A WARM
WELCOME
CONGRATULATIONS!
Your home is fitted with a unique renewable heating technology, allowing you to benefit
from lower running costs and a more even temperature throughout your home.
An air source heat pump collects and utilises thermal energy from the outside air to
heat the home and provide domestic hot
water. It does this in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. It can
extract heat from the air even when the outside temperature is as low as -20°C.
The heat generated can be used to warm water for radiators, underfloor heating
systems or provide domestic hot water in your home.
The process is simple, effective and entirely renewable and has been developed
specifically for use in the UK and Irish domestic housing markets.
In this guide we’ll explain how Aeromax generates heat for your home and how to use
your system in the most efficient way.

YOUR AEROMAX PLUS
AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP
Your Aeromax Plus air source heat pump is designed to heat your home and to
provide domestic hot water (DHW). Normally your installer will have ensured that
your heat pump has sufficient heating output to provide these services without any
supplementary heating being required.
You’ll find your Aeromax Plus unit close to a wall outside your property. It can also
be mounted off the ground.

AEROMAX PLUS
HEAT PUMP

Aeromax Plus Air Source Heat Pumps provide thermodynamic heating by
means of a vapour compression cycle. In the same way that a fridge uses
refrigerant to extract heat from the inside to keep the food cool, air source heat
pump extracts heat from the outside air, and uses it to heat the home through
radiators, underfloor system or provide domestic hot water. It can extract heat
from the air even when the outside temperature is as low as -20°C.
Although Aeromax Plus is powered by electricity, when it is installed and designed
correctly can often result in the system costing less to run than systems heated
by oil, LPG, electricity or coal. Your heating costs will depend on how you use
your heating or hot water and the temperature of your radiators. Aeromax Plus is
cost-effective to use all year round, but you can ensure it is at its most efficient by
running your radiators or underfloor heating at lower temperatures.
1. EVAPORATOR
The evaporator collects heat from
the outside air, which is then drawn
into the unit by the fan through the
evaporator fins and expelled through
the front grille. The evaporator has
liquid refrigerant passing through
it, which is at a considerably lower
temperature than the outside air,
therefore the air gives up its heat to
the refrigerant, which then vaporises.
2. EOMPRESSOR
This preheated vapour now travels to
the compressor where it is compressed
and upgraded to a much higher
temperature.
3. CONDENSER (heat exchanger)
The hot vapour now enters the
condenser where it is surrounded by
water from the heating system. The
heat is given up to the cooler water
and the now cooler refrigerant returns
to its former liquid state but still under
high pressure from the compressor.
4. EXPANSION DEVICE
This high pressure is then released
by passing the liquid through the
expansion device and from there it
returns to the evaporator and the cycle
starts again.

HOW DOES
IT WORK?
AEROMAX PLUS AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP PACKAGE
KINGSPAN HEAT PUMPS

The Aeromax Plus heat pump is designed to operate with a standard heating
time switch and programmable room thermostat, providing space heating or
DHW according to demand. The unit has two modes of operation: one for space
heating through underfloor heating or radiators adjustable between 35°C and
55°C and a second for DHW preset at 60°C.
We recommend that you review the electricity tariffs from all suppliers in your
area and select one that will give you the optimum economy in relation to your
lifestyle and heating demand
Your heating system is controlled by a programmable room thermostat that allows you to
choose when to have your heating on and what temperature it should be when it is on. A
time switch allows you to choose when you want to make hot water. The programmable room
thermostat controls the temperature of the main living area while thermostatic radiator
valves control the temperatures of the radiators in other rooms.
The Aeromax Plus radiator system works at a lower surface temperature than traditional
central heating. This means that your radiators will take a little longer to warm up your home
but will give you a more even comfortable temperature.
Normally your installer will have ensured that your radiators are correctly sized for operation
with a heat pump.
Your heat pump supplies Domestic Hot Water at between 50ºC - 55ºC. This is stored in the
special hot water cylinder provided with your heat pump to ensure that you always have hot
water on tap.
Kingspan recommend that the hot water cylinder thermostat is set between 55/60 degrees C.
The cylinder immersion heater should be set at 60ºC - 65ºC.

