COLUMN DRILLING MACHINE

Safety Guidelines
Keep the work area clear. Remove foreign objects prior to operation so as to
ensure safety.
Use the safety guard. The safety guard prevents Chips from spraying out and
causing cuts or burns.
Remove adjusting keys and wrenches before turning machine on.
Lock the machine head. Check if the machine head is safely locked prior to
operation.
Wear proper apparel. Do not use loose clothing or jewelry, which can get
caught in moving parts. Rubber soled footwear is recommended for best footing.
Always use safety glasses. Wear protective eye wear when operating,
servicing, or adjusting machinery.
Keep hands in sight. Do not put hands or fingers around, on, or below any
rotating cutting tools.
Keep children away . All visitors should be kept a safe distance from the work
area.
Never leave the machine running unattended. Turn the power off. Do not
leave the machine until it comes to a complete stop.
Secure work. Use clamps or a vise to hold work, when practical. It is safer than
using your hands, and it frees both hands to operate the machine.
Do not overreach. Failure to maintain proper working position can cause you to
fall into the machine or cause your clothing to get caught, pulling you into the
machine.
Do not use in a dangerous environment. Don’t use power tools in damp or
wet locations, or expose them or rain. Keep work area well lighted.
Do not repair or adjust the voltage inverter. Notify qualified personnel for
repairs or adjustment to prevent damage or personal injury.
Always disconnect the machine from the power source before servicing.

Thank you for purchasing HU 40 GTF Super Vario Variable Speed Drilling Machine. Please read this
manual carefully before operating the machine and keep the operating manual for later reference.
This machine is of fine quality and stable performance. Itisequipped with drilling and tapping
functions and can be operated for years given regular maintenance and proper usage. The machine’s
structure isdriven by gear with high torque which in turn generates powerful spindle rotation.
Controlled by inverter, itisrun with variable speed in 2 speed ranges for easy and safe speed
adjustment. Other than that, the machine’sspindle is equipped with mechanical automatic down feed
to set the drilling when handling large number of workpiece. In terms of material, the entire machine
body including the base、table and column are made by high-strength casting iron for higher
durability.

1 Description of Machine

2 Transporting the Machine
When transporting in its original own packaging, please use
a forklift truck or hand trolley. Find the proper position to
place machine then anchor it.
3 Getting to Know Your Machine
3.1 Control Panel
A. ON Switch – Starts the motor.
B. Stop Switch – Stops the motor. As the power still exists,
pressing ON restarts the machine.
C. Emergency Stop Switch – Stops the machine. Turn the
switch clockwise to unlock the switch before starting
the machine.
D. Reverse button – Reverses the spindle rotation for
tapping.
E. Tachometer – Displays the rate of spindle rotation in
RPM.
F. Spindle Speed knob – Changes the speed of spindle
rotation.
G. Pump Switch – Starts the coolant flow for cutting.
H. Drilling/Tapping Selector – Selects the mode of
operation, drilling or tapping.
J. High/Low gear selector* – A gear transmission lever. It
selects Hi or low speed ranges.
*Important: Use only while the machine is stopped.
Failure to do so can cause damage to the gear system
!Warning: After daily use, disconnect machine from power
source or press emergency stop switch to shut off the power
completely. Do not keep the machine connected over 24
hours, it may cause damage to the machine.
3.2 The Machine Head
The machine head attached to the top of the column. It
houses the motor, spindle, controls, and transfer
mechanisms.
3.3 The Work Table
The work table can be position at varying heights and 360
around the column. The work table is T-slotted to allow the
use of M14 or ½” screws. Please limit the maximum weight
of the workpiece to 80kgs. Overloading the table may affect
the accuracy of the table.
Below the work table are three crankshafts. They provide
the mechanism for locking and vertical movement of the
work table. Please refer to the drawing T1 and S1 on the
machine for clear indication.
Always unlock the work table before changing the table
height. Then lock the work table to secure in position.
Use the riser handle on the crankshaft (S, fig. 2) to lock or
unlock the work table height.
Use the riser handle on the front or right side crankshaft (T,
fig. 2) to raise or lower the work table’s height.

