INSTALLATION
Mount the compass so that it can be clearly seen by the
helmsman. Use double adhesive tape to test the
position before screwing it permanently in place.
The compass should be mounted at least 300 mm from
any tools, large metal objects or other equipment that
can have a magnetic effect on it. The compass can be
mounted horizontally, vertically or on sloping surfaces
using the U-bracket. Fit the bracket at right angles to
the keel.
Securely screw the bracket in place with the non-
magnetic screws provided. If other screws are used,
check that they are not magnetic.
OPERATION
Adjusting the compass
This boat compass is easy to adjust and compensate for
a boat’s magnetic field. There are two knurled
adjustment screws in the compass housing. On delivery
the screws are positioned parallel to the bottom of the
compass housing.
There is no compensation when the compensators are set in this position. You have to adjust the
compensators with your fingers or a coin. Do not use a screwdriver. This can have a negative magnetic
effect on the compass. Start to adjust after you have taken a correct north-south and east-west bearing,
e.g. with the help of known landmarks.
The compass is a magnetic instrument and will therefore only show magnetic bearings. The
compensators are intended to compensate for magnetic effects, e.g. from the metal parts on the boat.
Additional bearing references refer to magnetic bearings.
1. Position the boat facing
north and check that the
compass shows the correct
bearing. If it does not show
a northern bearing, turn the
compensator placed to the
right of the boat’s ahead-
astern line.
2. Position the boat facing
east and check that the
compass shows the correct
bearing. If it does not show
an eastern bearing, turn the
other compensator.
3. Repeat the above procedure if necessary.
4. If it proves impossible to compensate the compass in spite of the above measures, the compass
must be moved to another position where it is not affected by the boat’s magnetism. Maximum
compensation has been achieved if the knurled screws on the compensators are vertical.
