients.
If the client has a different build number to the Data Protector Express Backup Server, it
is a candidate for upgrading. This applies even if the Data Protector Express Backup
Server has a lower build number. However, to ensure you do not inadvertently overwrite
a newer version on the client, you must actively select Allow downgrade if older build
installed on Backup Server, if you want the client to downgrade to an earlier version.
The Max number of active upgrade downloads value defines how many clients can be
upgraded simultaneously. The number of concurrent updates should be based on your
network traffic and bandwidth.
During Automatic Upgrade
In order to support automatic client upgrade, the installer is allowed to force close the
Data Protector Express administrative application and Quick Access Control, but first it
displays a warning to the user. The user must click Yes to continue or No to cancel the
upgrade.
The client is marked as offline during the upgrade process.
Why Does an Upgrade Fail?
Typical problems include processes that cannot be killed, or permission restrictions on
the host. A client will only try to run the upgrade process once, so if it fails, it will not try
to upgrade again unless the service is restarted.

Performance Settings
The performance settings control the number of active Data Protector Express clients
(hosts) on the network and the number of active selection lists on the database.
Display the Administration menu and select Configure Domain Server. Select
Performance Settings.
There are two parameters that can be configured to optimize resources consumed by Data
Protector Express.
Max number of active hosts: This number controls how many Data Protector Express
hosts can be started for all active backup jobs in the Data Protector Express Storage
Domain. This option is used to prevent packet loss from occurring if data is transmitted
over a network with limited available bandwidth.
Max number of active selection lists: This number controls how many hosts can build
their selection list for all active backup jobs in the Data Protector Express Storage
Domain. This is used to limit use of the Data Protector Express database, to keep it
responsive for active jobs.

Changes to Job Properties
There are additional pages available under the Properties view of a backup job and
changes to the Media section of the Device/Media page.
Device/Media Page
These changes apply both to:
•Device/Media page of Properties view of an existing backup job or a backup job
being created using the new command
•Device Options page of a Backup job creation wizard.
There are two new checkboxes, which should normally be left in the default state. Note:
Whatever the status of the check boxes, neither option applies to automated media
rotation schemes.
Move media to new media location on overwrite: this allows media to be located in a
different folder after backup, if the Write mode for the job is ‘overwrite’.
Rename media to new media name on overwrite: if you check this option, it allows
Data Protector Express to rename media that has been overwritten, even if a previous
media with a different name already exists.

These changes apply both to:
•Device/Media page of Properties view of an existing backup job
•A backup job being created using the new command
They allow you to specify commands for to run before a backup job and on completion of
a backup job. See Chapter 5 for further details.
Barcode Filter Page
This page allows you to define barcode filters for a job. The filter rules may be set for the
whole domain and will be applied automatically to all jobs. Or, they may be set and
applied at job level, using this page. Any filter rules applied at job level overwrite the
default domain settings. See also “Barcode Filters” on page 21.
Copy Policy Page
This page allows you to link a copy job to a backup job or an instance of a backup job.
For example if you want to copy the weekly backup in a rotation set to tape for archiving
you can now specify this as an extension of the backup job properties. See Chapter 4 for
further details.
Daily Append Rotation Type
The Daily Append Rotation Type is added for users with small volumes of data to protect
who would like to use just one piece of media (or media set) per week and have the
protection of being able to take media offsite and recover data from previous weeks. It is
the only rotation type that allows a backup job to be appended to existing media (all other
rotations overwrite the media).
The default setting of this rotation type requires only four media sets; each media set
contains backup data for one week and it is rotated every four weeks. The weekly backup
is a full overwrite of the media used four weeks ago and the daily incremental backups
for that week are appended to the same piece of media. This makes it practical to use a
rotation scheme with stand-alone tape drives. The same piece of media can be used for
each daily backup and the media need only be rotated on a weekly basis.
When you get to the Schedule Job step, in the Backup Wizard, select a Schedule type of
Run repeatedly. You are then able to select the Daily Append rotation type and set up
the run parameters.

10 Daily Append Rotation Type
You cannot edit the properties of the daily backups, they are always incremental. But you
can edit some of the properties of the weekly backup, such as the Day of week when it
occurs.
The Number of rotation sets corresponds to the number of media sets that you wish to
use. The default of 4 assumes four weekly backups before the next rotation. If you have
fewer or more media sets, you can change the Number of rotation sets. For example, if
your backup policy requires you to back up data to tape and retain it on tape for only one
week and the weekly full and daily incremental backups fit onto one media, you only
require one piece of media that may be left constantly in the tape drive. Simply change
the Number of rotation sets to 1 when you create the job.

