Scope of this Manual
This manual describes how to install, configure and operate the Innovx FastSwitch 24 Gigabit
Ethernet Switch. The information contained in this manual has been carefully checked and is
believed to be entirely reliable. This manual is intended for network administrators who are
responsible for installing, provisioning and managing the Innovx FastSwitch 24 device. It assumes
a basic working knowledge of Local area networks (LANs), Ethernet concepts, Ethernet switching
and bridging concepts and Internet Protocol (IP) concepts.

Safety Information
This manual should be read in its entirety and all procedures completely understood before
installing or operating the unit, including all notes, cautions and warnings (examples below). The
CAUTION, WARNING, and DANGER statements that appear throughout this manual are
intended to provide critical information for the safety of both the service engineer and operator.
These statements also enhance equipment reliability. The following definitions and symbols for
CAUTION, WARNING, and DANGER as they are used comply with ANSI Z535.2, American
National Standard for Environmental and Facility Safety Signs, and ANSI Z535.4, Product Safety
Signs and Labels, issued by the American National Standards Institute. .
Safety Guidelines
• Always use caution and common sense, especially when unsafe conditions or potentially
hazardous voltages are present.
• Repairs must be performed by qualified service personnel only.
• To reduce the risk of electrical shock, do not operate equipment with the cover removed.
• Never install telephone jacks in a wet location unless the jack is designed for that location.
• Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line is
disconnected at the network interface.
• Never install telephone wiring during an electrical storm.
Antistatic Precautions
This product may containstatic-sensitive devices that areeasily damaged by electrostatic discharge
(ESD). ESD occurs when a person whose body has built up static electricity touches a computer
component. ESD can cause computer components to fail. Take proper handling, grounding and
precautionary ESD measures when installing parts or cards. Keep parts and cards in antistatic
packaging when not in use or during transport. If possible, use antistatic pads on floor and
workbench. When handling components, always use an antistatic wrist strap connected to a
grounded equipment frame or chassis. If a wrist strap is not available, periodically touch an
unpainted metal surface on the equipment. Never use a conductive tool, like a screwdriver or a
paper clip, to set switches.

Chapter 1: Introduction &
Specifications
Product Overview
The FastSwitch 24 (FS-24) is a low-cost Gigabit Ethernet switch device that combines Ethernet
connectivitywith the Layer 2 and Layer2+ features required in Enterprise LAN-based applications.
The device provides 24 ports of 10/100 Mbps and two ports of 10/100/1000 Mbps. Each port can
be configured for auto-sensing or manually selected to run at the desired speed. The non-blocking
architecture enables optimal wire-speed network processing. Also configurable are full/half-duplex
mode control and enable/disable of flow control. The FastSwitch 24 supports 8000 MAC addresses
and 2000 VLANS.
Intended Use
The Innovx FastSwitch 24 (Figure 1-1) is a stand-alone device that can be deployed as a
replacement to legacy hubs or in new installations where Fast Ethernet switching is desired. The
FastSwitch 24 provides efficient, front panel access to twenty-four 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet
ports. The front panel also includes status LEDs for all the ports including uplink ports. The robust
features of the FS-24 help remove server bottlenecks, extend the network size, and speed up access
time for all users. FastSwitch 24 is easily deployed throughout the enterprise network with hassle-
free setup, exceptional reliability and no configuration required.
Two front panel slots accept optional feature cards and plug-in modules which provide value-added
fiber/copper uplinks:
• 1000 Base TX feature card supports auto-negotiation and master/slave clock modes.
• 1000 Mbps SFP feature card accepts customer-supplied plug-in module (SX or LX).

Management Access
The FastSwitch 24 provides management access interfaces for local and remote configuration,
management and monitoring the device at its Serial port, Ethernet Service ports and Ethernet Line
ports. Serial port and Ethernet Service ports provide out-of-band interfaces (CLMI and CLI)
dedicated to switch management. Ethernet Line ports provide in-band interfaces (CLI, WEB and
SNMP) for the user's network and for switch management. Each interface is described below.
Console Menu Line Interface
The Console Menu Line Interface (CMLI) provides a menu-oriented interface for configuring and
monitoring the FS-24 switch. Users can access this interface only at the serial port.
Console Line Interface
Console Line Interface (CLI) commands allow the user to configure the Spanning Tree Protocol,
VLAN, MAC Filter, Port Security, 802.1x, and other functions of the FS-24. Users can alsomonitor
traps, perform service port configuration, etc. CLI commands are executed at the serial port
interface or via a Telnet session.
Web Browser Interface
The FS-24 canbe configured and managed viaa graphical interface using a web browser. Realtime
events such as alarms and statistics can also be monitored using the web interface.
Simple Network Management Protocol
The FS-24 switch provides an embedded SNMP agent for management access via an external
SNMP manager, such as HP OpenView. The FS-24 forwards SNMP statistics and traps so that an
SNMP manager can receive RMON statistics and port alarm traps sent from the switch.

