Thank you for choosing a KLARO product!
These operating instructions are part of the technical documentation for the small
sewage treatment plant. It is part of the product and must be passed on if the owner or
location changes. These instructions contain important information on safety,
technical data, structure and functional principle, installation and initial start-up,
maintenance and faults.
Read the operating instructions carefully before use. It is an important prerequisite for
the correct use of the KLARO UV modules.
All persons who come into direct contact with the system must have read and
understood the content of this documentation. We recommend keeping this part close
to the small sewage treatment plant.
We hope you enjoy your new KLARO product.

Interesting information
The operator is responsible for the proper installation and operation of the products.
He is also responsible for ensuring that, in addition to the safety instructions and
instructions in this manual, the legal regulations, standards, ordinances and
regulations applicable to the area of application of the system are observed. This
includes in particular the relevant safety, accident prevention and environmental
protection regulations as well as the specifications for inspection and maintenance
applicable at the place of use.
Operation in accordance with the operation and maintenance instructions in this
manual is mandatory to comply with government cleaning requirements.
To ensure the operational safety of the system, the operator must:
• Have the prescribed regular maintenance work carried out by a specialist
• If the control or electrical lines are damaged, shut down the system
immediately and disconnect it from the power supply.
• Eliminate operating errors or damage immediately or arrange for repairs to be
carried out by a specialist
• All safety markings on the system must always be kept in a legible condition.
The operator must ensure that the personnel for installation, assembly, inspection and
maintenance have the necessary qualifications or expertise for this work and that
people who handle the product have been sufficiently instructed. In addition, there
may be legal regulations regarding the required qualifications.
The products must not be operated under the influence of alcohol, drugs or
medication that impair the ability to perceive and react.
Servicing and maintenance work on the system may only be carried out by competent
persons. Experts are people who have the necessary qualifications for the operation
and maintenance of small sewage treatment plants due to their professional training
and participation in relevant qualification measures. Work on the electrical system and
the connection to the power supply may only be carried out by qualified electricians.

The KLARO UV module is used to disinfect biologically treated wastewater. It can only
be operated in combination with a KLARO or KLARO Easy small wastewater treatment
plant. The disinfection is accomplished by ultraviolet light (UV) which is an effective,
efficient and particularly environmentally friendly method. UV light kills pathogenic
microorganisms within seconds without leaving any residues, harmful by-products or
disturbing odours. The effect of the UV light is used by applying particularly effective
UVC radiation (254 nm). Within seconds, it produces a photochemical reaction in the
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) essential for all microorganisms. This either kills the
microorganism or destroys its ability to multiply.
The reduction rate depends on the minimum UV radiation (UV dose), i.e. the time for
which a microorganism is exposed to a certain UV irradiance (W/m²). At a UV dose of
400 J/m², the required reduction of the most important human pathogenic bacteria,
parasites and viruses is achieved by 4 powers of ten. The disinfection capacity of a UV
system is mainly based on each volume element receiving the necessary UV dose
when flowing through the UV reactor. In order to ensure this, the UV plant’s irradiation
field and hydraulic system are optimally adjusted to each other.
At the UV dose levels used for disinfection, the UV radiation does not cause any
undesirable side reactions. As no disinfectant is added to the water by UV radiation,
there are no depot effects after passing of the UV reactor.

The connecting cable leading from the UV module to the control cabinet must not be
longer than 20 m for S50 and 5 m for S80. Greater cable lengths must be coordinated
in consultation with the manufacturer.
The reactor must be earthed. For this purpose, the green/yellow earthing cable is
guided from the reactor via the ballast and connecting cable to the control cabinet.
