3 Prod ct Description
1. Product Description
The Charge Plate Monitor CPM 374 with its b ilt-in timer f nction consists of a high voltage nit
and an electrostatic field meter. Therefore it has an inp t resistance of 10
16
Ω and is s ited for
meas ring static potentials and discharging times of air ionizers.
The CPM 374 corresponds to DIN EN 61340-5-1 and EOS/ESD S.3.1.
For meas ring vertically the enclosed distance bolts have to be sed.
Important: The high voltage nit is protected by high impedance and therefore to ch-proof.
By the se of battery power and its compact design the CPM 374 is perfectly s ited for mobile
application. Of co rse it can be operated by sing the provided wall power s pply. As the CPM
374 is men -driven and operated by 2 p shb ttons the device is very ser-friendly. For a better
orientation the selected parameters are displayed in the do ble-spaced LCD display.
The device can be operated comp ter-controlled by se of the provided Excel software.

5 Initial Operation
2. Initial Operation
With its integrated NiMH storage battery the CPM 374 is pl g-and-play. After switching on the
software version is displayed briefly.
Please se only the provided power s pply. In battery operation mode the backlight is powered
off to save power. F rthermore the device has a tomatic power sh t-off after 10min of inactivi-
ty.
3. Mode Selection
The CPM 374 can be driven as charge plate monitor, voltmeter or electrostatic field meter. By
pressing b tton « » the modes can be switched.
4. Charge Plate Mode
4.1. Decay ime and Offset Voltage
The display shows the selected type of meas rement and prompts to start, e.g.:
The last mode is stored in the EEPROM and displayed after t rning on.
By selecting Decay Time = AUTO the decay time for the positive and the negative voltage is de-
termined a tomatically . AUTO is recommended beca se the Start b tton has to be pressed only
once to perform a meas rement, incl ding the determination of the offset voltage.
The offset voltage is the plate’s potential after a certain time that defines the eq ilibri m of
positive and negative ions. If the offset voltage is positive, the air ionizer has a excess of positive
ions – in case of negative offset voltage the air ionizer excesses negative ions.
Please consider the man fact rer’s instr ctions for a q alitative analysis.
After pressing the b tton «A», the plate electrode is charged by the integrated high voltage nit.
The display shows the timer parameters and the applied voltage, e.g.:
TIMER: 1000-100V
U > 1200V
DECAY TIME: AUTO
PRESS START !

6 Man al CPM 374
The timer starts by passing the pper threshold (1000V in the example)
and determines the decay time by reaching the lower threshold (100V in the example). The pa-
rameters for the timer can be selected in the Setup.
Important: Decay times
≤
≤≤
≤
0,1s are displayed as <0,1s
After the determination of the decay time (s), the offset voltage is meas red after a defined time
period.
The meas rement is finished after determining the offset voltage. All data req ired, e.g. to q ali-
fy an air ionizer, can be read off the display. The offset voltage UOFF and the associated time slice
are displayed in the pper line, the decay time is displayed in the bottom line as POS.DECAY or
NEG.DECAY or ii AUTO - Mode alternating every second:
The display remains ntil b tton «A» Continue is pressed.
OFF = XXXV T = XXXs
POS.DECAY = XX.Xs
OFFSET = XXXs
U = XXXXV
TIMER = XX.Xs
U = XXXXV

4.2. Saving Data
It is possible to save the meas red data in the internal memory. After every meas rement the
device prompts :
By pressing b tton « » the c rrent data are discarded and the next meas rement can be per-
formed.
By pressing b tton «A» the saving is initiated. In event of free space section 4.2.1 is displayed. In
the case of f ll memory (99 entries) the device anno nces for 2s:
To save the data nevertheless the memory has to be erased. Therefore the following prompt is
displayed:
Skip the deleting process by pressing b tton « » and contin e to the next meas rement. The
last res lt disappears from the display and cannot be saved.
Important: It is strongly recommended to copy all data with the provided software to a pc. In
this case the memory can be erased witho t losing precio s data.
After erasing the whole memory by pressing b tton «A», the device proposes the storage space

If the s pply voltage of the NiMH battery falls below 6.7 Volt, the device ret rns in the pper
line:
The battery has to be charged, altho gh the c rrent meas rement can be completed.
Important: Please se only the provided power s pply to charge the battery. Charging also
takes place while the device is switched off. The maxim m charge time for the switched off de-
vice is abo t 14 ho rs.
If the s pply voltage falls below 6.4 Volt, the display shows
before the device powers off a tomatically to prevent total discharge of the battery. Total dis-
charge can lead to damage or breakdown of the battery!
8. Warranty
In case of proper operation according to the man al we iss e a g arantee of 24 months. Mechan-
ical damage and battery destr ction by wrong handling are excepted.
Guarantee expires on opening the device!
9. Grounding
To provide acc rate evidence of the polarity and magnit de of the field meas red, the device has
to be gro nded properly. To this end connect the instr ment at the gro nding jack with gro nd.
10. Warning Notices
•The instr ments are not accredited for meas rements in explosion-proof areas. Mea-
s rements in power plants are not permitted!
•Alternating fields f > 1 Hz cannot be meas red
•Spark discharge on the mod lator system m st be avoided
•Do not connect the switched off device to the mains adapter for longer periods (max.

15 Maintenance and Calibration
1)
11. Maintenance and Calibration
The PTFE spacers need to be kept clean (free of grease), therefore sho ld not be to ched by
hand. If the voltage decrease nder normal s rro nding conditions witho t ion so rce is larger
than 100V/min, the spacers have to be cleaned with acetone or comparable.
The recommended calibration interval is 1 year
12. Important Information
D ring air ionization meas rements please note :
As the plate electrode is ins lated it has to be protected from electrostatic ind ction. Electrostat-
ic ind ction can be effected by a person passing by or by moving a charged object close to the
instr ment. External static fields ca sed by high charges in the instr ments s rro nding have to
be avoided.
