iPort FS-2 Series User manual

Introduction
The iPort FS-2 Balanced Audio and Balanced Video Kits
allow the iPort to deliver long-distance balanced audio
and video up to 500 feet. The Balanced Audio Kit also
allows extensive long-distance IR or RS-232 control of
iPod®functions from a compatible 3rd-party controller.
Box Contents
The iPort FS-2 Balanced Audio and Balanced Video Kit
boxes should contain the following items:
• (1) Balanced audio or video sender wallplate
• (1) Balanced audio or video receiver wallplate
• (1) DC power supply
• (2) Decora®wallplate inserts and screws
Installation
IMPORTANT: Do not plug the iPort’s DC power supply
into a wall outlet until all system connections have
been made.
1. Select locations for the various system components.
Figure 1
(page 2) shows all of the components that can
be used in an iPort balanced audio/video system.
The balanced audio/video sender and receiver
wallplates should be mounted into walls using
standard single or dual electrical boxes. The audio and
video sender wallplates can share a double box, as can
the audio and video receiver wallplates.
IMPORTANT: Do not install an iPort wallplate in the
same electrical box as AC house wiring, a light switch
or any other high-voltage device or control. The
wallplates can share gang boxes with each other or
with other controls such as A/B speaker switches,
infrared receivers, and volume controls if these other
devices are rated as Class 2 devices according to the
National Electrical Code.
2. As shown in
Figure 1
(page 2), run lengths of Cat5
cable through the wall between the sender and receiver
wallplate locations. The maximum length for either
Cat5 cable is 500 feet.
3. Install RJ-45 connectors on both ends of the Cat5
cables as explained in the
Cat5/RJ-45 Cable Wiring
sidebar in the next column.

Cat5/RJ-45 Cable Wiring
All RJ-45 cables used in iPort installations must be
wired according to the T568A Standard (“Straight-
Through”) with connectors wired identically at both
ends.
To prepare Cat5/RJ-45 cables for iPort installations:
1. Pull the Cat5 wire through the wall between the
desired locations.
2. Use a stripper or knife to strip about 1” of the cable
jacket off each end of the wire.
• Be careful
not to nick
any of the
individual
wires.
3. Untwist the
wire pairs
and spread
them flat.
Arrange
them as
shown in the
diagram.
4. Trim the ends of the individual wires to ½” in length,
making sure that they are even with each other.
Flatten the wires against each other, leaving no
space between them.
5. Hold the RJ-45 connector clip side-down and insert
the Cat5 wire ends firmly into the connector. Make
sure that all the wires are flat all the way to the very
front of the connector.
6. Re-confirm that the color orientation matches the
diagram and that cable jacket fits against the con-
nector stop.
7. Firmly crimp the RJ-45 connector with a crimp tool.
Confirm that the connector is crimped firmly and
that all the wires are flat right up against the front of
the connector. If even one of these wires is incorrect,
cut the connector off the cable and repeat steps
2 – 7 with a new RJ-45 connector.

4. Before mounting or connecting the balanced audio
sender and receiver wallplates you must first set their
IR/RS-232 control switches (see
Figure 2
, below).
For IR control, set the switches on BOTH wallplate PCBs
to the
IR
position; for RS-232 control set the switches on
BOTH wallplate PCBs in the
RS-232
position.
NOTE: The balanced audio wallplates allow either
IR OR RS-232 control of the iPod. You must choose
one or the other.
5. As shown in
Figure 1
, plug the Cat5 cable(s) you ran
through the walls into the RJ-45 jacks on the rears of
the sender and receiver wallplates. Install the
wallplates into the electrical boxes.
6. As shown in
Figure 1
, connect the balanced audio and
balanced video sender wallplates to the iPort. The
balanced video sender wallplate can be connected via
component video, S-Video or composite video (see
Figure 3,
below).
7. As shown in
Figure 1
, connect the balanced audio and
balanced video receiver wallplates to the audio and
video systems. The balanced video receiver wallplate
must be connected via the same connection type used
on the sender wallplate (see
Figure 3
).
8. Depending on which control mode you selected in
Step 4
, connect the balanced audio sender wallplate to
the iPort and the receiver wallplate to either the IR
control system or the RS-232 control system, as shown
in
Figure 1
.
NOTE: RJ-11 cables for RS-232 connections must be
wired straight-through (Pin 1 to Pin 1).
9. Each set of wallplates (audio and video) requires DC
power. Each includes its own DC power supply.
• If you are installing a single upgrade kit, plug its
power supply into the
Pwr
connector on its receiver
wallplate.
• If you are installing balanced audio and balanced
video receiver wallplates in separate locations, plug
both power supplies included with the two kits to the
Pwr
connectors on both receiver wallplates.
• If you are installing balanced audio and balanced video
receiver wallplates into the same dual-gang electrical box,
you can install a jumper wire (for example, a short length
of 16/2 speaker wire) between their
Aux Power
connectors. This allows all the audio and wideo wallplates
to share a single power supply (see
Figure 4
, below).
Plug the power supply into either receiver wallplate.
10. Once you have confirmed that all the above connections
have been made properly, plug the Wallplate’s and
the iPort’s power supplies into wall outlets.
Fine-Tuning Video Quality After Installation
The balanced video receiver wallplate has two sets of
jumpers and potentiometers that can be used to fine-tune
video quality after the system has been installed and tested.
