Introduction
The HP ThinPro Linux-based operating system was initially designed for t5545
hardware with 512MB of flash. HP ThinConnect was designed for t5145 hardware
with 128Mb of Flash. HP recently released a light version of HP ThinPro designed to
fit on 128Mb Flash, giving HP customers the ability to use HP ThinPro as an
alternative to HP ThinConnect on the t5145 platform.
This white paper explains various methods of migrating an existing t5145 HP Thin
Client from HP ThinConnect to HP ThinPro.
Note:
Customized settings will not be preserved when migrating
from HP ThinConnect to HP ThinPro.

Why Choose HP ThinPro over HP ThinConnect for
the HP t5145 Thin Client?
Improved GUI Experience
The HP ThinPro GUI was built around a Control Center console to provide
dashboard access to all user and administrative touch points. The initial view
defaults to a Connection Manager layer with single click access to either a Control
Panel or a System Information page.
The Connection Manager layer was designed to better integrate traditional
connection types with newer ones, such as VDI brokers, into one menu with shared
access to all settings. This will reduce the number of hops into different areas of the
interface while providing the administrator with immediate visual feedback from
one centralized view.
Add-on Support
HP ThinPro has the ability to accept modular software updates called add-ons,
while protecting critical parts of the file system from exposure. These add-ons allow
HP to deliver low bandwidth component updates from supported third-party
vendors as they become generally available to the public. Another benefit to add-
on support is having the ability to quickly deliver quality improvements in-between
image release dates.
Citrix Desktop Appliance (CDA) Mode
HP ThinPro includes a Citrix utility which enables a dedicated full screen
XenDesktop/XenApp experience. Once enabled, every boot will deliver a premium
XenDesktop/XenApp experience in a controlled environment to reduce desktop
complexity.
Things You Should Know Before Upgrading…
It is important to understand that HP ThinPro is an alternative to HP ThinConnect on
the t5145 hardware platform, but it is not designed to be a direct replacement with
100% functional parity. While the two operating systems were built with very
similar objectives, they are not functionally equal. Below is a list of HP ThinConnect
functions which are not equally supported in HP ThinPro.

Stateless Architecture
While HP ThinPro supports a convenient stateless mode of operation, it does not
support the granularity found in HP ThinConnect. For example, HP ThinConnect
enables the administrator to selectively choose which settings can be preserved
locally and which settings are retained on an FTP repository.
HP ThinPro takes a different approach, allowing administrators to choose either a
fully stateless mode where settings are retained on an FTP repository, or a persistent
mode (recommended) where settings are preserved locally. Both stateless and
persistent modes of operation allow each desktop to automatically inherit profile or
image updates at power-on.
User Group Brokering
HP ThinConnect supports user group brokering by separating general settings from
user-specific settings. This allows user groups with different access needs to acquire
dedicated configurations.
HP research has indicated that user group brokering is handled more effectively
either by server-based connection broker software such HP Session Allocation
Manager (SAM), or by remote desktop management tools such as HP Device
Manager. HP recommends that you consider these utilities, or similar third party
products, to address your desktop brokering needs.

Creating a Master Image
Download the Factory Image
You can easily download the HP ThinPro factory image for t5145 to a USB drive
key using the SoftPaq available on www.hp.com: HP ThinPro for HP t5145 Thin
Client (128 MB).
This SoftPaq provides a Win32 InstallShield wizard which will help you to turn your
USB drive key into a bootable USB drive key that will install the ThinPro image onto
yo u r t 5145.

Create the Master Image on an HP t5145 Thin Client
Install the HP ThinPro factory image on an HP t5145 thin client. (Plug the USB drive
key into a t5145 and turn on the thin client—the image is automatically installed.)
Make whatever changes you need to create your corporate master image (for
instance, you may want to enable Altiris, set the first boot order to network, etc.).
You will use this thin client to supply your master image when you reimage your
thin clients.

Deploying the Master Image—Single Deployment
Capturing the Master Image
1. On the HP ThinPro image, switch to the Administrative Mode:
a. Position your cursor in the screen background, right-click, and select
Administrator/User Mode Switch.
b. Type the Administrator password in the field and click OK.
NOTE
The default password is root.
2. Click Control Panel > Management > ThinState to open the HP ThinState utility.
3. Under What do you want to manage?, select the HP ThinPro image.

4. Under Which action do you want to do?, select make a copy of the HP ThinPro
image, and then click Next.

5. Under Where do you want to save the image?, select create a bootable USB
flash drive, and then click Next.

6. Insert a USB drive key into the USB connector. Select the USB drive key, then
click Finish.
Deploying the Master Image
Insert the USB drive key with the HP ThinPro master image into an HP t5145 thin
client and turn on the thin client—the image is automatically installed.

Deploying the Master Image—Mass Deployment
If you are deploying the new image to more than a few thin clients, remote
deployment makes much more sense. Select from the following three procedures:
•HP ThinConnect to HP ThinPro Using HPDM/PXE
•HP ThinConnect to HP ThinPro Using Altiris
•HP ThinConnect to HP ThinPro Using FTP Update
HP ThinConnect to HP ThinPro Using HPDM/PXE
Before you begin this procedure, you will need a copy of your master image on a
bootable USB drive key.
Setting Up the Master Thin Client
No setup is required.
Capturing the Master Image
1. On the console, click the ThinPro tab.
2. Click the master thin client in the Device Tree pane.
3. Click Imaging in the Task Template pane.
4. Double-click _PXE Imaging to open the Template Editor Imaging window.
5. Click the Content tab, and then click Pull PXE image from device in the Action
area.
6. In the PXE Image area, type a PXE Image Name in the field.
7. Click Save As and type a template name in the field. Click OK.
8. Locate and select the new template in the Task Template list.
9. Click and drag the template to the master thin client in the Device Tree pane.
10. Click OK.

