Receipt,unpackingandstorage
Uponacceptingshipmentoftheequipment,theshipyardand/orthedealermustensure
thatthedeliveryiscompleteandinspecteachshippingcontainerforevidenceofphysical
damage.
Iftheinspectionrevealsanyindicationofcrushing,dropping,immersioninwateror
anyotherformofdamage,therecipientshouldrequestthatarepresentativefromthe
companyusedtotransporttheequipmentbepresentduringunpacking.
Allequipmentmustbeinspectedforphysicaldamage,i.e.brokencontrolsandindicators,
dents,scratchesetc.duringunpacking.Ifanydamagetotheequipmentisdiscovered,the
recipientmustnotifyboththetransportationcompanyandKongsbergMaritimesothat
KongsbergMaritimecanarrangeforreplacementorrepairofthedamagedequipment.

Onceunpacked,theequipmentmustbestoredinacontrolledenvironmentwithan
atmospherefreeofcorrosiveagents,excessivehumidityortemperatureextremes.

AboutElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)
Electrostaticdischarge(ESD)isthesuddenowofelectricitybetweentwoelectrically
chargedobjects.Suchowcanbecausedbycontact,anelectricalshort,ordielectric
breakdown.Electrostaticdischarge(ESD)cancauseseriousdamagetoprintedcircuit
boardsandelectronicmodules.

Note
Whenyouhandleelectroniccircuitboardsandmodules,youmustbewareofthedangers
ofelectrostaticdischarge(ESD),bothtoyourselfandtotheequipment.Inorderto
ensuresafetransportandstorage,circuitboardsandotherelectronicunitswillalways
bewrappedinaclearplasticprotectivebag,andthebagwillbesealed.
Forcorrectandsafehandlingofprintedcircuitboardsandelectronicmodules,youneed
asuitableworkingarea.Theworkingareamustbecoveredbyanapprovedconductive
servicematthathasaresistanceofbetween50kΩand2MΩ,andisconnecteddirectly
toareliableearthpointviaitsearthingcord.You-andallotherservicepersonnel
involved-mustwearawristbandindirectcontactwiththeskin.Thewristbandmustbe
electricallyconnectedtotheservicemat..
WhatisElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)?
ElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)isthetransferofanelectrostaticchargebetweentwo
bodiesatdifferentelectrostaticlevels,causedeitherbydirectcontactorinductionby
anelectrostaticeld.Thepassingofachargethroughanelectronicdevicecancause
localoverheating,anditcanalso"puncture"insulatinglayerswithinthestructureofthe
device.Thismaydepositaconductiveresidueofthevaporizedmetalonthedevice,
andthuscreateashortcircuit.ElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)mayresultinafailures
ordegradedperformanceofthedevice.
ESDcancreatespectacularelectricsparks(thunderandlightningisalarge-scale
ESDevent),butalsolessdramaticformswhichmaybeneitherseennorheard,
yetstillbelargeenoughtocausedamagetosensitiveelectronicdevices.Electric
sparksrequireaeldstrengthaboveapproximately4kV/cminair,asnotably
occursinlightningstrikes.OtherformsofESDincludecoronadischargefrom
sharpelectrodesandbrushdischargefrombluntelectrodes.
ESDcancausearangeofharmfuleffectsofimportanceinindustry,includinggas,
fuelvapourandcoaldustexplosions,aswellasfailureofsolidstateelectronics
componentssuchasintegratedcircuits.Thesecansufferpermanentdamage
whensubjectedtohighvoltages.Electronicsmanufacturersthereforeestablish
electrostaticprotectiveareasfreeofstatic,usingmeasurestopreventcharging,
suchasavoidinghighlychargingmaterialsandmeasurestoremovestaticsuchas
groundinghumanworkers,providingantistaticdevices,andcontrollinghumidity.

PrecautionstopreventElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)
Sensitiveprintedcircuitboardsandelectronicmodulesmustalwaysbetransported
andstoredinprotectiveantistaticpackingbags.Itasalsoimportantthattheyarenot
transportedorstoredclosetostrongelectrostatic,electromagneticorradioactiveelds.If
itisnecessarytoopenandtouchtheprintedcircuitboardormoduleinsidetheprotective
bag,thefollowingprecautionsmustbetaken.
1Forcorrectandsafehandlingofprintedcircuitboardsandelectronicmodules,you
needasuitableworkingarea.Theworkingareamustbecoveredbyanapproved
conductiveservicematthathasaresistanceofbetween50kΩand2MΩ,andis
connecteddirectlytoareliableearthpointviaitsearthingcord.
2You-andallotherservicepersonnelinvolved-mustwearawristbandindirect
contactwiththeskin.Thewristbandmustbeelectricallyconnectedtotheservice
mat.
3Printedcircuitboardsandelectronicmodulesmustbeplacedontheconductive
servicematduringinstallationandmaintenanceoperations.
4If,foranyreason,itisnecessarytomovethecircuitboardfromtheconductive
servicemat,itmustbeplacedinanapprovedantistatictransportationcontainer(for
exampleastaticshieldingbag)beforetransportation.
5Duringinstallationandservicing,allelectricalequipment(forexamplesoldering
ironsandtestequipment)mustbeearthed.

considerations
Takethisinformationintoconsiderationwhendeployingthetransponders.
Acousticrange
Thedepthratingshouldnotbeconfusedwithacousticrange.Theacousticrangeis
dependentonmanyfactors,andsomeofthefactorsareoutsidecontroloftheuser.
Vesselsystem
Thedirectivityandcoverageareaforthevesselsystemisdifferent,dependingonwhich
systemyouareusing.Somesystemshavehighdirectivityandomnidirectionalcoverage,
whileothersystemshasreducedcoverageandlessdirectivity.Thetranspondershould
alwaysbewithinthecoverageconeofthevesselsystem.
Transducertype
Therearedifferenttypesoftransducersusedonthetransponders.Anomnidirectional
transducer,suchasTD180,coversalargearea,buthaslessacousticpowercomparedto
afocusedtransducer,suchasTD30V .Afocusedsignalgiveslessfootprint/coverage.
Thevesselshouldalwaysbewithinthesignalfootprintofthetransponder.
TXPower
Theabilitytodetectsignalsdependsonthesignalstrength.Thetransmissionpowercan
beadjusted,bothforthevesselsystemandforthetransponder.
Acousticnoise
Acousticnoiseispresentatallvessels.Atgivenconditions,thenoiselevelcanbe
excessive.Acousticnoiseiscausedbymainpropellersandthrusters,andinsome
instancesalsofrommachinery/pumpsonboard.Heavypropeller/thrusteruseoralso
wavescanalsogenerateairbubbles,whichcangetinfrontofthevesseltransducerand
blocktheacousticsignal.