Figure 1-2 shows FastSwitch 24 devices at the Corporate Office providing up to 24 auto-sensing
10/100 copper ports for flexible desktop and workgroup connectivity. One gigabit per second
uplink provides fast ethernet connectivity to the supporting server. In addition, a second gigabit link
extends the ethernet switch density to 48 ports. Forwarding rates up to 9.6 million packets per
second, non-blocking architecture and resiliency features such as Fast Spanning Tree Protocol and
link aggregation are supported on all ports.
When the Innovx FastSwitch 24 is deployedwith companion Innovx access products, an enterprise
network can be extended to cost-effectively reach branch offices. The Innovx FastRoute device
establishes a secure and reliable LAN extension between floors or between buildings, eliminating
expensive routers. The Innovx FastSwitch 9- or 18-Port devices provide scalable ethernet
connectivity to the LAN-attached equipment at remote sites.

Chapter 2: Installation & Connections
Overview
This chapter describes installing and setting up the FastSwitch 24 device, connecting the device to
the network, making power connections, performing pre-operational checks, and making craft
connections. If this is your first installation of FastSwitch 24, be sure to read the previous sections
of this manual to understand the optimal functioning of the FastSwitch 24 product as it applies to
your network. Perform setups, connections, and pre-operation checks in their entirety.
Unpacking Instructions
The FastSwitch 24 device is shipped in shock-absorbent packing within a corrugated box.
Table 2-1 lists the standard and optional FastSwitch 24 equipment. Some components will not be
required/supplied foryour network installation. Remove each component from the box and perform
a thorough inspection. If any component appears damaged, contact the shipper immediately. All
damaged components must be retained until an inspection by the shipper has been completed. If
necessary to re-package and return the unit, use the original box and packing material.t
Note For cable part numbers, the -XXX designation refers to cable length, in feet.

Front/Rear Panel Features
Table 2-2 describes LED action for each configuration of the FastSwitch 24 and its optional plug-
in components.The Front panel LEDs assistthe user in monitoring and diagnosing the health of the
FS-24 device by identifying the port status, the data transmission or receive activity, and the link
speed (10/100/1000Mbps). Table 2-3 decribes front and rear panel connectors.

Installing Uplink Components
The feature cards and plug-in modules are hot swappable; they can be installed in the FS-24 front
panel slots without powering down or resetting the device. To install these optional uplink
components, follow the guidelines below.
1. Insert the TX or SFP feature card in an available expansion slot at the FS-24 front panel.
2. Install the desired plug-in module (SX or LX) in the SFP feature card port.
3. Tighten thumbscrews.
4. Connect the appropriate cable for the interface.
Note Detailed information and specifications each Innovx feature card is provided in
Appendix A, Application Guidelines .

Getting Started
The following paragraphs describe setting up the management station for the FS-24.
Naming Ports
Ports on the Innovx FastSwitch 24 can be physical “fixed” Ethernet ports (FEP), a single port on a
user-installed uplink feature card, or a logical trunk in the FS-24 switch. Each port is referred to
using the following naming convention:
<slot-number>.<port-number>
where:
<slot-number> represents the port type and <port number> represents the number of the
physical port within the selected port type.
• Slot 0 denotes the fixed 24 x 10/100 fixed Ethernet ports (FEP).
• Slot 1 represents an uplink port on a user-installed feature card.
• Slot 2 is represents the logical trunk port.
<port-number> is the number assigned to the port. The range and assignment of port numbers
varies by the slot type. The assignment of port numbers by slot number is shown in the table below:
Note In this document, some alternative notations are also used to refer to the port numbers:
PORT#. Refers to physical ports. For example, PORT8 is equivalent to 0.8, and PORT25 and 26 refer to 1.1
and 1.2 respectively.
TRUNK#. Refers to logical trunk ports. For example, TRUNK3 is equivalent to 2.3.
Terminal Access Setup
The RS-232 serial interface is located on the FS-24 rear panel and is used to locally manage the
device. To set up a management station, connect any terminal with VT100 terminal emulation
capabilities using a standard RS-232 serial cable. Configure the management station with the
following terminal settings for serial communication:
• Baud Rate = 19200
• Data Bits = 8
• Parity = none
• Stop Bits = 1
• Flow Control = none
