Functional description
The DNX R-2F/FC are network nodes that support intelligent infrastructure monitoring
of the hybrid and Optic Fibre network bus with RS-485 / ARCNET CIE interface ports
A1 and A2.
Figure 2: Design Structure Diagram
The DNX R-2F/FC can function in one of two modes:
1) Mode 1 as a PASSIVE dual port Optic Fibre / RS-485 medium converter.
2) Mode 2 as an ACTIVE network node in either a class A or class B monitored
network. (ACTIVE mode is required for use as a network analysis tool)
The mode can be selected through Set 6, switch 4 in Figure 6 and Table 10.
Note* The DNX R-2F/FC will operate in a basic mode unless upgraded to unlock
the additional features offered by the firmware upgrade (DNX R-2F/FC-UG).
Refer to Table 9a for the features included in the DNX R-2F/FC and DNX R-2F/FC-
UG products.
The DNX R-2F/FC may be purchased and later upgraded with the
DNX R-2F/FC-UG functionality by purchasing a license key that allows the IVIEW
application tool to unlock the additional functionality. The DNX R-2F/FC will
operate in BOTH PASSIVE and ACTIVE Modes, with the DNX R-2F/FC-UG
increasing the features set.
6
Man-1492
DNX-R-2F/FC-K

The additional features offered with the DNX R-2F/FC-UG license are accessed by
using the IVIEW application. The license indication LED I/O 3 on the keypad is used to
indicate a licensed/unlicensed state, as in Figure 20.
The DNX R-2F/FC can operate in a mode with two optic fibre interfaces (2F) located on
ports B and C and also in a mode with a single optic fibre interface and an RS-485
interface (FC or CF).
In hybrid mode (FC /CF) the optic fibre interface on the DNX R-2F/FC can be
configured as either port B or C by selecting the correct rotary switch setting as per
Table 11. When used to support an optic fibre link in a class A bus configuration, one
of the
DNX R-2FC modules would require a port swap to support the standard port B to C
connection format around the closed ring. An example of this is illustrated in Figure 3.
Figure 3: Class A –Hybrid Redundant Network
7
Man-1492
DNX-R-2F/FC-K

When using as a 2F module, the two Optic Fibre ports (B & C) are connected as per
Figure 18a.
Depending on the driver module selected, the Optic Fibre, transceiver modules can
support transmission distances up to 80 km. The CIE connection to port A1 and/or A2
is via an RS-485 or ARCNET interface. The connection to ports A1, A2, B and C are as
indicated in Figures 18a and 18b, depending on the mode of operation.
The different operational configurations are presented in figures 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d.

Figure 4e: DNX R-2F/FC Port A1 and A2 Connections
The module supports 2-wire half duplex communication from CIE nodes
(RS-485 / ARCNET). With the DNX R-2F/FC-UGupgrade, the module dynamically
manages and protects the data bus through monitoring the data it routes. The
modules are transparent to the CIE protocols, only routing and analysing the data
structure but not the content. The maximum standard transmission rate supported on
the CIE ports (A1 and A2) is 115.2 kbit/s for RS-485 and 312 kbits/s for ARCNET.
(Higher transmission rates are possible with OEM support).

SFP signing
All of the supplied SFP transceivers are signed to mark calibration with the
DNX R-2F/FC product and any non-signed transceivers must NOT be used with the
DNX R-2F/FC.
Any use of SFP transceivers with the product will void the warranty on the
product as it will affect the operation of the product.
If the SFP transceiver is NOT signed, the IO PORT 1 and 2 LED will flash in sync to
indicate an unsigned transceiver in PORT B and IO PORT 3 and 4 LEDs will flash in
sync for an unsigned SFP transceiver in PORT C.

DIP-switch settings
Before accessing the internal DIP-switch and jumper settings: (sets 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5)
Prevent damage to internal electronics from electrostatic discharges (ESD) by
discharging your body to a grounding point (e.g. use of a wrist strap). For internal DIP
SWITCH setting information, refer to the DNX R-2F/FC Advanced User Manual.
The configuration setting for use with Kentec fire alarm panels has been simplified so
that you only need to set Rotary switch (Rot SW 1) and DIP Switch Set 6, (refer to
Figure 6) both of which are externally accessible. You should therefore not need to
open the product enclosure. The settings as presented in Tables 10 and 11.
After changing any DIP switch setting, it is essential that the power be turned
OFF and ON again for the setting changes to be recognized.
Figure 6: DIP-switches and Rotary switch
Switch settings for DNX R-2F/FC operation
The switch settings should only be altered by a competent user, who understands the
implications of changing each switch. Altering the switches could compromise the
functioning of the device if set incorrectly.

Unit specific description
The DNX R-2F/FC module is designed to enhance the performance of the network by
monitoring and optimizing the performance of the physical transmission layer. Each of
the inter-node links (links between the DNX R-2F/FC nodes) are managed
independently from each other. This allows for each link to have different
characteristics. The performance of each link is monitored to track and record its
associated Quality of Service (QoS).
The cable performance for the data rate of transmitted signal will vary according to the
type and length of cable used. Although each link in the transmission path will be
optimized for performance, the maximum data rate will be limited to the poorest
performing link in the network. Figure 8 illustrates the independent links in a typical
class A DNX R-2F/FC application.
