Contoura™ Back and Seat Cushions
To ensure the safe operation and use of the Contoura Back and Cushion, these instructions MUST be
followed:
DANGER
Risk of Death, Serious Injury or Damage
Improper use of this product may cause injury or damage.
If you are unable to understand the warnings, cautions or instructions, contact a health care
professional or dealer before attempting to use this equipment.
• DO NOT use this product or any available optional equipment without first completely reading
and understanding these instructions and any additional instructional material such as user
manual, service manuals or instruction sheets supplied with this product or optional
equipment.
Continued use of the wheelchair with damaged parts could lead to the wheelchair
malfunctioning, causing injury to the user and/or caregiver.
• Check all wheelchair components and carton for damage and test components before use. In
case of damage or if the wheelchair is not working properly, contact a qualified technician or
Invacare for repair.
WARNING
Risk of Serious Injury or Damage
Use of non-Invacare accessories may result in serious injury or damage.
• Invacare products are specifically designed and manufactured for use in conjunction with
Invacare accessories. Accessories designed by other manufacturers have not been tested by
Invacare and are not recommended for use with Invacare products.
• DO NOT use non-Invacare accessories.
• To obtain Invacare accessories, contact Invacare by phone or at www.invacare.com.
Attaching hardware that is loosely secured could cause loss of stability resulting in serious injury
or damage.
After ANY adjustments, repair or service and before use, make sure that all attaching hardware
is tightened securely.
WARNING
The Contoura Cushion is NOT designed for use in the treatment of pressure sores.
Skin condition should be checked very frequently after the installation of any new cushion.
Your therapist and physician should be consulted if you have any questions regarding pressure
relief, self-examination of the skin, or individual limitations and needs.

WARNING

Exceeding the weight capacity could cause instability resulting in death or serious injury.
• DO NOT exceed the weight capacity.
NOTE: The Contoura Back has a weight limitation of 400 lbs.
NOTE: The Contoura Seat Cushion has a weight limitation of 500 lbs.
Important Information
The best way to avoid problems related to pressure injury is to understand their causes and your role in a
skin management program.
All seats should be selected carefully. Working with your therapist, and physician is the best way to assure
that a seat choice matches your individual needs. As the needs of the individual become more complex, the
seat evaluation becomes more important.
Introduction
Contoura Back
The Contoura Back is designed to provide back support that is lightweight and comfortable for the user.
The back provides gentle support and facilitates postural symmetry. It provides a stable surface for
propulsion and completion of daily living activities.
Contoura Cushion
The Contoura Cushion is designed to provide both pelvic stability and comfort for the user.
Cushion Cover
The cushion cover is made from a water resistant fabric to protect the foam. The top is fabricated from a
stretch fabric. The bottom is fabricated from a heavyweight, non-skid fabric.
Inspection and Cleaning
Perform weekly visual inspections of parts including hardware, brackets, upholstery materials, foams
(if accessible), and plastics, for deformation, corrosion, breakage, wear or compression.
Contoura Back
Wipe the back clean with a dampened cloth. Wipe the entire surface clean at least once a week.
Contoura Cushion
Regular cleaning and inspection of the cushion and cushion cover are recommended.
NOTE: DO NOT continue to use this product if any of the upholstery materials, foams, and/or plastics are found to be
deformed, breaking, worn, and/or compressed. Corrective maintenance can be performed at or arranged through your
equipment supplier.
Back Cover and Cushion Cover
Machine wash the back cover and cushion cover in cold water on gentle cycle using a mild detergent.

Foam
Wipe the foam with a damp cloth. DO NOT submerge or soak.
Attaching/Removing the Seat Cushion To/From Seating Surface
NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGURE 1.
NOTE: To remove the seat cushion from a seating surface, reverse the following procedures.
NOTE: The seat cushion attaches to the seating surface using the hook and loop fasteners on the bottom of the cushion
cover. The seating surface can be seat upholstery, drop base or seat pan.
NOTE: The zipper on the seat cushion MUST ALWAYS face rearward.
WARNING
Make sure the hook and loop fasteners are securely attached to the seating surface and to the seat
BEFORE using. If the cushion is not secured to the seating surface, use caution when transferring in
and out of the wheelchair.
Hook Attachment Strips/No Attachment Strips
1. Remove double sided hook from bottom of cushion.
2. Align front edge of cushion with front edge of seating surface.
3. Perform one of the following:
• Hook Attachment Strips - Secure the cushion to the seating surface, making sure that the strips of
loop on the cushion cover are securely attached to the strips of hook on the seating surface.
• No Attachment Strips - Place the cushion on the seating surface.
Loop Attachment Strips
1. Verify the double sided hook strips are securely attached to the loop attachment strips on the bottom of
the cushion.
2. Align front edge of cushion with front edge of seating surface.
3. Secure the cushion to the seating surface, making sure that the double sided hook is securely attached to
the strips of loop on the cushion cover and the seating surface.

Installing/Removing the Seat Cushion Cover
WARNING
The cushion cover is designed to protect the foam from moisture and to provide fire retardency. DO
NOT use the cushion without the cushion cover. If the cover is torn, it MUST be replaced
IMMEDIATELY.
NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGURE 1.
NOTE: To remove the seat cushion cover, reverse this procedure.
1. Slide the seat cushion into the cushion cover.
2. Zip the cushion cover closed.
3. Reattach cushion onto seating surface. Refer to Attaching/Removing the Seat Cushion To/From Seating
Surface on page 3.
Installing/Removing the Back Cushion
NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGURE 2.
NOTE: To remove the back cushion, reverse this procedure.
NOTE: If necessary, remove the head rest to install or remove the back cushion. Refer to the seating system owner’s
manual.
NOTE: Ensure the rectangular opening in the top flap of the back cushion upholstery fits around the headrest mounting
bracket (if present).
1. Put the top flap of the back cushion upholstery over the top of the Contoura back pan.
NOTE: There are no hook-and-loop strips on the back of the mesh back cushion cover. The back of the back cushion cover
will secure to the hook and loop strips on the Contoura back.
2. Secure the cushion to the back frame with the hook-and-loop strips on the front of the Contoura back
and the back of the cushion upholstery.