3.4 The Machine Base
The Machine base houses the coolant tank and pump. The
coolant tank is a reservoir to hold coolant. The coolant
pump transfers coolant up to the machine head and onto the
drill bit. Coolant is a solution that lowers tool wear and
enhances drilling by cooling and lubricating the drilling tool.
Before operating a new machine, add coolant to the coolant
tank by referring the install section 4.6. When iron filings
clog the screen, cleaning will be required, please refer to the
section of 6.3 cleaning and accessing of coolant system.
4 Machine Installation
After unpacking, please follow the steps below to install your
machine.
4.1 Positioning the Machine
1. Check to see if the head is secure to the column
with 10mm hex wrench (B, fig. 4).
!Warning: Failure to lock the machine head may result in
machine damage or personal injury.
2. Position the belt (with a load capacity of about
500kgs) at the points as marked (K, fig. 4) below the
machine head to lift the machine.
3. The worktable of the machine can be rotated 360o,
so choose a location with enough space and solid
foundation.
4. Initial Cleaning
Machine is shipped with a rustproof oil coating.
Clean the rustproof oil coating from all exposed
metal surface. Then apply oil/grease.

4.2 Minimum Requirement for Housing the Machine
Please comply with the following terms to maximize the life and performance of the machine and its
components.
The Main voltage and frequency complying with the requirements for the machine’s motor.
Environment temperature from –10°C to +50°C.
Relative humidity not over 90%.
Altitude not over 1000m
4.3 Anchoring the Machine
-Position the machine on a firm and level concrete floor.
-Maintain a minimum distance of 800mm from the wall to
rear of the machine.
-Anchor the machine to the ground, as shown in the diagram,
using screws and expansion plugs or sunken tie rods that
connect through holes in the base.
-Ensure that it is sitting level.
4.4 Assembling Loose Parts
A. Attach Riser handle to the necessary crankshaft.
4.5 Electrical Connection of the Machine
Make sure whether the voltage of the acquired machine is
220V/1 phase or (220V, 380V, 400V,440V)/3 phases prior to
connection. If the machine cannot be operated after wires
have been connected, please check the following items:
1. Is the Emergency switch released?
2. Is the door of the electrical cabinet properly closed
and switched to ON (locked) position?
3. Is the safety guard in the proper position (closed)?
4. Is the down-feed rate set to “0”?
4.6 Coolant
Before operating a new machine, add coolant to the coolant
tank by looking at the pilot (window) indicator at the right wall
of base, fill the coolant to at least half way through the
window (A, Fig.5) (minimum 6 liters). User can choose the
one most suitable for their requirements. For your reference
SHELL LUTEM OIL ECO is highly recommended.
The ratio of oil and water is 50% respectively.
The minimum percentage of oil diluted in water is 8~10%.
Cleaning is required when iron filings clog the screen
(B,Fig.6) at the bottom right corner of the water drain entry
at the base.
Please refer to the drawing A1and B1 on the machine for
clear indication.

