II. INTRODUCTION
The Kaufman KM-25 NON-CONTACT thermometer was developed using the latest infrared technology. This technology allows
a temporal artery (TA) temperature to be taken at a distance of about 5 cm from the forehead.
Accurate, Instant and Non-Contact, the Kaufman KM-25 thermometer is currently the best thermometer for taking
temperatures safely. It has been shown that this method of TA temperature measurement is more accurate than tympanic
thermometry and better tolerated than rectal thermometry (1).
However, as with other types of thermometer it is essential to use the Kaufman KM-25 thermometer correctly to obtain
reliable and stable results.
You are therefore advised to read the instruction manual and safety directions carefully before use.
(1) Greenes D, Fleisher G. Accuracy of a Noninvasive Temporal Artery Thermometer for Use in Infants. Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med 2001;155:376.
III. PRECAUTIONS BEFORE USE
The Kaufman KM-25 thermometer is pre-configured at the factory.
It is not necessary to calibrate the device before use.
To obtain reliable and stable results, following any significant change in the ambient temperature (± 10 ° C) the
thermometer should be left at room temperature for at least 15 minutes before use to allow automatic recalibration of the
device.
It is important to wait 1 minute between temperature measurements.

IV. OPERATING PRINCIPLE
All objects, solid, liquid or gas, radiate energy whose intensity varies in relation to its temperature. The
Kaufman KM-25 thermometer measures the temperature of a person based on the energy that they radiate.
A temperature measurement is taken by the external probe on the device which constantly analyses and
registers the ambient temperature. When the operator holds the thermometer near to the body and
activates the radiation sensor, the temperature is taken instantly by measuring the infrared heat radiated by
the arterial blood flow. The temperature of the person is therefore measured without interference from the
ambient temperature.
DIFFERENT METHODS OF TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT
Core temperature
Measuring core temperature is the most accurate way to measure body temperature, and involves
measuring the temperature of the pulmonary artery by means of a catheter which is fitted with a
temperature sensor to measure the temperature
in situ
. Oesophageal temperature sensors work on the
same principle. However these invasive measurement methods require specialist equipment and skills.
Rectal thermometry
Rectal temperature adjusts slowly in relation to changes in the body’s core temperature. It has been shown
that the rectal temperature remains raised well after the core temperature of the patient has started to fall,
and vice-versa.
In addition to this, rectal perforations have been known to occur when using this method, and without
suitable sterilisation rectal thermometry can propagate contaminants often found in faeces.

Visiomed - Kaufman KM-25 - V.2.3 -201012 6/21
Oral thermometry
Oral temperature is easily affected by recent ingestion of food and drink and by breathing through the
mouth. To take temperature orally, the mouth needs to be closed and the tongue depressed for between
three and four minutes, this is a difficult task for young children.
Axillary thermometry
Axillary temperature is easy to take, but it has been found to be a poor indicator of a child’s body
temperature. To take a temperature measurement in this way the thermometer should be correctly placed
on the axillary artery. Despite its low sensitivity and weakness in detecting fever, axillary temperature is
recommended by the
American Academy of Pediatrics
as a screening test for fever in new-borns.
Tympanic thermometry
To obtain an accurate tympanic temperature it is crucial to use the correct technique. The thermometer
sensor should be placed close to the warmest part of the external auditory canal. Incorrect aim of the
sensor can result in an incorrect temperature reading.
NORMAL TEMPERATURES BY METHOD
MEASUREMENT METHOD NORMAL TEMP°
RECTAL 36.6°C –38°C
ORAL 35.5°C –37.5°C
AXILLARY 34.7°C –37.3°C
TYMPANIC (INNER EAR)35.8°C –38°C
FOREHEAD (THERMOMETER)35.8°C –37.8°C
The normal temperature measured over the temporal area is on average 0,5 °C lower to the temperature
measured rectally.

Visiomed - Kaufman KM-25 - V.2.3 -201012 7/21
ADVANTAGES OF USING TEMPORAL ARTERY (TA) TEMPERATURE
Infrared arterial temperature can be measured using a device placed on the forehead in the temporal artery
region. It has been shown that this relatively new method of measuring temperature is more accurate than
tympanic thermometry and better tolerated than rectal thermometry.
The Kaufman KM-25 thermometer is designed to produce an instant forehead temperature reading without
any contact with the temporal artery. This artery is close to the surface of this skin and therefore accessible
and allows accurate measurement of temperature given a permanent and regular blood flow. The temporal
artery is linked to the heart by the carotid artery which is directly linked to the aorta, and it forms part of
the main trunk of the arterial system. The efficiency, speed and comfort of taking a temperature reading
from this area make it ideal compared with other temperature measurements methods.

PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS WHEN TAKING A TEMPERATURE
-To ensure a precise and accurate temperature measurement, it is important that the user has received
adequate training and information regarding the temperature measurement technique for the device.
-It is important to remember that although the actions required to take the temperature are simple, they
should not be trivialised.
-The temperature should be taken in a neutral context. The patient should not have undertaken vigorous
activity before temperature measurement and the room temperature should be moderate.
-Take note of physiological temperature variations which should be taken into account when reading the
results: temperature increases by 0.5C° between 6am and 3pm. On average women’s temperature is higher
by 0.2C°. Also, women’s temperature varies in relation to their ovarian cycle, it rises by 0.5C° in the second
half of the cycle and in the early stages of pregnancy.
-When sitting, temperature is lower by between 0.3 and 0.4C° than when standing.
HOW TO TAKE A TEMPERATURE
Aim the device at the FOREHEAD, over the temporal area from a
distance of 5 cm, press the thermometer’s measure button and the
temperature will be displayed instantly, the result is also read aloud (in voice
mode).
The temperature can be measured on other parts of the body but
the accuracy cannot be guaranteed.

FOR RELIABLE RESULTS
Before taking a temperature reading and to ensure a stable and reliable result:
-Push aside hair from the forehead
-Wipe away any perspiration on the forehead
-Avoid drafts (e.g. nasal cannula, air conditioning etc.)
-Wait 1 minute between temperature readings
--Following any significant change in the ambient temperature (± 10°C) the thermometer should be left at
room temperature for at least 15 minutes before use to allow automatic recalibration of the device.
V. USING YOUR THERMOMETER
1. Install the batteries.
2. Before first use or when inserting new batteries, wait 10 minutes for the
device to warm up.
3. Aim towards the forehead (see the following diagram for how to position the
thermometer) from a distance of 5 cm, press the thermometer’s measure button
and the temperature will be displayed instantly (see layout of the LCD screen
below). Temperature can also be taken behind the ear lobe –on the jugular vein.
4. Before taking a temperature reading, take care to move hair and wipe
perspiration from the forehead.
