MULTICAL®403isastaticheatmeter,coolingmeterorcombinedheat/coolingmeterbasedontheultrasonicprinciple.
Themeterisintendedforenergymeasurementinalmostalltypesofthermalinstallationswherewaterisusedasthe
energy‐conveyingmedium.
AccordingtoEN1434MULTICAL®403canbedesignateda"hybridinstrument",alsocalledacompactmeter.In
practicethismeansthatflowsensorandcalculatormustnotbeseparated.
Ifflowsensorandcalculatorhavebeenseparatedandthesealsarebroken,themeterisnolongervalidforbilling
purposes,andthefactoryguaranteenolongerapplies.
MULTICAL®403employsultrasonicmeasuringtechnique,ASICandmicroprocessortechnology.Asingle‐board
constructioncomprisesallcalculatingandflowmeasuringcircuits.Thismakesthedesigncompactandrational,and,
inaddition,exceptionallyhighmeasuringaccuracyandreliabilityisobtained.
Volumeismeasuredusingbidirectionalultrasonictechniquebasedonthetransittimemethod,provenalong‐term
stableandaccuratemeasuringprinciple.Throughtwoultrasonictransducersthesoundsignalissentbothwithand
againsttheflow.Theultrasonicsignaltravellingwiththeflowreachestheoppositetransducerfirst.Thetimedifference
betweenthetwosignalscanbeconvertedintoflowvelocityandtherebyalsovolume.
AccuratelymatchedPt500orPt100sensorsmeasureinletandoutlettemperaturesaccordingtoEN60751.
MULTICAL®403normallycomeswithaPt500sensorpair,e.g.shortdirectsensorsaccordingtoEN1434‐2,orø5.8
mmpocketsensors,whichfitKamstrupsensorpocketsinstainlesssteel.
Accumulatedheatenergyand/orcoolingenergycanbedisplayedinkWh,MWhorGJ,allintheformofsevenoreight
significantdigitsplusmeasuringunit.Thedisplayhasbeenspeciallydesignedwithaviewtoobtaininglonglifetime
andsharpcontrastinawidetemperaturerange.
Otherreadingoptionsare:accumulatedwaterconsumption,operatinghourcounter,errorhourcounter,current
temperaturemeasurements,currentflowandpowerreadings.Furthermore,MULTICAL®403canbeconfiguredto
displaymonthlyandyearlyloggings,targetdatedata,max/minflow,max/minpower,informationcode,currentdate
aswellasuser‐definedtariffing.
MULTICAL®403ispoweredbyaninternalD‐celllithiumbatterywithalifespanupto16yearsora2xAlithiumpacket
withalifespanupto9years.Alternatively,themetercanbemainssupplied,eitherby24VACor230VAC.
Inadditiontotheenergymeter’sowndata,MULTICAL®403candisplaytheaccumulatedconsumptionsofuptotwo
extrameters,e.g.anelectricitymeterorcoldandhotwatermeters,whichsupplyapulsesignaltoMULTICAL®403via
reed‐switchorelectronicoutput.Thecontactsignalsfromtheextrametersareconnectedviathecommunication
modules.
Amultipleplugplacedbehindthesealisusedinconnectionwithcalibrationandadjustmentduringverificationaswell
asinconnectionwithcommunicationmodules.MULTICAL®403isavailablewithcommunicationmodulesforWireless
M‐Bus,M‐BusandRS232.Themodulesareavailablewitheitherpulseinputsorpulseoutputs.Seeparagraphs11for
details.
IndesigningMULTICAL®403wehaveattachedgreatimportancetoflexibilitythroughprogrammablefunctionsand
plug‐inmodules(seeparagraphs3.2and11)inordertosecureoptimumuseinawiderangeofapplications.In
addition,theconstructionmakesitpossibletoupdatepreviouslyinstalledMULTICAL®403viathePC‐program
METERTOOLHCW.

engineersanddistributorstoutilizeallfunctionscomprisedinMULTICAL®403.Furthermore,thedescriptionis