5 Machine Operation
5.1 Changing the Spindle Speed
Change speed ranges using lever (Fig. J) only while the
machine is stopped. Failure to do so can cause damage to
the gear system. Then spindle speed can be adjusted to the
proper drilling RPM by using the spindle speed knob (F,
Fig.1). The spindle speed has two speed ranges: Hi ranges
from 245-2000min-1. Low ranges from 65-540 min-1.
5.2 Setting the Depth Stop
This machine has some built-in control stops that activate
when either the front depth scale or side depth scale ring
reaches zero. They function to stop drilling, reverse tapping,
or return the drill bit to start height.
1. Start in manual down-feed mode.
2. Set the tool depth to zero. Lower a drilling or
tapping bit to the surface of the work piece. This
position is zero (Fig. V).
3. Hold in position. Manually hold the levers to keep
the bit depth in position (V) or change levers to
automatic mode to set in position.
4. Set the depth stop:
For manual operations use the front depth scale
1. Loosen the lock handle (M, Fig. 7) and adjust
the depth indicator.
2. Lock the handle (M, Fig. 7) to set the depth
stop.
3. Release the handle (U, Fig.7).
For drilling in auto mode use the down-feed depth
scale
1. Loosen the handle (U, Fig. 7) and adjust the
depth scale ring.
2. Lock the handle (U, Fig. 7) to set the depth
stop.
3. Release the handle (M, Fig. 7).
5.3 Manual Down-feed
The down-feed rate changes can only be made while
machine is running and is in drilling mode.
1. Check for drilling mode (H, Fig.1).
2. Start machine. Press start button (A, Fig. 1).
3. Set the down-feed rate to “0”. Use the handle (L,
Fig. 8).
4. Set to manual down-feed operation. Turn handle (N,
Fig. 9) clock-wise to lock the down-feed levers into
manual mode.
*Down-feed must be lock to avoid accidental change
to auto down-feed mode while using the levers.
5. Set the depth stop. Use the front side depth stop.
Refer to Setting the Depth Stop (5.2).
6. Release the side ring scale depth stop. Loosen the
lock handle (U, Fig. 7). This depth stop must be free
to allow the front side depth stop to work properly.
7. Use the down-feed lever to lower the spindle for
operation.

5.4 Automatic down-feed
Automatic down-feed is feature for use only while drilling.
The down-feed rate changes can only be made while
machine is running and is in drilling mode. Rate of the
automatic spindle down-feed (Fig. 8) is equal to A: 0.2, B:
0.05, and C: 0.1.
1. Check for drilling mode (H, Fig.1).
2. Start machine. Press start button (A, Fig. 1).
3. Set the down-feed rate. Use the handle (L, Fig. 8) to
change the rates.
* Rate changes (Fig. 8) can be made while machine
is running and in drilling mode (H, Fig. 1).
3. Set the depth stop. Use the side ring scale depth
stop. Refer to Setting the Depth Stop (5.2).
* Only the ring scale will disengage the automatic
down-feed and return the drill to starting height.
4. Release the front side depth stop. Loosen the lock
handle (M, Fig. 7). This depth stop must be free to
allow ring scale depth stop to work properly.
5. Release the down-feed lever lock. Turn the handle
(N, Fig. 9) about 7 times.
6. Change the auto down-feed mode. Pull the handle
outward to select automatic down-feed. Refer to
(Fig.9).
Note: Setting the scale ring’s depth stop will disengage the
automatic down-feed when the zero setting is
reached. The down-feed lever will transfer to manual
mode and return the drill to starting height.
5.5 Using the micro-feed hand wheel
The micro-feed hand wheel is capable of slow and accurate
movement of the drilling tool. It also has an anti-spin feature
for times when the micro-feed hand wheel will not be used.
Pull out the knob (Z, Fig. 7) to disengage the micro-feed
hand wheel during auto down-feed and non use. Micro-feed
hand wheel operates in automatic mode with down-feed rate
set to zero.
1. Adjust the rate of spindle down-feed to “0”. Use the
handle (L, Fig. 8).
3. Set the tool depth to zero. Lower the tip of the bit to
the top of the workpiece (Fig. V).
4. Adjust the down-feed levers to automatic down-feed
mode. Pull down-feed handle (N, Fig. 9) to the
automatic position.
4. Release the micro-feed hand wheel’s depth ring.
Loosen the thumbscrew (X, Fig. 7).
5. Set the scale to zero. Adjust the depth ring (Y, Fig.
7) to zero.
6. Lock the depth ring. Tighten the thumbscrew (X, Fig.
7).
7. Push-in the micro-feed handle (Z, Fig.7) to engage
the hand wheel.
8. Turn the micro-feed hand (Z, Fig. 7) clockwise to
lower the spindle.