Enable Device Manager in all target thin clients.
1. From ThinConnect Settings Manager, click the Management tab > Device
Manager.
2. In the HP Device Manager Configuration dialog, check Enable Device Manager
and click OK. Click OK again when prompted.
3. Reboot the computer.

Deploying the Master Image
1. Create the job to deploy the new image:
a. On the HP Device Manager server, open the Management Console.
b. From the menu, click Tools > Repository Management.
c. In the Select an element type to display field, select HP ThinPro Images.
d. Click Add from local file to import the HP ThinPro image to the HP Device
Manager Repository and FTP Repository.
e. Click …and browse to the ThinPro deploy image in the
HPDM\Repository\Images\HP ThinPro folder.
f. Select the file and click Choose. Click Next.

NOTE
It may take a few minutes to add the element to the server.
g. Click OK to add the element to the list, and then click Close.
h. Click the Imaging tab.
i. In the list, double-click _PXE Imaging to create a task from PXE Imaging
templates.
j. On the Content tab in the Action area, select Push PXE image to device.In
the PXE Image area, select the PXE Image Name.
k. Click Save As and type the template name in the field. Click OK.
2. Deploy the HP ThinPro master image to the target thin clients:
a. On the device tree, right-click the thin client(s) to be reimaged and select
Send task.
b. Select the template you created and click Next. Click OK.
c. The target thin clients automatically reboot after the new image is installed.
HP ThinConnect is now updated to HP ThinPro.

Setting Up the Master Thin Client
1. Change the boot order:
a. Start up the thin client and press F10.
b. Select Advanced BIOS Features > First Boot Device > Network.
c. Press F10 to save the changes. Press Yto Save to CMOS and Exit.
2. Enable Altiris:
a. On the ThinPro image, change to the Administrative mode.
b. Select Control Panel > Management > Altiris Configuration.
c. Select Enable Altiris and either
click Use Multicast
or
clear Multicast and type the TCP address in the field.
d. Click OK and reboot the thin client.
Capturing the Master Image
1. On the Altiris console, change to the ThinClient View at Menu > View > Select
ThinClient View.
2. Locate the thin client with the master image in the Computer pane. Right-click
the thin client and select Capture Image.
The image appears in the left pane in the Images folder under Resources. The
HP ThinPro image is automatically copied to the following location:
\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server\ThinClient\Images\
The file extension of the image file must be .img.
3. Click OK.

1. On the HP ThinConnect image, open the ThinConnect Settings Manager and
click the Management tab.
NOTE
Altiris must be enabled on the target thin clients and the
Altiris Client Agent should be set to start automatically
with DHCP Altiris server port set to 190 scope option.
2. Click Configure Altiris.
3. Select Enable Altiris and either
click Use Multicast
or
clear Multicast and type the TCP address in the field.

4. Create a script to change the boot order on the target thin clients:
a. On the Altiris console, click View. Clear Show Thin Client View, if enabled.
b. Click File > New, and select Job to create New Job in the Jobs console.
c. Type a job name and click Add.
d. Click Run Script.
e. Type the following commands on separate lines in the Run this script text
box (be sure to include the space after cd and before nuh).
cd /usr/share/hp
./hpbootorder nuh
f. Select Linux under Choose the script operation system.
g. Click Next > Finish.
h. Right-click the job, select Job Scheduling Wizard, and then click Next.
i. Select the target thin clients in the clients lists.
j. Click Next > Finish.
k. Click OK and Yes.
Deploying the Master Image
1. On the Altiris console, click View > Select ThinClient View.

2. Right-click the thin client and select Deploy Image.
3. Select the ThinPro image, click OK, and then click OK to confirm.
The target thin clients will reboot automatically after the image is deployed.
After rebooting, HP ThinConnect will be updated to HP ThinPro.

5. Select a FTP server ,and then click Next.

6. Type the FTP server information in the fields.
Example:

Image directory :/linux/s2st0090/image/
Image file : HP00xxxxx.DD
NOTE
On the FTP server side, the image file extension must be
upper case DD. Example:
/linux/s2st0090/image/ HP00xxxxx.DD
/linux/s2st0090/image/ HP00xxxxx.DD.md5
7. Disable Compress the image.
8. Click Finish > Yes > OK.
9. On the FTP server, create a folder structure like
/linux/[Image_version]/image
10. Copy the HP ThinPro image and MD5 file to the folder
/linux/[Image_version]/image. The name of HP ThinPro image and
MD5 must be the same as [Image_version].

Setting Up the Target Thin Clients
NOTE
Because FTP update will check the image name format,
change the HP ThinPro image name to the
HP ThinConnect name format before updating.
1. On HP ThinConnect, in the HP ThinConnect Settings Manager on the
Management tab, click Enable Automatic Update in the FTP area.
2. Type the FTP address in the field.
3. Type /in the FTP Location field. Click OK and reboot the thin client.
After rebooting, HP ThinConnect will be updated to HP ThinPro.