Chapter 2: Scheduled Jobs and Rotation Sets
Overview
Whenever a backup job is created; the database automatically creates the corresponding
media folders within the backup job folder. This ensures that the link between the job and
the media is always visible. It is particularly useful when a rotation schedule has been
defined for a job because the default folder names reflect the rotation sets.
Similarly, the Details for a backup job that uses rotation now show the current scheduled
job instance and the next scheduled job instance. A new scheduling run command allows
the user to run the next scheduled job instance early. These features make it easier to test
and manage rotation schedules.

12 Rotation Folders
Rotation Folders
Whenever a rotation schedule is defined; the database builds the rotation set folders right
away. This allows the user to see what media the job will be requesting; it also allows the
user to populate these set folders ahead of time if migrating from another rotation. If the
rotation type is changed, the set folders are updated to reflect the new rotation type. Set
folders may only be removed, if the rotation folders within them are empty. Minute
rotation sets are not displayed in this view due to the large number of folders that would
be created for such a schedule.
Scheduling Commands
There are a number of commands for controlling scheduled jobs. (Scheduled jobs are all
jobs that do not use the Run now schedule option in the job creation wizard.) These
commands are accessed from:
•The Commands pane
•A context menu opened by right-clicking on the job in the Job Status view
•The job’s Properties page

•Pause schedule: This command is available whenever a job is scheduled; it
prevents the schedule from proceeding. This option is available at all times; the
job does not have to be running. It allows a user to prevent a job from running
again, without having to wait for the next schedule to start.
•Continue schedule: This command is available when the job schedule is paused.
When selected, it lets the schedule proceed.
•Run next schedule: This command is useful when using a rotation. It allows the
user to tell the scheduler to proceed to the next scheduled event, and use the next
media set if a rotation is defined. This allows the user to immediately advance to
the next rotation set.
Guidelines on Using Run Next Schedule
There are two occasions when this command is useful.
1. In a test environment when you want to test a schedule before using it in
production environment.
2. If a job fails and you want to run the next scheduled job immediately, after
correcting whatever caused the job to fail. Be careful when using this option. It
brings forward the time when the next scheduled job runs; which means that
there will be a longer delay until the next instance of the job. For example, if you
have daily backups scheduled at 18:00 and you apply the Run next schedule
command at 12:00 on Wednesday, the next job will not run until 18:00 on
Thursday. If you do not want to advance the schedule, correct the problem and
apply the Run command to the failed instance of the job.

Rotation Details
Initial Rotation Job
The initial rotation job is always at the highest level. This is the instance of a job with the
longest retention period. In the Daily Append example, the backup job will automatically
schedule and configure the Weekly Set 1 Rotation to run first and back up the data to the
Weekly Set 1 Media folder. You can see which set is scheduled next in the Next rotation
set column or in the Details pane.
In the following example there are three scheduled jobs, two of which also have a copy
policy defined. See Chapter 4 for more information about defining a copy policy.
TIP: If the Next rotation set column is not displayed in the Detail pane, right click in the
column heading and select it from the pull-down list.
Rotation Sets
The next and current rotation sets are listed in the info pane of a selected backup job, and
as columns in the Detail view. These fields are updated each time the schedule property is
updated. The next rotation set is calculated at the end of a backup job, only if the job was
run by the scheduler or from the Run next schedule command. It is never advanced if it
is run manually, using the Run command.
If you have created a copy policy as part of the backup job, the copy sets are also listed.
See Chapter 4 for more information about copy policy.

Next rotation set: This is the rotation set that the job will use for backup the next time it
is scheduled to run, or the next time the “Run next schedule” option is selected.
Next copy set: This is the copy set that the job will be use for the copy media the next
time the job is scheduled to run, or the next time the “Run next schedule” option is
selected. If this is not present, it means that a copy policy either is not defined or is not
specified for the next rotation set type.
Current rotation set: This is the rotation set that the job is currently set up to use for
backup. It is also the set that will be used, if the job is run manually.
Current copy set: This is the copy set that the job is currently set up to use for copy
media. It is only displayed if the backup job includes a copy policy.
TIP: If these columns are not displayed in the Details view, right click in the pane and
select them from the pull-down list.

