HSS Hire C8 Troubleshooting guide

the machine with it raised. Earth and stones may be thrown
back at dangerous speeds.
At the end of a strip, disengage the tines and turn the
cultivator round for the next strip.
For deep cultivation first dig the plot over to a depth of
about 75mm, then repeat gradually increasing the
depth.
Never push the equipment beyond its design limits. If it
will not do what you want with reasonable ease and speed,
assume you have the wrong tool for the job. Contact your
local HSS Hire Shop for advice.
Keep the equipment clean - you will find this less of a chore
if you clean it regularly, rather than wait until the end of the
hire period.
Regularly check the fuel level and top up as necessary
with unleaded petrol.
Regularly check the oil level - when the engine is cold and
on level ground. Withdraw the dipstick, wipe it clean, then
replace it, remove it a second time and verify that the oil level
is between the min and max lines, top up as necessary.
Suitable oils are available on sale or return from your local HSS
Hire Shop.
Keep the engine upright. If it should tip over, mop up any
spilled oil and fuel and contact your nearest HSS Hire Shop
before restarting.
Watch for oil leaks as they may indicate a cracked crankcase,
so switch OFF immediately and contact your local HSS Hire
Shop.
When not in use, store the equipment somewhere clean,
dry and safe from thieves.
Select neutral gear, disengage the tines and release the
OPL and set the throttle to idle. Close off the fuel tap.
Hose the equipment down to get it as clean as possible
ready for return, to your local HSS Hire Shop.

If the soil is naturally stony, ask our shop staff for
advice.

For advice on the safety and suitability of this equipment
contact your local HSS Hire Shop.
There is a serious risk of personal injury if you do not
follow all instructions laid down in this guide.
The hirer has a responsibility to ensure that all necessary
risk assessments have been completed prior to the use of
this equipment.
This equipment should only be used by an operator
who has been deemed competent to do so by his/her
employer.
This equipment should be used by an able bodied,
competent adult who has read and understood these
instructions. Anyone with either a temporary or permanent
disability, should seek expert advice before using it.
Keep children, animals and bystanders away from the
work area. Cordon off a NO GO area using either cones,
barriers or tape, available for hire from your local HSS Hire Shop.
Never use this equipment if you are ill, feeling
tired, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
This equipment generates potentially harmful noise
levels. To comply with health and safety at work
regulations, ear defenders must be worn by everyone in
the vicinity.
Wear practical, protective clothing, gloves and
footwear. Avoid loose garments and jewellery that
could catch in moving parts, tie back long hair.
This equipment is heavy, never attempt to lift it, always
use ramps to load or unload from a vehicle.
Ensure the work area is well lit and ventilated, if in
doubt, ask about lighting and ventilation equipment at your
local HSS Hire Shop.
Do not work near flammable gases or liquids, petrol or
paint thinner fumes for example. Keep combustible
materials at a safe distance - at least 5m.
Make sure you know how to switch this machine OFF
before you switch it ON in case you get into difficulty.
Never leave the unit running and unattended.
Always switch the engine off and wait for moving parts
to come to rest before making adjustments to it.
Engines, especially the exhausts, get very hot so switch
OFF and allow to cool before touching them.
Keep flammable materials well away from engine and
exhaust.
Make sure that everyone is warned of what you are
doing.
Survey the area to be cultivated and ensure that there
are NO hidden services (electric cables, soil pipes etc.)
below the work area. If in doubt, use a cable avoiding tool
available from your local HSS Hire Shop.
Be careful if your view is obstructed, avoid using the
cultivator under low branches where you are forced to crouch
to pass under.
The cultivator tines can cause serious injury. Always keep feet
and hands well away from the tines taking special care
when starting.
Check the condition of the equipment before use. If it
shows signs of damage or excessive wear, return it to your
local HSS Hire Shop.
Ensure the guard is correctly fitted and secure before
starting work.
COSHH information sheets are available from your local HSS
Hire Shop.
Clear the area to be cultivated of everything that could get
in the cultivator’s way – sticks, stones, washing lines etc.
Any long grass should be cut and cleared, as this will clog
the tines and reduce the working depth.
Ensure the soil is in a suitable condition to be cultivated,
heavy soil should be neither too wet or too dry.
Move the cultivator onto the plot, set the machine on
firm level ground and check fuel and oil levels (see
Equipment care).
It is essential to familiarise yourself with all the controls
before starting.
Adjust the cultivation depth using the handle on top of the
rear cover. the more you raise it, the deeper the cultivator will
dig, up to a maximum of about 200mm.
C8…
Adjust the handles - up, down, or sideways (to avoid
walking on newly cultivated soil). Move the central lever back,
adjust the handles to the desired position and release the lever
to lock in position.
The unit is fitted with an operators’ presence lever (OPL),
the engine will only run if the OPL is depressed.
Now, squeeze the clutch and OPL together, lock with the
spring clip, and use the left hand gear lever to engage
neutral gear (marked N on most models).
Open the fuel tap and set the choke - fully closed if starting
from cold, half closed if the engine is warm.
Set the throttle to the halfway position, two or three brisk
pulls on the starter cord should now start the engine.
Once the engine has warmed up, fully open the choke
and reset the throttle to idling speed.
Bolans Horse..
Ensure the drive lever is disengaged, (set this by raising the
lever) or the engine will not start.
Open the fuel tap and set the choke - fully closed (two
clicks) if starting from cold, half closed (one click) if the engine
is warm.
Set the throttle to the ‘fast’ position (rabbit), then two or
three brisk pulls on the starter cord should now start the
engine.
Once the engine has warmed up, fully open the choke
and reset the throttle to idling speed.
C 8...
Hold the OPL and clutch lever together, select forward
gear (marked with a forward facing arrow) and set the
throttle half way. The throttle can be increased, but you are
advised to start at half throttle until you are used to the way the
machine handles.
Slowly release the clutch and the cultivator will move
forward.
To change gear (forward or reverse), squeeze the clutch
lever and set the throttle to idle. Select the required gear,
slowly release the clutch and prepare to move off as already
described.
To STOP in an emergency, release the OPL.
To engage the tines, squeeze the clutch lever and set
the throttle to idle. Select tine drive by moving the tine
selection lever forward.
Note that when selecting reverse, the tines must be
disengaged. The cultivator gearbox is set so that if reverse is
selected when the tines are in drive, the tines will be disengaged.
In addition, tine drive cannot be selected if the unit is in
reverse gear. This is a safety feature of the machine.
Bolans Horse...
Ensure the drive lever is in the disengaged position.
Move the speed selection lever backward for slow or
forward for fast (note there is an intermediate position for
neutral). and set the throttle half way. This can be
increased, but you are advised to start at half throttle and in the
slow gear, until you are used to the way the machine handles.
While holding down one of the operators presence
levers (OPL), gently lower the drive lever and the
