What next?
Plan your backup and restore strategy
A successful backup and restore strategy requires careful planning. This planning should define which
data is crucial or valuable and identify where it is located, and determine how to use HP Data Protector
Express Software most effectively.
How you organize backups depends very much on how frequently the data changes, how extensive these
changes are, and how valuable you consider the information. What is essential is that you define what
needs to be backed up and follow a routine, so that backup is regular and trouble-free and your data is
adequately protected.
Determine backup strategies by answering the following questions:
•What data needs to be backed up? What data needs to be restored?
•Do I need to back up all my data and applications, the data only, or just some of the data?
•How much time have I got to run the backup?
•What is the cost of lost data, how often should backups take place?
•How much data will my backup media hold?
•Will I need to use more than one disk/cartridge/CD/DVD?
•Is the backup during the working day or at the end of the day?
•How long will a restore take to run?
Once you have defined your requirements, HP Data Protector Express Software’s wizards will help you
quickly create the jobs that support these requirements.
Decide what needs to be backed up
This includes some or all of:
•Data within an application or database, including the HP Data Protector Express Software catalog
•User profiles and home directories
•Application binaries and configuration files
•Operating system files
•Operating system configuration
•Disk layout information
Data that might not need to be backed up include:
•Temporary directories and files
•Multiple copies of read-only data
•Files and binaries that are easier to recreate or reinstall than to restore
Distinguish between archiving and backup needs
Your backup strategy needs to take into account whether you are using the media for backup or archive
purposes.
•Backups provide additional copies of your current and historical data. The backup data is used to
recovery this data should there be a of hardware failure, software error, accidental or maliciouis
deletion or even catastrophic disaster.
•Archives move data to secondary media. Typically data that is not needed regularly but must be
retained for business, legal, regulatory or company policy reasons is archived. Once it has been
copied to secondary media, usually tape, the original data can be removed from your hard disk.

For ease of recovery, it’s advisable to keep archived data on separate media to the regular backups.
Generally, you do not expect to reuse media that you are using for archived data and it is good practice to
store the archived media off site.
Decide what types of backup to run
The different backup types allow you to make the best use of your media and the time available to run
backup. However, different types of backup require different types of restores.
•Full backup is the starting point for all other backups. It contains all the data in the folders and files
that you select for the backup. Restore is a single job.
•A differential backup contains all files that have changed since the last full backup. It is a smaller
and consequently faster backup than a full backup. However, the backup size can become nearly as
large as a full backup if it is run many times on fast changing data. The time for a system restore
using a differential backup is longer than from a full backup because it must start with a full backup
before the differential backup is restored.
•An incremental backup contains all files that have changed since the last backup, which may have
been full, differential or incremental. Incremental backups take the least time to complete, allowing
them to be run more frequently. The time for a system restore is increased because it must start with a
restore from a full backup then a restore of each incremental backup in order.
Your first backup should always be a full backup to back up your system and data and optionally include
a Verify step. This verifies that the data has been successfully backed up by reading it again. Subsequent
backups may be Full or partial (Differential or Incremental). It’s sensible to run a full backup at regular
intervals, say weekly, with partial backups in between.
The Modes settings on the Job Options page of the Backup job define the type of backup that will be run.
Decide on a media rotation strategy
Media rotation defines the frequency with which backups are run and the time for which they are kept.
A media rotation is not used for archiving data because by definition the arhive is kept indefinitely.
Day-to-day backup, however, is usually more short-term and designed to ensure that your working data is
protected until you no longer need the files or are in position to archive them. You are, therefore, likely to
overwrite the backup (reuse the media), but it is important to ensure that nothing is overwritten while it
may still be needed. The HP Data Protector Express Software backup wizard allows you to implement a
media rotation strategy when you select your scheduling options and helps ensure you make best use of
your media and protect it from being overwritten while the data on it is still required for protection against
loss of or damage to the primary data.
HP Data Protector Express Software supports a number of common media rotation types and also allows
you to define your own custom type. To learn more about media rotation concepts and types, refer to the
User’s Guide and Technical Reference.

How do I find out what license keys I have?
You need a base license to run HP Data Protector Express Software. There are separate licenses for
purchasable options.
To find out what licenses you have installed:
1. Run HP Data Protector Express Software.
2. Select Licenses from the Help drop-down menu.
3. Deselect any licenses and select the Properties command to open the Properties of Licenses window.
4. Select the Status command to see a list.

How do I enter a license key?
We recommend that you enter the base product license key during installation as described in Tutorial 1.
License keys for options are added after the base license is added.
To enter a license key after you have installed HP Data Protector Express Software:
1. Run HP Data Protector Express Software.
2. Select Licenses from the Help drop-down menu.
NOTE: If you are running a temporary license, there will be a red alert in the bottom right-hand corner.
The temporary license is known as a base license and HP Data Protector Express Software will only
allow you have one base license. You will, therefore, need to remove this temporary license before
you can add a permanent one. See also “How do I upgrade HP Data Protector Express Software
Single Server Edition to HP Data Protector Express Software?“ on page 6.
3. In the information window, right-click to open the context menu and select the New command.
4. A New Object window is opened. Enter the license key as the new object and click OK. It is now
included in the list of licenses.
How do I upgrade HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition to HP
Data Protector Express Software?
If you are running HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition it is likely that at some
point you will want to upgrade to the full features of HP Data Protector Express Software. When you
purchase the upgrade to HP Data Protector Express Software, you will receive a new base license key.
NOTE: For registered users of HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition, HP offers a
special part number to acquire the HP Data Protector Express Software at a reduced price.