Chapter 3: Working With Tape Libraries

Overview
Tape libraries automate tape media handling which, in conjunction with the Data
Protector Express backup schedules, allows hands-off backup operations. A tape library
contains one or more of the following elements: tape drives, storage slots for tape media,
import/export slots to add or remove media from the library, robotic mechanisms to move
tape media between the slots and tape drives.
Data Protector Express support for tape libraries, allows you to automate and consolidate
backup in network environments and manage media efficiently. Data Protector Express
has a number of predefined media rotation schemes, which you can easily adjust or add to
in order to meet the requirements of your company’s data protection needs. Data
Protector Express tape library support includes managing media using barcodes, using the
on-board memory in some tape cartridges, such as Ultrium Memory in Cartridge, and
user-configurable tape media load ports (mail slots).
Support for one or more single-drive tape libraries is a standard feature of Data Protector
Express. Additional licensing is needed for additional tape drives added to the library
NOTE: Always manage your tape media from the Data Protector Express interface. Your
tape library may provide a front panel that allows you to carry out various media
management tasks but if you use this for media operations the Data Protector Express
catalog will not have the up-to-date media location information. For this reason, front
panel media operations will require time-consuming inventory processes to update the
Data Protector Express catalog.
Installation Configuration and Licensing
If the tape library is installed correctly and is accessible via the network, Data Protector
Express will automatically detect the tape library. When detected the tape library is added
as an available device to the Data Protector Express catalog.

Each machine that has a tape library attached to it requires a Data Protector Express
Media Server license. The Data Protector Express Backup Server includes the Data
Protector Express Media Server capability. Multiple tape libraries can be connected to the
Data Protector Express Backup Server and the Data Protector Express Media Servers.
The first drive in any tape library is automatically licensed for use. A Data Protector
Express Drive Expansion license must be purchased for each additional drive added to
the tape library. Up to twelve Data Protector Express Drive Expansion licenses can be
installed per Data Protector Express Storage Domain.
If Data Protector Express is installed in evaluation mode, you will be able to use all
drives in the tape library for the $eval_duration$ day length of the evaluation license. At
the end of the $eval_duration$ day evaluation period only the first drive in each tape
library will remain usable. All additional drives are marked as offline and cannot be used
until a Data Protector Express Drive Expansion license is added.
Adding the Data Protector Express Drive Expansion License
This is the same process as for all Data Protector Express option licenses. When you
purchase options, they are enabled by entering an additional license key, which is added
to the existing base license key.
1. Run Data Protector Express and select Licenses from the Help drop-down menu.
3. In the information window, right-click to open a context menu and select the New
command. A New Object window is opened.
4. Enter the license key as the new object and click OK.
5. The new option license key will be added to the list of licenses and the functionality
enabled.
How does Data Protector Express allocate licenses?
Any licenses in Data Protector Express are assigned on a 'first come, first served' basis;
whichever library drives are registered first in the catalog will receive a license (reducing
the license count by one) to the maximum allowable in the base license definition. If
there are more drives than licenses, unlicensed drives are marked off-line (and are
unusable).
To avoid this automatic assignment, it would be necessary to mark a drive as offline after
it has been registered. This should return its license to the license 'pool', allowing another
online drive to take that license.
Viewing a Tape Library
Once you have installed Data Protector Express, expand the Devices view to locate the
tape library. Note how the components of the tape library are displayed so that you can
see how many Devices (tape drives), Import-Export Slots (mail slots) and Storage Slots
are associated with the library.

TIP: Click on Devices in the Favorites desk bar and navigate down from the Network
folder to locate Devices. For a hierarchical view, open Folders in the Detail Area (by
clicking on the Folders icon in the Toolbar).
Devices
The tape drives in a tape library are viewed and managed in the same way as stand-alone
tape drives.
Import/Export Slots
This folder contains information about media in the mail slots.
Library devices provide special import/export mail slots an operator uses to enter or eject
media to or from the device without removing the whole media repository or magazine.
Depending on the device, more than one import/export slot can be provided. In case of a
single mail slot, media are inserted one by one, while in case of multiple mail slots, a
particular number of slots can be used in one enter/eject operation. For consistency and to
avoid duplicating processes you should ensure that use of the mail slot/s is achieved
through Data Protector Express user interface.
Storage Slots
The Storage Slots folder displays the number of available slots. These may contain blank
(new) media, Data Protector Express media or non-Data Protector Express media. Data
Protector Express inventories the media in the slots and displays the information about
the media and its status in the view. This allows you to view all kinds of media, not just
the media used by Data Protector Express, but you will not be able to select non-Data
Protector Express media for a backup or restore job. If the tape is not present in the
catalog the slot status will say ‘Invalid – not in database’. Media in this state are
candidates for use in a job if the Media AutoFormat rule is set to ‘auto format all media’.
Otherwise they will not be chosen for use until they are imported, erased, or formatted.