5.6 The Operation Cycle
1. Check that the head is secure.
Warning! Failure to lock the head handles can result in
damage of the machine and personal injury.
2. Secure the work piece to the table.
3. Adjust the table to the desired height. Use the front
or side crankshaft.
4. Use table lock crankshaft to lock the table. Attach
and rotate the riser handle clockwise.
5. Set the transmission mode. Use the Hi/Low gear
lever (J, Fig. 1).
6. Select drilling mode (H, Fig.1).
7. Set to manual mode. Check that the down-feed
levers (Fig. 9) are pushed in.
8. Set the drilling depth stop. For manual drilling or
tapping, set the front depth scale (M, Fig. 7). For
automatic drilling , set the down-feed side rings
scale (U, Fig.7). Refer to Setting the Depth Stop
(5.2).
9. Start the machine. Push the start button (A, Fig. 1).
10. Select the spindle speed (F, Fig.1).
5.6.1 In Drilling Mode
11. Lock in manual mode or select automatic
mode and feed rate. Turn handle (N, Fig. 9)
or Refer to Automatic Down-feed (5.4).
12. Begin drilling.
5.6.2 In Tapping Mode
In general, speeds for tapping require low
transmission mode with speeds lower than 150RPM.
*Tapping must be done in manual mode.
11. Set the down-feed rate to “0”. Use the
down-feed handle (L, Fig. 8). Refer to
Manual Down-feed (5.3).
12. Select the tapping mode (H, Fig.1).
13. Lock the down-feed levers (N, Fig. 9) in
position for manual down-feed. *Down-feed
must be lock to avoid accidental change to
auto down-feed mode while using the levers.
14. Release the unused depth stop. Loosen
handle (U, Fig. 7).
15. Start the machine. Push the start button (A,
Fig. 1).
16. Begin tapping. Use the down-feed levers to
enter the tapping bit in to the work-piece.
Then release hold of levers. The bit will
automatically reverse upon reaching the
depth stop.

6 Adjusting the machine
6.1 Removing the Tools from Spindle Bore
1. Disconnect machine from power supply.
2. Place a thin wood plank on the worktable to protect
the surface of the worktable.
3. Raise the worktable to about 250mm under the bit.
4. Lower the spindle about 150mm.
5. Place the drift key (Q, Fig.10) into the aperture (R,
Fig. 10) of the quill and tap the end of the drift key
(Q, Fig. 10) with a hammer until the bit or chuck
arbor falls down.
6.2 Suggested for reference
When the diameter of the tool object is more than
20mm and material is harder, it is recommended
to choose low RPM and slow of spindle down-feed
to ensure work safety and extend workability of
the machine. If the diameter is below 20mm, the
user may freely select the required speed and rate
of feeds on their own. The following chart is
provided for reference.
＊Note
When the bit has difficulty drilling or the spindle
bounces automatically during the process of
drilling, stop operation right away and check if the
bit is sharp or the material is too hard. If the
material is too hard, it is suggested to choose
lower rpm and smaller rate of feeds to protect the
bit and the machine as well as the safety of the
user. When the machine is used for heavy cutting
for a long period of the time, it is recommended to
check the loading capacity of automatic quill feeding on a
regular basis. If such capacity decreases, remove the name
plate (O1) at the left rear of the head and adjust in
accordance with the specified direction. It should be fine
when the user feels it tight enough. Never over-tighten it to
prevent the spring from fatigue and hazards during
operation. The worm gear needs to be maintained by adding
grease. Adding the grease to the worm gear is required for
regular maintenance. To inject the grease, use an injection
nozzle at the left rear of the head, please see (P1) label as
shown on the machine.

