Connectin your Speaker System
Always switch off the power to the amplifier before connecting speakers.
Choosin the Correct Speaker Cable
It is important to choos cabling d signat d for audio us and good quality conn ctors. Using guitar cabl or
zip cord (d sign d for lamps and oth r l ctrical us ) or poor quality conn ctors will d grad your
loudsp ak rs’ audio p rformanc . For distribut d loudsp ak r syst ms, w r comm nd strand d twist d pair
sp ak r cabl with an ov rall vinyl jack t (pl num rat d wh n install d in r quir d installations).
Always us th appropriat gaug of sp ak r cabl . For cabl runs of l ss than 25 f t (7.5 m t rs), 18- gaug
cabl is ad quat . For long r cabl s, w sugg st 16-gaug strand d cabl .
Speaker Connection Procedures
Aft r r moving approximat ly 10mm (1/4-inch) of insulation from th nds of th sp ak r cabl s, twist th
strands tightly and th n twist tog th r with th distribution cabl (s), using an appropriat cabl conn ctor.
Mak c rtain th wir s do not protrud from th cabl conn ctor and touch any m tal on th sp ak r chassis, or
any oth r adjac nt m tal.
Maintainin Proper Polarity
It is v ry important to wir your sp ak rs consist ntly in ord r to maintain prop r polarity. All quality cabl s ar
manufactur d with cl ar markings to id ntify th diff r nt conductors – normally by color-coding, print d
markings, or t xtur d ribbing on th cabl ’s jack t mat rial. Failing to do so will caus your sp ak rs to op rat
out of phas , r sulting in significantly r duc d low-fr qu ncy output from your syst m.
Choosin the Correct Amplification
Wh n s l cting an amplifi r for us with your distribut d sp ak r syst m, it is important to choos an amplifi r
that has suffici nt pow r output.
Choosing an amplifi r that do s not hav ad quat rat d pow r may r sult in pushing th amp b yond its limits,
producing distortion or “clipping” of th signal. This can irritat th list n r and may caus damag to th sp ak r.
Choosing an amplifi r that is ov r-pow r d can r sult in ov r-driving th sp ak r syst m.
