IDC Series - Counting Scale

IDC Printing –Setup and Operation

IDC counting scale results printed using OX-2130D to permanent labels

Overview.

The IDC series counting scale from Intelligent Weighing Technology Inc (IWTI) is equipped with a

single DB9 serial port for use with a printer for hardcopy report or to Windows computer for e-

recordkeeping. IDC may be configured with limited RS232 settings, print formats for line or special

label printer, and an option for auto print setting in association with the accumulation function.

This document is an addendum to the IDC user manual intended to clarify feature setup and print

operation for dealers and users. “Print” is used here to mean “weigh and/or count data with

descriptive labels” sent from IDC over RS232 to either a printer or to a computer COM port.

IDC print configuration setup is detailed step by step. Examples are provided of all IDC print format

configuration settings. Refer to each printer manual for printer setup and operation.

Document revision history

This first release addendum is expected to apply to all IDC series shipped in 2014 to present –

including all earlier firmware back to at least U237-C. Contact IWTI Applications with IDC serial

number to verify date of shipment or for assistance in verifying firmware on any IDC.

Compatible IWTI Printers

Compatible line printers, label printers (and media supplies) are available from IWTI, including printer

models OIP-100, OTP-200, and OX-2130D, as described below.

OIP-100 is legacy impact RS232 line printer that prints using inked replaceable ribbons on normal “2”

roll paper (receipt), either single or dual ply (for original and copy).

OTP-200 is modern thermal RS232 line printer that prints using heat (not inked ribbons) on normal 2”

roll thermal paper or a special 2” thermal roll “liner-less” self-adhesive media for removable labeling.

OX-2130D is a thermal RS232 label printer that prints using heat on right sized nominal 2”x2” white

permanent thermal labels rolls with backing. IDC label format ONLY supports OX-2130D label printer.

Required RS232 cables for IDC scale to printer - are included with IWTI printers

Any IWTI printer purchased with IDC series counting scale with be configured, tested, and shipped

with all serial cables from scale to printer. See later in document for standard configuration.

Any IWTI printer purchased later for use with IDC scale previously purchased can be shipped with

tested cable for use with IDC scales, if printer purchase order is clearly marked “Configure for IDC”.

IDC configuration check or reset may still be required at install due to user settings changes.

Required RS232 cables for IDC scale to computer - are optional and availabe

Normally most RS232 bulkhead connectors on scales are DB9F and are wired to allow a normal

DB9M to DB9F straight-through cable to connect to DB9M serial connector on a Windows computer,

or DB9M connector on RS232 to USB adapter –for newer computer. This is not the case for IDC.

The IDC RS232 DB9F port requires a “null modem” (pin 2 to 3 crossed) wired connection for

computer communications. Null modem adapters (available from IWTI or other commercial sources)

may be added to “straight through” DB9M-DB9F serial cables for IDC use with computers.

Limited options for using non-IWTI printers with IDC

Non-IWTI line printers whether supplied by dealer or user may also work with IDC if careful

consideration is made of cabling requirements and minimum printer specifications. IWTI may provide

limited technical dealer or user support for third-party printer integration with IDC at its sole discretion

but in all cases, serial cabling will be the responsibility of the dealer or user.

Non-IWTI label printers whether supplied by dealer or user are not expected to work with IDC. The

IDC label print (page) format is permanently encoded in IDC firmware, and is programmed only for

the special label printer commands, and label media size supplied as option for IDC. There is no

IWTI, dealer, or user option for changing the IDC label format for use with any other label printer.

Configuring and Connecting - IDC for use with IWTI RS232 Printer

If you have purchased a IWTI printer with the IDC then the basic configuration is already completed.

With both IDC printer and printer powered off –connect the DB9M cable end to the IDC DB9F (at the

back left side of IDC) –then connect the DB9F end of the cable to the DB9M cable already connected

to the printer.

Do not connect the printer cable to the IDC using the DB9F connector closest to front at left side. That

DB9F connector for connecting the load cell of an external scale external –not RS232

IWTI printers are typically factory configured by default for RS232 settings as follows: Baud: 9600

baud, Data bits: 8, Parity: none, Stop bits: 1. The standard practice in IWTI pre-ship configuration for

scales sold with printers is change RS232 setting on scale to match default printer settings of 9600,8,

N,1. If a scale was purchased with printer, this configuration will have already been done by IWTI. If

the printer was purchased later for use with existing IDC, then the printer will be checked and set to

9600,8,N,1 - if not already. The IDC will then need to be checked to be sure it is still set to the IDC

default of 9600,8,N,1.

Note: Default IDC RS232 setting is 9600,8,N,1 for most recent units. The current IDC manual

incorrectly states the RS232 default is 4800,8,N,1.

Detail

The scales to printer cable is a DB9

For use with MBS software on a Local Server by COM port, the AJ-MBS scale settings are factory

default, except for output, which is set to continuous. The RS232 settings are all factory default,

except for baud rate, which is set to 9600.