6.3 Cleaning and Accessing the coolant system
Cleaning is required when iron filings clog the screen
(B,Fig.6) at the bottom right corner of the water drain entry at
the base.
1 Uncover the base plate (P, Fig.11).
2 Loosen the screw (D, Fig.11) to remove the plate
and the fixed pump on it.
3 Remove the drain plug (C, Fig.12) at the rear wall of
the base.
4 Drain the coolant and clean out the iron filing in the
tank.
Please refer to the drawing C1 on the machine for clear
indication.
7 Lubrication and Routine Maintenance
Apply oils to the driving parts of the machine prior to operation and supply coolant during operation to
ensure stability of cutters and the object being processed. Please refer to the lubrication as below for
more details about use oil. To extend your machine life, please make a maintenance schedule daily,
weekly, monthly or semi-annual and annual. Neglecting the machine maintenance will result in
premature wear and poor performance.
7.1 Lubrication
1 Lubricate – Column, Quill and the nozzle as shown
on P1 at the rear of the head as mentioned in 6.2.
Use machine tool oil with light film of oil.
2 Grease – Rack on the column so that the worktable
can move up/down smoothly. Use SAE 20 oil. To
clean rack with kerosene before applying oil.
3 Gear Oil – Pay attention to the oil gauge at the mid
left of the head. Never allow the level below half of
the gauge. Use oil type JUQUAN HYDRALIC R68 or
equivalent oil. ESSO Sparten EP 68, Mobil
Mobilgear 626 and Shell Morlina 68 are equivalent.
3.1 Remove the cover (B76, Fig. 13) at the bottom of
the machine and screws 3/8PT (B01, Fig. 13) to
drain the oil during replacement.
3.2 Remove the name plate (Fig.14) on the left side of
the cover and the oil through the plastic tube. Fill the
oil at least half way through the gauge at the left of
the head. (minimum 2.5 liters)

7.2 Daily Maintenance
Make a general cleaning by removing dust and shavings from the machine.
Check that the shields and emergency stops are in good working order.
After daily use, disconnect machine from power source or press emergency stop switch to shut off the
power completely. Do not keep the machine connected over 24 hours, it may cause damage to the
machine.
7.3 Weekly Maintenance
Inspect if the screen is clogged by iron, thoroughly clean the machine including the coolant tank by
referring to 6.3.
Change the coolant water once a week, following stops in 6.3.
7.4 Monthly Maintenance
Lubricate machine column, spindle and rack devices.
Check that all screws on the motor, the pump and the guard are tight and secure on the right position.
7.5 Semi-annual Maintenance
Change the oil in the gear head using oil specified or its equivalent oil described in 7.1. Proceed by
following 7.1-3 lubrication.
Lubricate worm gear unit O1 at the left rear head, referring to 6.2 and 7.1.
7.6 Annual Maintenance
Change the driving belt using type OPTI-belt 720x8M and M5x1100-14.
7.7 Oils for Lubricating Coolant
Considering the vast range of products in the market, the user can choose the one most suited to
their own requirements, using as reference the type SHELL LUTEM OIL ECO.
THE MINIMUM PERCENTAGE OF OIL DILUTED IN WATER IS 8~10%.
7.8 Oil Disposal
Oil products must be disposed in a proper manner following local regulations.
7.9 Special Maintenance
Special maintenance operations must be carried out by skilled personnel. However, we advise
contacting dealer and/or importer the term special maintenance also covers the resetting of protection
and safety equipment and devices.
8 Troubleshooting
8.1 Troubleshooting the inverter
Prior to operating all electronic parts, the following aspects should be taken into consideration first
Note: Only eligible and qualified personnel can make electronic adjustments.
1. Disconnect machine from power supply.
2. Electronic parts are extremely sensitive, do not use hands or metal tools to remove or install such
parts.
3. As remaining voltage still exists in the capacitor even after the electric current has been cut off,
wait until the light disappears from the lighted display completely before proceeding with any
work to prevent any accidents or hazards from occurring.
4. Pay close attention to the electronic circuit board so that they are free from any defects.
5. Never connect the alternating current directly to the output connector (U/V/W) of the speed
adjuster. The electronic self-diagnosis program can notify you of situations like motor
overloading and too low or too high voltage, etc. When the program detects an error, the
machine will stop immediately and such error will be displayed on the inverter’s digital display.
Follow the solutions to correct any errors. Close the electrical cabinet and connect machine to
power supply.
