HOW TO TEST THE BLUETOOTH READER IN THE APP
Step 1 - Open the Notary eJournal, and click “Test Fingerprint Reader” from the side menu
(Step 1 (a)). Your app should begin searching for your Bluetooth scanner (Step 1 (b))
Step 2 - Power on your device by pressing and
holding the power button for at least 1.5 seconds.
Once the Bluetooth reader is powered on (may take
up to 5 seconds), the Bluetooth LED will be blinking,
which implies that the device is ready for pairing.
3
Step 1 (a)
Step 2
Press down power button for 1.5 seconds
Step 1 (b)

Note - all pairing between the Notary eJournal and the bluetooth scanner happens
within the app. Do NOT go in to your device’s settings and attempt to pair your
Bluetooth scanner with your device outside of the Notary eJournal app.
Step 3 - When you see the Bluetooth light on the scanner blinking the color blue, you
should see the device pop-up on-screen within the app (Step 3 (a)). Select “connect”.
Once successfully connected, you will see the option to click “Test Fingerprint Capture”
as seen in (Step 3 (b))
Step 4 - Place the fingerprint scanner in front of the person whose fingerprint you are
capturing with the square fingerprint capture panel closest to the person. You should be
able to read the word “SecuGen” at the bottom of the scanner correctly (if the word
“SecuGen” is upside-down to you, the device is facing the wrong way)

Step 5 - Click “Test Fingerprint Capture”. The clear thumbprint panel should start to flash
green. Have the person press their thumb down firmly until the light stops flashing and
turns solid green (this should take roughly 3-5 seconds). The person can then remove
their thumb while the download processes (this should take roughly 10-15 seconds) (Step
5 (a)). Once the download finishes, it will display the finished thumbprint (Step 5 (b)).

Step 5 (a)
Step 5 (b)

Step 2 - Each signer that has been added to this entry
(adding signers happens at step 2) will appear on step 5 with
a name card and the option to add a fingerprint (image 1).
While on this screen, turn on your bluetooth reader (same
instructions as seen above in “How to test the Bluetooth
reader in the app”) then click “add fingerprint” under the
appropriate person’s name
Step 3 - Click “Connect” to connect to the Bluetooth reader
(same instructions as Section 5, Step 3). Then, select which
fingerprint is being captured - default is the right thumb. Then
click “capture fingerprint” (image 2) and have the person press
down on the flashing green light (same instructions as Section
5, Step 5 above).
Step 4 - Verify that the print provided is suicient, and click “Save fingerprint” (image 3).

FINGERPRINT SCANNING TIPS
Place the pad of your finger at the center of the censor - The pad is the fleshy part of the
finger, located in the middle of the first segment. Be sure that the pad (not the tip) covers
as much of the censor window as possible so that the core of your fingerprint can be
scanned. It is okey to place your finger at an angle
Apply light pressure - Apply pressure lightly and evenly during the scanning process.
Use as much pressure needed to hold a pice of paper between your fingers. Pressing too
hard may result in a dark or blurred fingerprint.
Keep your finger still - The LED will light up to scan your fingerprint. Keep your finger in
place while your fingerprint is scanned
How to find the core of your fingerprint - The core of your fingerprint is located between
the middle and lower edge of the first segment of your finger. An easy way to ensure that
the core of your finger is scanned is to place your finger on the ready so that the first joint
of the finger aligns with the bottom edge of the sensor window

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR READER
SecuGen fingerprint readers do not require any special maintenance except for
occasional cleaning of the sensor window if it gets dirty. Normal oil, residue or smudges
on the sensor window should not cause problems or interfere with scanning fingerprints.
The sensor window was designed to withstand heavy use and extreme conditions
including heat and cold. It does not have any coatings that can get damaged because it is
7

made of a hard, quartz-like material that resists scratches, etching, and damage from
environmental elements.
If you wish to clean the surface of the sensor window
•You can safely use a tissue, paper towel or cloth to wipe down the window. To remove
stubborn dirt, you can wipe the window with a cloth dampened with a soap solution.
Squeeze out excess liquid before wiping with the damp cloth.
•Cleaning agents like glass cleaners and anti-bacterial wipes may be used without
harming the sensor. However, as with most plastic material, the housing of the unit
may be damaged if strong solvents, acids or caustic solutions are used.
8

•Do not pour liquids directly onto the sensor or device, as the liquid might seep into the
underlying components and cause damage.

on solid red for 2 seconds, and then the device will automatically power off
Low Battery - When the battery voltage drops below 3.6 V, the battery status LED will
blink red once every second to indicate a low battery level. Connect to a USB charger to
recharge the battery. To protect the battery, it is recommended to charge at lease once
every 6 months.
Charging Status - The charging LED status light will turn solid red while charging or solid
green when the battery is fully charged. The charging status LED will stay on while the
unit is plugged in to a charger, whether or not it is powered on.
