2 Getting Started
About This Chapter
This chapter describes the structure of the OceanStor N8500 Clustered NAS Storage System
(the N8500 for short).
The N8500 contains the following hardware components:
lClustered NAS engine enclosure
A clustered NAS engine enclosure contains two Clustered NAS Engine Nodes (CNEN for
short). Two or four CNENs can be configured to form the clustered NAS engine.
lStorage unit controller enclosure (SUC for short)
You can install 1 to 18 SUCs for an N8500. The available SUC models are S2600T,
S5500T, S5600T, S5800T, and S6800T. SUCs can communicate with CNENs in a direct
connection or switch connection.
lStorage unit disk enclosure (SUD for short)
You can attach multiple SUDs to one SUC. The number of SUDs that can be attached
depends on SUC models.
lEthernet switch
An Ethernet switch is required for a heartbeat network only when more than two CNENs
are installed. It is advisable to install two Ethernet switches for redundancy.
lFibre Channel switch
A Fibre Channel switch is required to provide additional ports when ports are insufficient
in a direct connection between the CNEN and SUC. It is advisable to install two Fibre
Channel switches for redundancy.
lCabinet
It is optional to configure a cabinet. A cabinet assembly contains a cabinet and its matching
power distribution unit (PDU).
This document describes the installation plan and the procedures for unpacking, assembling,
cabling, and initializing an N8500.
The following illustrates N8500 hardware structures with different models of storage units.

2.1 Before You Install
Making plans for power distribution, device assembling, system maintenance, IP address
assignment, and device cascading can facilitate device installation.
Power Distribution Plan
An appropriate power distribution plan contributes to high device security, stability, and
reliability. Table 2-1 describes power distribution principles that the N8500 must comply with.
Table 2-1 Power distribution principles
Location Principle
Equipment
room
1. A backup electrical circuit is available for supporting power input to the
cabinet.
2. Input voltages for a cabinet are the same.
3. A cabinet's power distribution unit (PDU) supports two independent
power supplies. The failure of one power supply does not affect the other
one.
4. The rated load traffic of power cables can meet the requirements for the
maximum running power of cabinets and devices. Circuit breakers and
power cables must be deployed as required.
5. Power input terminals of a cabinet are safely and conveniently connected.
Cabinet 1. Power input circuits of the device whose power input works in N+1 backup
mode connect to different branches of the power supply.
2. Devices in the cabinet are effectively protected against overvoltage and
short circuits.
3. Devices (except the devices that require device-level backup and the
accessories that do not affect services) in the cabinet are provided with non-
disruptive power supply.
4. A PDU is configured in the cabinet. It receives power from the external
power source and supplies power to the devices in the cabinet.
5. Devices in a cabinet must receive power from the PDU of this cabinet and
never from another cabinet.
6. If the actuator of a circuit breaker operates in a vertical direction, move
the actuator upward will connect the power supply, while moving the
actuator down will disconnect the power supply. If the actuator of a circuit
breaker operations in a horizontal direction, moving the actuator to the left
will disconnect the power supply, while moving the actuator to the right will
connect the power supply.

Location Principle
7. The power cable and signal cable are separated at a distance of longer than
3 cm.
8. Each circuit breaker in the PDU connects only to one device.
9. The power of the devices in the cabinet matches the rated current of the
protection components. The devices and system enclosures of the same
model receive power from the protection components of the same rated
current.
10. If circuit breakers need to be vertically connected onsite, cables are
routed to the circuit breaker from top to the bottom.
Assembling Plan
The proper device layout ensures optimum functioning the N8500.
The N8500 must comply with the following layout principles:
lA clearance of 1 U is available between every two system enclosures in a cabinet. (1 U =
44.45 mm/1.75 in.).
lThe device layout must conform to the power distribution design of the entire cabinet and
meet heat dissipation requirements in the equipment room (depending on the actual heat
dissipation condition).
lAt least a clearance of 120 cm is available between cabinets and 100 cm between a cabinet
and the wall.
lA pair of delivery-attached guide rails can bear a component of more than 50 kg.
lComponents are arranged in convenient locations for cabling. Space is reserved for future
expansion.
Table 2-1 shows the locations of all components in the N8500 with the S2600T or S5500T
storage system as the storage unit.
NOTE
Actual configuration and assembling may vary depending on the number of components, cabinet models,
and disk specifications. Figure 2-3 shows an N8500 that is equipped with one clustered NAS engine
enclosure, one SUC (housing 3.5-inch hard disks), two Fibre Channel switches, and two Ethernet switches.