SETTING YOUR HEATING
The programmable room thermostat lets you choose what times you want the
heating to be on, and what temperature it should reach while it is on. This will allow
you to select different temperatures in your home at different times of the day (and
days of the week) to meet your particular needs.
SETTING YOUR HOT WATER
The hot water and radiator systems cannot run at the same time so we
recommend that you set your hot water to come on 45-50 min. before you need
it. The hot water timings given in the tables below allow for the immersion heater
to beactivated after the hot water cycle in the morning. This will sanitise the tank
temperature to between 60-65ºC.
Typical winter settings for the programmable room thermostat and hot water time
switch are illustrated below.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING & THERMOSTATIC
RADIATOR VALVES (TRV’S)
Some of your radiators have thermostatic valves which allow you to vary the
temperature in different areas of your home. You may, for example, prefer to keep
your bedrooms cooler than your living room. Underfloor heating on the ground floor
is normally controlled by room thermostats. This allows you to have different room
temperatures if preferred.
AUTOMATIC DEFROST
When moist air comes into contact with the Aeromax Plus’s evaporator, it will ice up in
much the same way as ice builds up in your refrigerator. Defrosting the evaporator is a
normal part of the Aeromax Plus operation in colder weather and normally takes place
for about 4 minutes per hour. When defrosting, the fan will stop and water vapour may
be seen rising from the heat exchanger. This is normal and is not a cause for concern.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Do not stand on the heat pump for any reason.
2. Do not allow children to poke sticks or other objects through the front grille into
the fan as this
3. Outer panels should only be removed by a qualified service engineer.
SERVICING
We recommend that an annual service of the Aeromax Plus air source heat pump is
carried out, should you require further details on service packages please contact us.
You are advised to check occasionally that there is no debris around the heat pump
which may get drawn into, or obstruct, the fans or the evaporator coils of the unit.

1. MY HEAT PUMP IS RUNNING BUT THE RADIATORS ARE ONLY LUKE WARM. WHY?
Heat pumps can only supply maximum temperatures of 55 - 60°C to the heating system.
This is much lower than the 70 - 80°C supplied by a fossil fuel boiler. Therefore, the
radiators will feel cooler. Also, the heat pump is usually programmed with a climatic
curve that reduces the output temperature as the outside air becomes warmer. This
reduces energy consumption but will also result in radiators only feeling luke warm if it is
warm outside.
2. I HAVE UNDERFLOOR HEATING. WHY DOES IT TAKE SO LONG TO WARM UP?
Underfloor heating is ideal for heat pumps as it works at lower temperatures than
radiators and this improves the efficiency of the heat pump. However, it is important
to understand the differences between underfloor heating and radiators. Underfloor
heating is a ‘radiant’ heating system. It works by heating up a large mass of concrete
under the floor and this then ‘radiates’ heat to the room above. Heating a large mass of
concrete can take a long time but when it is warm it can supply heat for several hours
and only needs topped up. Therefore, underfloor heating should not be turned off for
long periods.
3. THE FANS ARE RUNNING ON MY HEAT PUMP BUT STEAM OR SMOKE SEEMS TO
BE COMING OUT. WHY?
When the heat pump is running it draws in air over the evaporator coils and removes
energy from this air. This means that the exhaust air blown out by the fans is colder than
the surrounding air. When this cold dry air comes into contact with relatively warmer
moist air then depending on the air temperature condensation may be formed. This
condensation will give the appearance of smoke or steam coming out from the fans.
4. THE FANS ARE NOT RUNNING BUT MY HEAT PUMP IS ON AND A LOT OF WATER
AND STEAM IS COMING OUT. WHY?
When the heat pump is defrosting it has to heat up the evaporator coils to melt the ice
formed on them. To perform the defrosting quickly the evaporator coils are heated to a
high temperature. This can result in some of the melt water being turned to steam. As
the ice melts quickly it will appear that a lot of water is running out.

The error code can be identified from the
flashing LED on the Diagnostic Indicator using
the following table. In the case of more than
one error, the error with the highest priority
will be displayed until it is resolved. In the
case of an error the LED flashes a numbers
times equal to the error code at a frequency
of 1Hz and then remains off again for 6
seconds. If the error code has 2 digits, the
flashing is interrupted for 2 seconds between
the first and second digits.
EXAMPLE: error 23: 2 flashes of 1 second
each. Off for 2 seconds. 3 flashes of 1 second
each. Off for 6 seconds. The cycle repeats
until the LED turns off because the problem
is resolved or if an error with higher priority
occurs.
To reset the unit after an error has been
cleared turn off the mains supply for 10
seconds and turn on again.

place. The green lights shows that the power
is on to the heat pump. The red alarm light
will flash in the event of a problem. If this
occurs count the number of flashes between
pauses and use the fault code table to
determine the fault.