See page 2 for Configuring AJ-MBS scales to MBS software by COM port using:

1) AJ-MBS serial cable with DB9F, 2) Windows computer with DB9M COM or added DB9M by

RS232-to-USB adapter - connected to powered USB, and 3) Compatible MBS COM based

software set to match AJ-MBS scale COM port.

a. Computer administrator rights are required to install VCOM driver (if needed) and optional CTS test

software.

AJ-MBS scales also work with cloud based MBS software using a hardware or software wedge.

AJ-MBS Setup Procedure: For locally served MBS using COM ports

1) Step 1 - Setup AJ-MBS scale configuration for COM operation.

a. The parameter menu in the AJ-MBS scale is opened by holding down the key

until display changes to “Func”,then key is released.

i. Set parameter 71. o.c. to value 1 (Output: Continuous at all times)

ii. Set parameter 72. b.L. to value 4 (for Baud rate: 9600)

1. See Appendix A for detailed instruction for setting scale.

b. Then press key to save setup - scale will return weigh mode in seconds.

c. The scale and scale serial port are now set to…

i. Continuous, Baud:9600, Parity:N, Databits:8, StopBits:2, FlowCont:None

2) Step 2 - Connect the Scale to Computer by COM port.

a. With scale unplugged from power, unplugged from computer, and computer off

i. Turn on computer - continue when Windows initialized –with view of desktop.

ii. If RS232-to-USB adapter will be used –install driver - if not already done so.

1. RS232-to-USB adapter operation may be validated with optional CTS software and

loopback connector. See Appendix B for validation using CTS software.

iii. If you are not sure of the computer COM or VCOM port used for adapter.

1. check in Device Manager - Control Panel in Windows

b. Connect scale to computer using AJ-MBS serial cable.

i. Scale should be powered off and unplugged before connecting to computer

ii. Using AJ-MBS serial cable - connect scale DIN5 connector to DB9M on computer.

c. Plug in scale power cable and turn on scale.

i. The scale initializes, a weight value is seen on the scale display, the scale output is continuously

and automatically sent over the AJ-MBS serial cable and the RS232-to-USB adapter (if used) to

the to the connected computer COM port.

d. Optional - Step 2.d –Validate scale to computer by COM link (see Appendix B).

i. Scale to computer by COM link can be validated with CTS Software and loopback device.

1. Before Appendix B testing, power off scale, but leave scale connected to computer.

2. Upon returning from Appendix B, close CTS software –if not already done.

3) Step 3 –Using Scale with MBS Software by COM.

a. If returning to this step, after CTS COM testing in Appendix B, check that CTS is closed.

b. Setup MBS software COM link –following MBS software manufacturer instructions.

i. Set the COM/RS232 setting in MBS software to match scale

1. Set the scale model for emulation as recommended by your scale supplier.

2. Same COM port number as for scale in step 2.a.iii above.

3. Same RS232 settings as for scale in step 1.ci., Continuous,9600,N,8,2

c. The MBS software should now be ready for use with the scale.

i. The weigh entry fields in the MBS software will be continuously updated with weight.

d. If scale weigh data is not seen in MBS software…

i. Proceed to Appendix B for CTS Test 1 and CTS Test 2 –if not already done so.

ii. If scale to MBS software link by COM is still not working –contact your service provider

1. Setup CTS –for scale to computer COM link testing

a. If RS232-to-USB adapter will be used - install device driver - if not already done.

i. Install driver for RS232-to-USB adapter and VCOM per adapter instructions.

ii. After installation, check COM port assigned in Windows, as found in Control

Panel –Device Manger port listing, i.e.

b. Download and install CTS Test Software from MicroRidge web site.

i. See Appendix C for CTS download instructions

c. Run and Setup CTS RS232 Settings - for scale to computer testing as below.

i. Run CTS software - screen view below (with setup window opened)

ii. Serial ports setup - Press button (lower right corner) to open window

1. Set COM port to scale COM port (select in check box at left).

2. Set RS232 for scale - Baud:9600, Parity:N, Databit: 8, Stopbits:2

iii. Click to close setup window.

d. CTS is now ready to test scale to computer link over COM port.

2. CTS Test 1 –scale output validation

a. Setup CTS - as in Appendix B.1 above (if not already done so)

i. Leave CTS open, but press once –to close CTS COM port

ii. Circle will change from green to red, and button will grey out

iii. Power off scale, OK to leave plugged into power and connected to computer.

b. Setup Scale –as in Step 1 to Step 2a on page 2 (if not already done so)

c. CTS Test 1 - with scale parameter set, connected to computer, and powered off...

i. Plug in / Turn on scale - after initialization is complete, press on scale.