Protector Express Software
This part number provides an upgrade license key, which is a new base license key. This specially priced
part number is only available to users that have registered a acquired a permanent license for HP Data
Protector Express Software Single Server Edition. The installation of the upgrade license key checks for
the existence of the HP Data Protector Express Software license key.

1. Have your permanent license key for HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition to
hand and have your license key for the upgrade to hand. The license keys are acquired as described in
Tutorial 1.
2. Run HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition.
3. Select Licenses from the Help drop-down menu.
4. Select the current HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition license key and delete it.
This will be the only license key displayed. If you do not a have a copy of the license key saved,
make sure you copy it prior to deleting it.
5. The information window will now be empty. In this empty information window, right-click to open a
context menu and select the New command. A New Object window is opened.
6. Enter the license key for the upgrade as the new object and click OK.
7. You will be prompted for the current HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition
license key that you previously deleted. Enter this.
8. The new license key will be generated from both license keys and displayed in the information
window. The upgrade is now complete and all the features of HP Data Protector Express Software
will be available and it is possible to add options to further extend the functionality.
How do I add options to HP Data Protector Express Software?
If you purchase options, they are enabled by entering an additional license key, which is added to the
existing base license key. Options can only be added to HP Data Protector Express Software. They cannot
be added to HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition. All options must be registered
independently to receive their license key, as described in Tutorial 1.
1. Run HP Data Protector Express Software.
2. Select Licenses from the Help drop-down menu.
3. In the information window, right-click to open a context menu and select the New command. A New
Object window is opened.
4. Enter the license key as the new object and click OK.
5. The new option license key will be added to the list of licenses and the functionality enabled.
How do I upgrade HP Data Protector Express Software to a later version?
To upgrade to a later version of HP Data Protector Express Software the setup.exe program is used (the
equivalent Linux command is install). This program can be found in the root directory of the HP Data
Protector Express Software CD or install package.
After the installer is launched you will find an upgrade icon, which will lead you through the upgrade
process.
How do I assign a license to a certain system?
It is possible to have more systems or devices than license keys. When the Data Protector Exzpress
service runs, it automatically detects features on each system that require a potential license key. License
keys are linked to the systems in no specific order, which might not result in a setup you desire.
To remedy this, disable the HP Data Protector Express Software services on those systems that do not
need this feature. For example: you would not purchase HP Data Protector Express Software Bare Metal
Disaster Recovery licenses for all servers in your domain, and should disable it on servers that do not
require it.

This is done from the Administration tool bar. Select Catalog and locate the appropriate service under
Network and disable it.
How do I create or change my password?
If you are in a multi-user environment, it is important to create a password for the Admin user before you
start to use HP Data Protector Express Software on a regular basis. You will typically nominate someone
to take the role of Administrator who will also set up user accounts and assign passwords to users. Please
refer to the User’s Guide and Technical Reference for information about adding new users and groups.
It is a good idea for users to regularly change their password, particularly if they are working with
sensitive and important data.
1. Open the Administration desk bar.
2. Select Security, then click your User icon.
3. Open the User Password screen by either
•Selecting Change Password… from the Commands task pane, or
•Right-clicking the user and selecting Change Password… from the shortcut menu.
4. Type in your old password and then your new password.
5. Confirm your new password and then click OK.
When selecting a password, remember that some passwords are notoriously easy to break. For example,
because many people use their birth date or the name of their spouse, these are not good choices for
passwords.
TIP: The HP Data Protector Express Software administrator can change a user’s password without
knowing the user’s current password. This is useful when the user has forgotten his or her password.
How do I enable/manage other users?
For the examples in these tutorials we have logged in as Admin and all our jobs are under the
Home/Admin folder. This may be adequate for small organizations, but if you have multiple users with
varied backup requirements, HP Data Protector Express Software allows the Administrator to create and
manage different users and groups of users.
A group is a set of users that are all granted permissions in the same way and at the same time. For
example, the HP Data Protector Express Software administrator may grant permission to read the files on
specific media to users individually, to a group of users or both to users and groups.

You may already have noticed a second folder, Home/Everyone. This is a special group to which new
users are automatically added. Typically, only limited permissions are granted to the Everyone group,
although users can be granted more extensive permissions either individually or as members of other
groups.

How do I see job status?
Using Quick Access Control
Right-click on the Quick Access Control icon and select Jobs. Select the required job and click on Status.
Using the main HP Data Protector Express Software GUI
Click Job Status in the Favorites desk bar, select the name of your first backup job and look at the
Details pane. Alternatively, select the name of the backup job in its folder and look at the Details pane.
When a job is running you can also click on Status in the Commands pane. Click in the Display detailed
status information box to display each step of the job execution in the Properties page.
All status information is logged and also available after the job has finished. These logs can be found in
the Recent Logs pane, where it can be identified by job name and date/time stamp.
How do I know a job worked?
Using Quick Access Control
Right-click on the Quick Access Control icon and select Jobs. Select the required job and click on Status
or Properties.
Using the main HP Data Protector Express Software GUI
Click Job Status in the Favorites desk bar, select the name of your first backup job and look at the
Details pane.

If you apply the Properties command to this job and select the Logs page, you will find one or more logs
of the job executions.
How do I find out what is causing alerts?
Using Quick Access Control
Right-click on the Quick Access Control icon and select Alerts. Click on the required alert to view
details.
Using the main HP Data Protector Express Software GUI
Click Alerts in the Favorites desk bar.
The following example has an alert because we were running evaluation software.
Click the Clear Evaluation Alerts command to remove these alerts. They will reappear each time the HP
Data Protector Express Software service is started again, but will disappear once the license key is
entered. These alerts do not stop a job running, but others may (for example, if the alert says: “Insert a
tape.”)
