On first contact with the surface, the trimmer may
try to wander off line. Take great care until you
become familiar with the tool. Try it out on a piece of
waste wood first.
Hold the workpiece steady with clamps or a vice,
positioning these so they don’t interfere with the cutter.
Check the material being worked on, making sure
it is free from nails, screws or other foreign bodies
which would damage the cutter.
Hold the tool in both hands and adopt a stable
stance that gives a good view of the cut while
keeping you clear of the tool’s cutters.
Do not work in areas where you are forced
to stand on loose debris or on a slippery
uneven surface.
If possible, drape the tool’s flex over one shoulder to
keep it clear of the cutters, but make sure there is
still enough slack for you to reach the end of the
workpiece without difficulty.
Position the trimmer on to the laminate with the
cutter clear of the work and switch ON. Be ready for
the machine to kick slightly when it first starts.
Now move the trimmer
into the work and apply
steady pressure as it cuts.
You can then slide the
trimmer along the work
to remove waste
as required.
Never push the equipment beyond its design
limits. If it will not do what you want with reasonable
ease, assume you have the wrong tool for the job. Ask at
your local HSS Hire Shop for advice.
Keep the equipment clean. You will find this less of a
chore if you clean up regularly, rather than wait until the
end of the hire period. In particular, clean out the tool’s
ventilation slots. If these get blocked, the motor will over-
heat and burn out.
When not in use, store the equipment somewhere
clean, dry and safe from thieves.
To trim large amounts, remove the waste in easy
stages. It gives better results, the bit will stay sharp
longer and it places less strain on the tool.
Use only sharp cutters. Blunt ones give poor results
and can overload the tool’s electric motor.
EQUIPMENT CARE
BASIC TECHNIQUES Use only cutters designed for laminate trimming.
The wrong cutters could damage both the tool and
the workpiece.
Carefully clean off dust and other debris, paying
special attention to the tool’s ventilation ports, remember
to remove the cutter from the collet, then neatly coil
the flex ready for return to your local HSS
Hire Shop.

For advice on the safety and suitability of this
equipment contact your local HSS Hire Shop.
Keep children, animals and bystanders away from
the work area.
Never use this equipment if you are ill, feeling
tired, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
This equipment should only be used by a
competent person who has read and understood
these instructions.
There is a serious risk of personal injury if you do
not follow all instructions laid down in this guide.
Safety Goggles MUST be worn by everyone in
the work area.
Some materials when cut contain substances
which, when inhaled, can be harmful to
health. A suitable mask must be worn when using
this equipment.
This equipment generates potentially harmful
noise levels. To comply with health and safety at
work regulations, ear defenders must be worn by
everyone in the vicinity.
Wear practical, protective clothing, gloves
and footwear. Avoid loose garments and
jewellery that could catch in moving parts, tie back
long hair.
Always switch OFF and unplug the equipment
when not in use.
Take special care when changing cutters – they
are sharp.
Make sure you know how to switch this machine
OFF before you switch it ON in case you get
into difficulty.
Always unplug the tool before making adjustments
to it. Check that it is switched OFF and that you have
removed all spanners and keys before plugging it back in.
Having switched OFF, always wait for the cutter to
come to rest before putting the tool down.
Check the condition of the equipment before use.
If it shows signs of damage or excessive wear, return it to
your local HSS Hire Shop.
Most HSS laminate trimmers plug into a standard
13amp power socket. However, 110V units (with a
round yellow plug) must be provided with a suitable
110V generated supply, or powered from the mains
via a suitable 110V transformer.
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
GENERAL SAFETY If the equipment fails, or if its flex or plug gets
damaged, return it. Never try to repair it yourself.
Keep flexes out of harm’s way, and clear of
moving parts.
Extension leads should be fully unwound and
loosely coiled, away from the equipment. Never run
them through water, over sharp edges or where they
could trip someone.
Using electrical equipment in very damp or wet
conditions can be dangerous.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, use a
suitable RCD (Residual Current-Operated Device)
available from your local HSS Hire Shop, or power
equipment from a mains circuit with a built-in RCD.
Never carry or pull the equipment by its flex.
Ensure the equipment and power socket are
switched OFF before plugging into the
power supply.
Before using a
laminate trimmer,
select the correct
cutter for the job. Our
staff will be happy to
advise you.
To fit the cutter,
switch OFF and
unplug the tool, use
the smaller spanner
provided to stop the
spindle turning.
That done, use the
larger spanner to
open the lock nut,
then wearing
gloves, push the
cutter’s shank into the collett and re-tighten the lock
nut to hold the cutter firmly in place.
Next, set the depth of cut. Loosen the wing nut on
the outer sleave, then turn the adjuster until the
outer sleeve base plate is in line with the base of the cutter.
Reset the outer sleeve so that the cutter protrudes
2mm greater than the thickness of the laminate,
then lock in position with the wing nut.
Finally, set either the guide fence or the roller guide
as required using the small thumbscrews on the side of
the tool’s body.
For accuracy, the roller guide should be used to
control the distancing of the cutter from the edge
GETTING STARTED
of the workpiece. This ensures that the cutter is only
in contact with the waste laminate and not the
finished work.