1. The scale display should show “0.00 g”

ii. Press in CTS. The COM port opens ( )

iii. Scale weigh data should appear in CTS window as below

d. CTS Test 1 - Test Results Interpretation

i. The CTS display should look as below with updates of one per second or faster.

ii. This test will validate either type COM port, real COM or VCOM, since both are

connected to the scale using a physical DB9M connector outside the computer.

iii. The CTS Test 1 independently validates the same scale to computer COM link to

be used by MBS software. CTS Test 1 means

iv. If CTS Test 1 –Scale Output Validation is passed, Scale is ready for MBS.

1. CTS MUST be closed after test - before running MBS software

2. Then return to Step 3 on page 2, MBS software setup.

v. If CTS Test 1 –Scale Output Validation is failed, Scale is not ready for MBS.

1. Make Screen Capture of CTS Test 1 screen –for later review.

a. Open the Serial Ports setting window in CTS (same as on page 4)

and position the window so the collected data may be seen.

b. Use Windows screen capture, or Snipping Tool (found in Windows

Accessories programs), or a cell phone, to record the full CTS

screen. Save this screen capture for later technical review.

2. Proceed to CT2 Test 2 –COM Validation on next page.

3. CTS Test 2 –COM validation - COM, VCOM, or RS232-USB adapter

a. CTS Test 2 –Requires DB9F loopback test device

i. CTS setup for scale serial port settings –as on page 4, Steps 1a to 1d.

ii. DB9F Loopback connector - to validate RS232 over ports and adapters.

b. CTS Test 2 –Setup CTS

i. CTS should be setup for as in CTS Test 1 scales test

1. CTS should be running, if not –run CTS.

a. Be sure all setting are for AJ-MBS as in CTS Test 1

b. Then close CTS COM port - same as done on page 5, steps 2.a.i

c. CTS Test 2 –Disconnect Scale from Computer

i. Important –Must first turn off scale and unplug power adapter

ii. Disconnect RS232 cable from scale at computer DB9M COM port.

iii. Place DB9F loopback connector on DB9M on computer

d. CTS Test 2 –COM Validation

i. Turn on CTS COM port –same as done on page 5, steps 2.c,ii

ii. Type a message “Test Loopback” in lower CTS window as below

iii. Press button - at right of window

iv. Test pass - green and yellow message in the upper CTS windows as below

v. Test fail - only the green message - yellow message is missing

e. CTS Test 2 –Test Results Interpretation

i. If CTS Test 2 –COM Validation Pass, COM port link is validated…

1. From application software (CTS) using COM port…

2. …to Windows O.S. internal COM (and any drivers for VCOM)…

3. …to physical DB9M COM port on computer

4. …or to VCOM port used with RS232-to-USB adapter.

ii. Conclusion: CTS Test 2 Pass –scale to computer fault is NOT due to…

1. Hardware, firmware or driver fault in systems or devices below…

a. External RS232-to-USB adapter or Internal VCOM driver

b. External USB port or Internal Windows USB or COM.

iii. Conclusion: CTS Test 2 Fail –means scale to computer link fault is…

1. Likely due to scale settings, or scale serial cable.

2. Recheck scale setting

a. If scale setting correct, fault is likely scale serial port or serial cable

3. Contact your scale service provider for assistance.

a. How the COM Validation “Loopback” Testing works.

i. Loopback testing is a commonly used bidirectional RS232 communication test

from a software application, internally through the computer operating system,

and out to the external physical DB9M connector.

1. The green text is original typed in message - sent from CTS to COM port

2. The yellow text is the same message “echoed” back from the DB9M end

of the COM or VCOM port by the loopback device.

ii. The loopback device connects the RS232 transmitted line to the received line.

1. The message is seen by CTS, as a new message from an external device.

2. Strictly this test works for any RS232 setting in CTS, since the same CTS

setting are used for both sending and receiving.

3. But since CTS was set to scale setting before testing, passing means

RS232 link has been independently validated for the COM or VCOM port

to application software on same settings needed for scale to MBS link.

iii. Typically loopback failure is caused by physical connection fault, though

embedded system faults can also be cause.

b. Cautions when using RS232 extension cables with scales.

i. The loopback device can be put at the other end of added straight through

RS232 cables extensions - for COM Validation over cable extensions.

ii. If a null modem cable is used by mistake as RS232 cable extension, the CTS

Test 2 and loopback device will NOT detect this fault.

1. A null modem extension cable will pass CTS Test 2 - but fail CTS Test 1.

2. The mistaken use of a null modem cable extension can be confirmed by

the addition of a null modem adapter, which will restore the correct signals

to the correct RS232 connector pins.

Appendix C - Free download of test software for scale RS232 Communication

ComTestSerial (CTS) is available as free download from MicroRidge Systems Incorporated.

CTS is terminal emulator software, which may be for used for testing bidirectional RS232 on scales. It

is a handy and very user-friendly replacement for Hyperterm, which is no longer included in Windows.

MicroRidge is a trusted long term supplier of commercial connectivity products, including connectivity

software and hardware for use with industrial equipment, test equipment, gauges, and scales. CTS

software and complete instructions can be found on the MicroRidge web site. Download this
