Introduction
The GangWay4 is a 4-port “gang roll” router for RS-422 decks. This allows you to
control up to 4 decks or video servers from one 9-pin controller.
The unit has 6 illuminated pushbutton switches to configure and show the port
routing. In addition, 5 pushbuttons can used used to trigger basic transport
commands.
Connections include a 9-pin D-Sub connectors for a controller, four 9-pin D-Sub
connectors for devices such as VTR decks, video servers and switchers and, one
GPI connector. The GPI connector triggers basic 9-pin transport commands to the
selected decks. In addition, the GPI connector also has four outputs that indicates
the status of deck selected for tally.
The unit can be powered from the supplied power adaptor or powered from 9-12
volts DC.

Installation
Unpacking
When you receive your GangWay4, you should receive the following items:
•GangWay4
•This Users Manual
•9 volt DC power supply
•2 Velcro mounting strips
•4 Self Adhesive Rubber Feet

Setup
The GangWay4’s compact half rack design makes it easy to locate wherever you
need it. The GangWay4 must be setup up in a location that does not experience
vibration, excessive humidity, dust or temperature extremes. The GangWay4 can
be mounted in any orientation.
Mounting
The GangWay4 comes with 2 Velcro mounting strips and Self Adhesive Rubber
Feet. If the GangWay4 will be sitting on a desk, affix the 4 Self Adhesive Rubber
Feet to the bottom of the unit. If the GangWay4 needs to be mounted in an
equipment rack, use the 2 Velcro mounting strips to attach the unit to a rack tray
(optional). The GangWay4 does not have mounting holes. Do not use screws or
any other hardware that will protrude into the GangWay4. Doing so will damage
your unit which is not covered under warranty.

Connecting
Connecting the GangWay4
Connecting the GangWay4 is quite straightforward. The GangWay4 typically
connects between a deck controller and up to 4 decks as shown in the following
diagram.
Connect your deck controller into the Controller port on the rear panel. Then,
connect your slave devices to the numbered ports on the rear panel. You can
connect up to 4 slave devices to the GangWay4.

Using the GangWay4
The following section introduces the controls on the GangWay4 and details the
functions of those controls.
Button Modes
The front panel buttons on the GangWay4 have two modes of operation, Routing
Mode and Transport Mode. The mode can be toggled by pressing the unlabelled
Enable button. When the unlabelled Enable button is not illuminated, it is in Routing
Mode. When the unlabelled Enable button is illuminated, it is in Transport Mode.
Enable
The Enable button selects the front panel transport buttons. If the Enable button
is illuminated, the GangWay4 uses the front panel transport buttons. If the
Enable button is extinguished, the GangWay4 uses the rear panel controller port.

Routing Mode
When the unit is powered up, it is in Routing Mode. This is indicated by the
extinguished unlabelled Enable button. In the Routing Mode, the numbered and
Set Tally buttons enable or disable the deck ports for control.
The GangWay4 has 5 illuminated switches on the front panel to set and indicate the
routing configuration of the GangWay4.

These numbered switches allow the user to enable a slave device connected to
the corresponding numbered port on the rear panel. This allows commands
from the controller port to be routed to the selected numbered port(s).
A button illuminates when the port is selected for control and tally.
A button flashes when the port is selected for control only.
A button is extinguished when the port is not selected.
Set Tally
The Set Tally switch allows you to route Tally messages (device status and
responses) back to the controller. Pressing this button allows you to use the
numbered buttons to select the slave device that returns tally messages back to
the controller. Only one slave device at a time can return tally back to the
controller.
The Set Tally button illuminates to indicate that a numbered button can be
pressed to select the Tally function. Only one deck can be selected for Tally.
Transport Mode
When the unlabelled Enable button is pressed, it is in Transport Mode. This is
indicated by the illuminated unlabelled Enable button. In the Transport Mode, the
numbered and Set Tally buttons allow basic transport commands to be sent to the
selected decks.
Rewind, F-Fwd
Pressing these buttons causes the GangWay4 to send the Rewind or Fast
Forward command. These buttons illuminate when the video device reports
back that it is in the Rewind or Fast Forward mode.
Stop
Pressing this button causes the GangWay4 to send the Stop command. This
button illuminates when the video device reports back that it is stopped.
Play
Pressing this button causes the GangWay4 to send the Play command. This
button illuminates when the video device reports back that it is in the Play mode.
Record
Holding this button while pressing the Play button causes the GangWay4 to
send the Crash Record command. This button illuminates when the video
device reports back that it is in the Record mode.

Using with TransportPro
The TransportPro is able to remotely control the GangWay4.
To use the GangWay4 with the TransportPro, simply connect the TransportPro to
the rear panel controller port of the GangWay4 as shown below.

GangWay Controls
When GangWay Operation is enabled in the menu, the Machine Control buttons
and LEDs are repurposed to control the GangWay4 (Ports 1-16 only). In this case,
the functions of the buttons and LEDs are as follows:
Select Channel
Pressing this button enters the GangWay4 configuration mode. In this mode,
the Select Channel LED will illuminate and the VFD will show and the 1 - 4 LEDs
will show the GangWay4 routing.
Tally
Pressing this button allows you to select the port, which provides Tally
information (timecode, status) to the TransportPro. In this mode, the Tally LED
will illuminate and the 1 - 4 LEDs will show the GangWay4 Tally routing.

These numbered switches allow the user to enable a slave device connected to
the corresponding numbered port on the rear panel. This allows commands
from the controller port to be routed to the selected numbered port(s).
When the Set Tally button is not pressed,
#A button illuminates when the port is selected for control.
#A button is extinguished when the port is not selected for control.
Then the Set Tally button is pressed,
#A button illuminates when the port is selected for Tally.