Installing/Removing the Back Cushion Cover

NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGURE 3.
NOTE: To remove the back cushion from the back
cushion cover, reverse this procedure.
1. Slide the back cushion into the vertical
opening of the back cushion cover.
2. Zip the back cushion cover closed.
3. Fold the top flap of upholstery over the
cushion as shown in FIGURE 3.
4. Install the back cushion to the back frame.

NOTE: To remove the back cushion from the back

1. Slide the back cushion into the horizontal
opening of the back cushion cover.
2. Ensure the bottom edge of the opening is
tucked under the top edge of the opening as
shown in FIGURE 4.
3. Install the back cushion to the back frame.

Installing/Removing/Adjusting the Lumbar Support Wedge
NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGURE 5.
NOTE: The back cushion cover attaches to the back pan with hook and loop strips.
To install the Lumbar Support Wedge
1. Release the back cushion and cover from the bottom of the back pan.
2. Attach the hook and loop strips on the lumbar support wedge to the hook and loop strips on the back
pan at the desired position. Adjust the lumbar support wedge as necessary.
3. Attach the back cushion cover to the back pan when finished.
To remove or adjust the Lumbar Support Wedge
1. Release the back cushion and cover from the bottom of the back pan and remove or adjust the lumbar
support wedge as necessary.
2. Attach the back cushion cover to the back pan when finished.

LIMITED WARRANTY

LIMITED WARRANTY
PLEASE NOTE: THE WARRANTY BELOW HAS BEEN DRAFTED TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL LAW
APPLICABLE TO PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED AFTER JULY 4, 1975.
This warranty is extended only to the original purchaser/user of our products.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may also have other legal rights which vary from state to state.
Invacare warrants the Contoura Back and Seat cushions to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a
period of two years from the date of purchase from Invacare or a dealer, with a copy of the seller’s invoice required for
coverage under this warranty. Invacare warrants the Contoura Cushion to be free from defects in materials and
workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the date of purchase from Invacare or a dealer, with a copy of the
seller’s invoice required for coverage under this warranty. The cushion cover is warranted for a period of 90 days of use
by the original purchaser. If within such warranty period any such product shall be proven to be defective, such product
shall be repaired or replaced, at Invacare's option. This warranty does not include any labor or shipping charges
incurred in replacement part installation or repair of any such product. Invacare's sole obligation and your exclusive
remedy under this warranty shall be limited to such repair and/or replacement.
For warranty service, please contact the dealer from whom you purchased your Invacare product. In the event you do
not receive satisfactory warranty service, please write directly to Invacare at the address on the back cover. Provide
dealer's name, address, model number, and the date of purchase, indicate nature of the defect and, if the product is
serialized, indicate the serial number.
Invacare Corporation will issue a return authorization. The defective unit or parts must be returned for warranty
inspection using the serial number, when applicable, as identification within thirty days of return authorization date.
DO NOT return products to our factory without our prior consent. C.O.D. shipments will be refused; please prepay
shipping charges.
LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS: THE FOREGOING WARRANTY SHALL NOT APPLY TO SERIAL
NUMBERED PRODUCTS IF THE SERIAL NUMBER HAS BEEN REMOVED OR DEFACED, PRODUCTS SUBJECT
TO NEGLIGENCE, ACCIDENT, IMPROPER OPERATION, MAINTENANCE OR STORAGE, COMMERCIAL OR
INSTITUTIONAL USE, PRODUCTS MODIFIED WITHOUT INVACARE'S EXPRESS WRITTEN CONSENT
INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, MODIFICATION THROUGH THE USE OF UNAUTHORIZED PARTS OR
ATTACHMENTS; PRODUCTS DAMAGED BY REASON OF REPAIRS MADE TO ANY COMPONENT WITHOUT
THE SPECIFIC CONSENT OF INVACARE, OR TO A PRODUCT DAMAGED BY CIRCUMSTANCES BEYOND
INVACARE'S CONTROL, AND SUCH EVALUATION WILL BE SOLELY DETERMINED BY INVACARE. THE
WARRANTY SHALL NOT APPLY TO PROBLEMS ARISING FROM NORMAL WEAR OR FAILURE TO ADHERE
TO THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
THE FOREGOING EXPRESS WARRANTY IS EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ANY OTHER WARRANTIES
WHATSOEVER, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND THE SOLE REMEDY FOR
VIOLATIONS OF ANY WARRANTY WHATSOEVER, SHALL BE LIMITED TO REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF
THE DEFECTIVE PRODUCT PURSUANT TO THE TERMS CONTAINED HEREIN, THE APPLICATION OF ANY
IMPLIED WARRANTY WHATSOEVER SHALL NOT EXTEND BEYOND THE DURATION OF THE EXPRESS
WARRANTY PROVIDED HEREIN. INVACARE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL OR
INCIDENTAL DAMAGES WHATSOEVER.
THIS WARRANTY SHALL BE EXTENDED TO COMPLY WITH STATE/PROVINCIAL LAWS AND
REQUIREMENTS.
